In this study, the 'force density method' for shape finding of cable net structures is presented. This concept is based on the force-length ratios or force densities which are defined for each branch of the net structures. This method renders a simple linear 'analytical form finding' possible. If the free choice of the force densities is restricted by further condition, the linear method is extended to a nonlinear one. The nonlinear one can be applied to the detailed computation of networks. In this paper, the general inverse matrix is introduced to solve the nonlinear equilibrium equation including Jacobian matrix which is rectangular matrix. Several examples for linear and nonlinear analysis applied additional constraints are presented. It is shown that the force density method is suitable for form finding of cable net and the general inverse matrix can be applied to solve the nonlinear equation without Lagrangian factors.

To study the seismic damage of masonry structures and understand the characteristics of the multi-intensity region, according to the Dujiang weir urbanization of China Wenchuan earthquake, the deterioration of 3991 masonry structures was summarized and statistically analysed. First, the seismic damage of multistory masonry structures in this area was investigated. The primary seismic damage of components was as follows: Damage of walls, openings, joints of longitudinal and transverse walls, windows (lower) walls, and tie columns. Many masonry structures with seismic designs were basically intact. Second, according to the main factors of construction, seismic intensity code levels survey, and influence on the seismic capacity, a vulnerability matrix calculation model was proposed to establish a vulnerability prediction matrix, and a comparative analysis was made based on the empirical seismic damage investigation matrix. The vulnerability prediction matrix was established using the proposed vulnerability matrix calculation model. The fitting relationship between the vulnerability prediction matrix and the actual seismic damage investigation matrix was compared and analysed. The relationship curves of the mean damage index for macrointensity and ground motion parameters were drawn through calculation and analysis, respectively. The numerical analysis was performed based on actual ground motion observation records, and fitting models of PGA, PGV, and MSDI were proposed.

Shell structures are widely used in a variety of engineering application, and mathematical solution of shell structures are available only for a few special cases. The solution of shell structure is more complicated when it has such condition as winkler foundation, other problems. In this study many simplified methods (analogy of beam on elastic foudation, finite element method and transfer matrix method) are applied to analyze a hemisphere-cylindrical shell structures on elastic foundation. And the transfer matrix method is extensively used for the structural analysis because of its merit in the theoretical backgroud and applicability. Therefore, this paper presents the analysis of hemisphere-cylindrical shell structure base on the transfer matrix method. The technique is attractive for implementation on a numerical solution by means of a computer program coded in FORTRAN language with a few elements. To demonstrate this fact, it gives good results which compare well with finite element method.
This paper presents a method for detecting damage in irregular 2D and 3D continuum structures based on combination of wavelet transform (WT) with fuzzy inference system (FIS) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). Many damage detection methods study regular structures. This method studies irregular structures and doesn't need response of healthy structures. First the damaged structure is analyzed with finite element methods, and damage response is obtained at the finite element points that have irregular distance, secondly the FIS, which is optimized by PSO is used to obtain responses at points, having equal distance by response at those points that previously obtained by the finite element methods. Then a 2D (for 2D continuum structures) or a 3D (for 3D continuum structures) matrix is performed by equal distance point response. Thirdly, by applying 2D or 3D wavelet transform on 2D or 3D matrix that previously obtained by FIS detail matrix coefficient of WT is obtained. It is shown that detail matrix coefficient can determine the damage zone of the structure by perturbation in the damaged area. In order to illustrate the capability of proposed method some examples are considered.

Generally, a structural system with large inextensional deformations, or in other words, non-strained deformation is called as 'Unstable Structure', Truss-linked structures, cable structures, membrane structures and movable structures as foldable space structures etc, are included in this category. In this paper, a dynamic analysis method for unstable structural systems is presented. Governing equations for dynamic analysis of unstable truss structures with inextensional displacements are derived. Because of singularity of inverse matrixin in practical analysis of unstable structure, the generalized inverse matrix is Introduced to resolve the singular problem. Also, the RREF technique is used to get the inextensional displacement mode. Two unstable truss structures are analyzed by using presented method. Damping is not considered. From the given results, it is known that proposed method is useful to figure out the dynamic behavior of unstable truss structures.

In this paper, a singularity problem of the state transition matrix is investigated in the spatial propagation when the spatial matrix differential equation is constructed via time finite element analysis. A parametric study shows that the degree of singularity of the state transition matrix depends on the degree of flexibility of the structures. As an alternative to avoid the numerical problems due to the singularity, an analytic solution fur spatial propagation of the flexible structures is proposed. In the proposed method, the spatial properties of the structure are analytically expressed by a combination of transcendental functions. The analytic solution serves fast and accurate results by eliminating the possibility of the error accumulation caused by the boundary condition. Several numerical examples are shown to validate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.
In this paper the Modified Finite Element-Transfer Matrix Method, which is the combination of Transfer Matrix Method and Finite Element Method, is applied to the static analysis of the structures. In the method, the structure is divided into substructures thus the number of unknowns that need to be worked out is reduced due to the transformation process. The static analysis of the structures can be performed easily and speedily by the proposed method. At the end of the study examples are presented for ensuring the agreement between the proposed method and classic Finite Element Method.
A combination of Riccati transfer matrix method and finite element method is proposed for obtaining vibration frequencies of structures. This method reduces the propagation of round-off errors produced in the standard transfer matrix method and finds out the values of the frequency by Newton-Raphson method. By this technique, the number of nodes required in the regular finite element method is reduced and therefore a microcomputer may be used. Besides, no plotting of the value of the determinant versus assumed frequency is necessary. As the application of this method, some numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the accuracy as well as the capability of the proposed method for the vibration of structures.
Investigation of structural integrity has been a critical issue in the field of civil engineering for years. Visual inspection is one of the most available methods to explore deteriorative components in structures. Still, this method is not applicable to invisible damage of structures. Alternatively, system identification methods are capable of tracking modal properties of structures over time. The deviation of these dynamic properties can serve as indicators to access structural integrity. In this study, a modal tracking technique using frequency-domain system identification from seismic responses of structures is proposed. The method first segments the measured signals into overlapped sequential portions and then establishes multiple Hankel matrices. Each Hankel matrix is then converted to the frequency domain, and a temporal-average frequency-domain Hankel matrix can be calculated. This study also proposes the frequency band selection that can divide the frequency-domain Hankel matrix into several portions in accordance with referenced natural frequencies. Once these referenced natural frequencies are unavailable, the first few right singular vectors by the singular value decomposition can offer these references. Finally, the frequency-domain stochastic subspace identification tracks the natural frequencies and mode shapes of structures through quick stabilization diagrams. To evaluate performance of the proposed method, a numerical study is carried out. Moreover, the long-term monitoring strong motion records at a specific site are exploited to assess the tracking performance. As seen in results, the proposed method is capable of tracking modal properties through seismic responses of structures.

This study is to analyzes the global behavior of frame structures with local cracks in structural members by frame analysis, using the stiffness matrix of cracked frame element. This local compliance is utilized to derive the stiffness matrix of the cracked frame element and the effects of interaction among multiple cracks are also examined. The proposed technique is applied to frame structures with local cracks. Analysis results confirm the possibility of quantitative analysis of a structure damaged with local cracks and the feasibility of the technique as a tool for analyzing the global behavior of frame structures, reflecting effects of local cracks.
