  • In this study, a new practical method of predicting the sound absorption coefficient for multiple perforated-plate sound absorbing system was developed using transfer matrix method. In order to validate the proposed method, the absorption coefficients calculated by transfer matrix method for single perforated plate were first compared with the absorption coefficients measured by SWR method according to different porosity, hole diameter, and thickness of the perforated plate. Based on the comparison results, transfer matrix method was further applied to double and triple perforated plates to evaluate the absorption coefficients. The experimental results showed that the absorption coefficients from transfer matrix method generally agreed well with the corresponding absorption coefficients from SWR method. However, due to the limitations of the impedance model used in this study, the measured values were differed with the calculated values for small porosity, hole diameter, and thickness in size of the perforated plate indicating the need of impedance model development for multiple perforated-plate sound absorbing system covering wide ranges of porosity, hole diameter, and thickness of the perforated plate.

  • The aim of this study is to evaluate the microstructure and tensile property of in-situ (TiB+TiC) particulate reinforced titanium matrix composites (TMCs) synthesized by the investment casting process. Boron carbide ($1,500{\mu}m$ and $150{\mu}m$) was added to the titanium matrix during vacuum induction melting, which can provide the in-situ reaction of $5Ti+B_4C{\rightarrow}4TiB+TiC$. 0.94, 1.88 and 3.76 wt% of $B_4C$ were added to the melt. The phases identification of the in-situ synthesized TMCs was examined using scanning electron microscopy, an X-ray diffractometer, an electron probe micro-analyzer and transmission electron microscopy. Tensile properties of TMCs were investigated in accordance with the reinforcement size and volume fraction. The improvement of tensile property of titanium matrix composites was caused by load transfer from the titanium matrix to the reinforcement and by grain refinement of titanium matrix and reinforcements.

  • We consider the problem of identifying multiple outliers in linear model. The available regression diagnostic methods often do not succeed in detecting multiple outliers because of the masking and swamping effect. Recently, among the various robust estimator of reducing the effect of outliers, LMS(Least Meadian Square) estimator has been to be a suitable method proposed to expose outliers and leverage points. However, as you know it, the data analysis method with LMS estimator is to be taken the median of the squared residuals in the sample which is extracted the sample space. Then this model causes the trouble, for the number of the chosen sample is nCp, i.e. as the size of sample space n is increasing, the number is increasing fastly. And the covariance matrix may be the singular matrix, so that matrix is approching collinearity. Thus we propose a procedure ELMS for the resampling in LMS method and study the size of the effective elementary set in this algorithm.

  • In this paper, the system-level performance is evaluated for the feedback scheme on the pre-coding matrix index (PMI) and channel quality indication (CQI), which are required for user selection in the multi-user MIMO system. Our analysis demonstrates that the number of users, the number of selected users, and codebook size are the key factors that govern the performance of the best companion grouping (BCG)-based user scheduling. Accordingly, we have confirmed that the probability of forming the co-scheduled user group is determined by these factors, which implies that the number of PMI's and codebook size can be dynamically determined so as to maximize the average system throughput as the number of users varies in the cell.

  • In this paper, we propose a new machine vision algorithm for automatic defect detection on patterned textures with the help of texture-periodicity and the Jensen-Shannon Divergence, which is a symmetrized and smoothed version of the Kullback-Leibler Divergence. Input defective images are split into several blocks of the same size as the size of the periodic unit of the image. Based on histograms of the periodic blocks, Jensen-Shannon Divergence measures are calculated for each periodic block with respect to itself and all other periodic blocks and a dissimilarity matrix is obtained. This dissimilarity matrix is utilized to get a matrix of true-metrics, which is later subjected to Ward's hierarchical clustering to automatically identify defective and defect-free blocks. Results from experiments on real fabric images belonging to 3 major wallpaper groups, namely, pmm, p2, and p4m with defects, show that the proposed method is robust in finding fabric defects with a very high success rates without any human intervention.

  • This paper describes an improved Prony method in its speed, accuracy and reliability by efficiently determining the optimal sampling interval with use of DFT (discrete Fourier transformation). In the Prony method the computation time is dominated by the size of the linear prediction matrix, which is given by the number of data times the modeling order The size of the matrix in a general Prony method becomes large because of large number of data and so does the computation time. It is found that the Prony method produces satisfactory results when SNR is greater than three. The maximum sampling interval resulting minimum computation time is determined using the fact that the spectrum in DFT is inversely proportional to sampling interval. Also the process of computing the modes is made efficient by applying Hessenberg method to the companion matrix with complex shift and computing selectively only the dominant modes of interest. The proposed method is tested against the 2003 KEPCO system and found to be efficient and reliable. The proposed method may play a key role in monitoring in real time low frequency oscillations of power systems .

  • The Finite Element Method has been employed to calculate the effect of particle size, matrix, and volume fractions on the stress-strain relations of .alpha.-.betha. titanium alloys. It was found that for a given volume fraction, the calculated stress-strain curve was higher for a finer particle size than for a coarse particle size within the range of the strains considered, and this behavior was seen for all the different volume fraction alloys considered. The calculated stress-strain curves for three vol. pct .alpha. alloys were compared with their corresponding experimental curve, and in general, good agreement was found.

  • The influence of the particle size of quartz and the change of cooling rate to the strength of conventional triaxial porcelain was studied, . The results indicate that 1. The residual quartz content was increased by particle size increasing. And the strength was increased by increas-ing residual quartz content which increased the total stress in the specimen. But the influence of residual quartz was lessened by the extent of crack between quartz particle and glass matrix 2. In order to increase the strength of the body fast cooling is suitable to small quartz particle and slow cooling is suitable to large quartz particle.

  • The puncture properties of short-fiber reinforced rubber were investigated as functions of fiber aspect ratio(AR: length of fiber/diameter of fiber), fiber content, specimen size and testing velocity. The puncture stresses of the matrix and short-fiber reinforced rubber decreased with specimen size, and increased with testing velocity at same specimen size. As the fiber AR increased the puncture stress at given fiber content also increased. The problem of the specimen shape was investigated by the comparison of the tensile strength with puncture stress. The forces acting in the membrane wall of the matrix and the short-fiber reinforced rubber showed a similar data regardless of specimen size. And those increased with testing velocity at same specimen size. As the fiber AR increased the force acting in the wall at given fiber content also increased. Overall, it was found that the specimen size, testing velocity had an important effects on the puncture properties.

  • The microstructure of 95wt.%Pb/5wt.%Sn and 63wt.%Sn/37wt.%Pb solders for flip chip bonding process has been characterized. Solders were deposited by thermal evaporation and reflowed in the conventional furnace or by rapid thermal annealing(RTA) process. As-deposited films show columnar structure. The microstructure of furnace cooled 63Sn/37Pb solder shows typical lamellar form, but that of RTA treated solder has the structure showing an uniform dispersion of Pb-rich phase in Sn matrix. The grain size of 95Pb/5Sn solder reflowed in the furnace is about $5\mu\textrm{m}$, but the grain size of RTA treated solder is too small to be observed. The microstructure in 63Sn/37Pb solder bump shows the segregation of Pb phase in the Sn rich matrix regardless of reflowing method. The 63Sn/37Pb solder bump formed by RTA process shows more uniform microstructure. These result are related to the heat dissipation in the solder bump.
