The effect of size and volume fraction of ceramic particles with sliding velocity on the wear properties were investigated for the metal matrix composites fabricated by pressureless infiltration process. The particulate metal matrix composites exhibited about 5.5 - 6 times of excellent wear resistance compared with AC8A alloy at high sliding velocity, and as increasing the particle size and decreasing the volume fraction the wear resistance was improved. The wear resistance of metal matrix composites and AC8A alloy exhibited different aspects. Wear loss of AC8A alloy increased with sliding velocity linearly. whereas metal matrix composites indicated more wear loss than AC8A alloy at slow velocity region, however a transition point of wear loss was found at middle velocity region which show the minimum wear loss, and wear loss at high velocity region exhibited nearly same value with slow velocity region. In terms of wear mechanism, the metal matrix composites exhibited the abrasive wear at slow to high sliding velocity generally, however AC8A alloy showed abrasive wear at low sliding velocity and adhesive and melt wear at high sliding velocity.
The high temperature deformation behavior of $SiC_p/Al-Si$ composites and Al-Si matrix was studied by hot torsion test in a range of temperature from $270^{\circ}C$ to $520^{\circ}C$ and at strain rate range of $1.2{\times}10_{-3}~2.16{\times}10_{-1}/sec$. The hot restoration mechanisms for both matrix and composites were found to be dynamic recrystallization(DRX) from the investigation of flow curves and microstructural evolutions. The Si precipitates and SiC particles promoted DRX, and the peak strain$({\varepsilon}_p)$ of the composites was smaller than that of the matrix. Flow stresses of $SiC_p/Al-Si$ composites were found to be generally higher than the matrix, but the difference was quite small at higher temperature due to the decrease of capability of load transfer by SiC particles. With increasing temperature, failure strain of matrix and composites are inclined to increase, the increasing value of failure strain for the $SiC_p/Al-Si$ composites was small compared to that of matrix. The stress dependence of both materials on strain rate() and temperature(T) was examined by hyperbolic sine law, $\.{\varepsilon}=A_1[sinh({\alpha}{\cdot}{\sigma})]_n$exp(-Q/RT)
In part forming process of metal matrix composites, the die casting and squeeze casting process are limited the size and dimension in term of final parts without machining. The thixoforming process for metal matrix composites has numerous advantages compared to die casting squeeze casting and compocasting. However, for the thixoforming process, the billet with the desired volume fraction must be heated to obtain a uniform temperature distribution over the entire cross-sectional areas. To obtain the reheating conditions of composites, the particulate reinforced metal matrix composites for thixoforming were fabricated by combined stirring process which is simultaneously performed with electro-magnetic stirring and mechanical stirring process.
It is well known that the fabrication process of carbon/carbon composites is very complex. Above all, the carbonization process have major effect on the morphology development of carbon matrix. Carbon/carbon composites of 4-directional fiber preform were fabricated using the coal tar based pitch as a matrix precursor in this study. According to carbonization pressure of 1 bar, 100 bar, 600 bar, and 900 bar, morphological changes of cokes and matrix of composites were discussed. As the carbonization pressure increased to 600 bar, the flow pattern morphology of bulk mesophse was well developed. On the contrary, mosaic pattern morphology was found in case of 900 bar of carbonization pressure. It is confirmed that the carbonization pressure have profound effect on the degree of graphitization and crystal size of carbon matrix. Even in the highly densified carbon/carbon composites, large voids were still found in the matrix pocket region.
Braided carbon fiber reinforced Al matrix composites were developed and characterized. Braided carbon fiber preforms with braiding angles of $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$ were manufactured by using a braiding machine. The manufactured braided carbon fibers were used as reinforcement to fabricate Al matrix composites by employing a pressure infiltration casting method. In the processing of pressure infiltration casting, important processing parameters such as melting temperature, preheating temperature of preform and applied pressure were optimized. Prediction of elastic constants on composites was performed by using the volume averaging method, which utilizes the coordinate transformation and the averaging of stiffeness and compliance constants based upon the volume of each reinforcement and matrix material. The elastic moduli of composites were evaluated by using Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy(RUS) method and compared with the elastic moduli obtained from static tensile test method.
Metal matrix composites(MMCs) are increasingly attractive for high technology components such as aerospace applications and transportations due to their high strength, stiffness, and toughness. Many processes for fabricating MMCs have been developed, and relatively simple Foil-Fiber-Foil method is usually employed in solid state consolidation processes. During the consolidation processes at high temperature, densification occurs by the inelastic flow of the matrix materials, and the process is coupled with the conditions of pressure, temperature and volume fraction of fiber and matrix materials. This is particularly important in titanium matrix composites, and thus a generic model based on micro-mechanical approaches enabling the evolution of density over time to be predicted has been developed. The mode developed is then implemented into FEM so that practical process simulation has been carried out. Further the experimental investigation of the consolidation behavior of SiC/Ti-6Al-4V composites using vacuum hot pressing has been performed, and the results obtained are compared with the model predictions.
Effective properties of ceramic matrix plain woven textile composites were calculated using finite element analysis. The considered geometry is a unit cell of plain weave and the analysis was performed by commercial finite element program, ANSYS. The materials for analysis are 3 types for matrix, 1 type for fiber with various volume fraction. The result indicates that the effective properties of ceramic matrix composites can be controlled by the volume fraction. The result can be used for numerical analysis using ceramic matrix composites.
In this work, the carbon fibers-reinforced carbon matrix composites made with different carbon char yields of phenolic resin matrix have been characterized by mechanical flexural tests for acoustic emission properties. The composites had been fabricated in the form of two-dimensional polyacrylonitrile based carbon fibers during the carbonization process. It was found that the composites made with the carbon char yield-rich of resin matrix result in better mechanical interfacial properties, i.e., the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the composites. The data obtained from the acoustic emission monitored appeared to show that the composites made with carbon char yield-rich were also more ductile. From the acoustic emission results, the primary composite failure was largely depended on the debonding at interfaces between fibers and matrix. The interlaminar shear strengths of the composites were correlated with the acoustic emission results.
The wear behavior of epoxy matrix composites filled with nano sized silica particles is discussed in this paper. Especially, the variation of the coefficient of friction and the wear resistance according to the change of apply load and sliding velocity were investigated for these materials. Wear tests of pin-on-disc mode were carried out and the wear test results exhibited as following ; The epoxy matrix composites showed lower coefficient of friction compared to the neat epoxy through the whole sliding distance. As increasing the sliding velocity the epoxy matrix composites indicated lower coefficient of friction, whereas the neat epoxy showed higher coefficient of friction as increasing the sliding velocity. The specific friction work of both materials were increased with apply load. In case of the epoxy matrix composites, the running in periods of friction were reduced as increase in apply load. The epoxy matrix composites were improved the wear resistance by adding the nano silica particles remarkably. It is expected that the load carrying capacity of the epoxy matrix composites will be improved by increase of Pv factor.
Metal matrix composites with whisker reinforcements have significant potential for demanding mechanical applications including defense, aerospace, and automotive industries. Especially, metal matrix composites, which are reinforced with aluminum borate whisker, have been used for the part of piston head in automobile because of good specific strength and wear resistance. Aluminum alloy-based metal matrix composites with whisker reinforcements have been produced using squeeze casting method, which is kind of an infiltration method. In this study, AC4CH-based metal matrix composites with $Al_{18}B$_4$O_{33}$ reinforcement have been produced using squeeze casting method, after T6 heat treatment, we evaluated mechanical properties of matrix and MMC composite were evaluated.
