공과대학생들의 수리 - 공간 - 언어 능력 사이의 관계 및 성별 차이에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Relation among Mathematical - Spatial - Verbal Abilities and Gender Differences of Engineering Students)

  • Mathematical, spatial, and verbal abilities are important for future engineers to succeed in the STEM disciplines. The purpose of the study is to assess engineering students' spatial abilities and analyse the relationship with mathematical achievement, verbal achievement, and gender. On the mental rotation tests, 65% of male students demonstrated a substantial level of spatial abilities. But only 30% of female students exhibited spatial skills at the same level as their male colleagues. The correlations between mathematical - spatial - verbal abilities are found to be negligible. When spatial visualization ability was plotted according to the mathematical achievement level, there was no difference in the mean spatial abilities score. But when mathematical achievement score was plotted according to the spatial abilities, there was a noticeable difference. Regression analysis confirmed that female students' mathematical achievement increased as spatial abilities improved. This phenomenon was not observed for male students. It's because male students' spatial ability already contributed to their mathematics achievement. So spatial ability can be regarded as one factor for the gender differences in mathematics achievement. The gender gap on spatial abilities and math achievement is large among high achieving students. For example, there was a 4.3 to 1 male - female ratio and 3.4 to 1 male - female ratio among students scoring 99th percentile in spatial visualization test and scholastic aptitude test-math.

  • In linear algebra course, the theory of vector space is usually presented in a very formal setting, which causes severe difficulties to many students. In this study, the effect of teaching the theory of vector space in linear algebra from the geometrical point of view on students' learning was investigated. It was found that the teaching of the theory of vector space in linear algebra from the geometrical point of view increases the meaningful loaming since it increases the visualization.

  • The purpose of this paper is to explain and reinterprets Apollonius' Symptoms on conic sections based on the current secondary curriculum of mathematics, present the historical background of Apollonius' Symptoms to teachers and students and introduce visualization proof of Apollonius' symptoms on a parabola, a hyperbola and an ellipse by a new method using dynamic geometry software(GSP) respectively.

  • Visualization of 2D and 3D data, which arises from some scientific phenomena, physical model or mathematical formula, in the form of curve or surface view is one of the important topics in Computer Graphics. The problem gets critically important when data possesses some inherent shape feature. For example, it may have positive feature in one instance and monotone in the other. This paper is concerned with the solution of similar problems when data has convex shape and its visualization is required to have similar inherent features to that of data. A rational cubic function [5] has been used for the review of visualization of 2D data. After that it has been generalized for the visualization of 3D data. Moreover, simple sufficient constraints are made on the free parameters in the description of rational bicubic functions to visualize the 3D convex data in the view of convex surfaces.

K-WAIS와 비행훈련장치 평가를 활용한 비행적성 검사에 대한 퍼지모형 연구 (A study on Fuzzy model for flight aptitude using K-WAIS and FTD test)

  • In order to study the effect of K-WAIS and FTD on flight aptitude, which we utilize to sort out good pilot candidates among applicants, we adopted Fuzzy regression model and expressed the result of flight aptitude tests in Fuzzy number by using maximum/minimum values and mean values. The 7 aspects of K-WAIS were broken down into three similar groups: mathematical ability, visualization ability and organization ability. While mathematical ability and organization ability showed a positive relevance with the FTD test with respect to flight aptitude, visualization ability of K-WAIS showed a negative(-) relevance with flight aptitude, which presented an opposite result to the previous research. Thus, we are to increase the number of samples and do the research thereof in the near future.

  • 본 연구는 미적분학의 입실론-텔타(${\epsilon}-{\delta}$)에 의한 엄밀한 함수의 극한값 구하기를 좀 더 직관적이며 시각화를 이용한 지도 방안을 탐색해 보고자 한다. 이를 위하여 Texas Instruments의 Voyage200 CAS 그래핑 계산기의 임베디드 시각화를 활용하여 미적분학 지도에서 공학 활용의 가능성을 제기하고자 한다. 이를 위하여 개념이미지와 개념정의, 인지적 갈등, 미적분 개념에 대한 공학과 시각화의 활용, APOS 이론, 그리고 국소적 수평화를 중심으로 이론적 고찰을 실시했다. 이러한 이론적 고찰을 토대로 CAS 그래핑 계산기의 임베디드 시각화를 활용하여 함수의 극한을 구하는 지도 방안을 구현하였다.

From Visualization to Computer Animation Approaches in Mathematics Learning: the Legacy throughout History of Human Endeavours for Better Understanding

  • Presently, there has been growing interests in using mathematics' history in teaching mathematics [Katz, V. & Tzanakis, C. (Eds.) (2011). Recent Developments on Introducing a Historical Dimension in Mathematics Education. Washington, DC: Mathematical Association of America]. Thus, this article introduces some work of scholars from ancient East Indian culture like Bhaskara (AD 1114-1185) and Arabic culture such as Ibn Qurrah (AD 9th c) that are related to Pythagoras Theorem. In addition, some Babylonian creative works related to Pythagorean triples found in a tablet known as 'Plimpton 322', and an application of the Pythagorean Theorem found in another tablet named 'Yale Tablet' are presented. Applications of computer animation of dissection Motion Operations concept in 2D and 3D using dynamic software like Geometer's-Sketchpad and Cabri-II-and-3D. Nowadays, creative minds are attracted by the recent stampede in the advances of technological applications in visual literacy; consequently, innovative environments that would help young students, gifted or not, acquiring meaningful conceptual understanding would immerge.

Biot의 원뿔곡선에 관한 conjecture의 재해석 (Reinterpretation of the Biot's conjecture on conics)

  • In this study, we investigate the latus rectum, one of the geometric measures of the conics, as one of the ways in which learners harmonize the geometric and algebraic approaches to conics from a pedagogical point of view. We also introduce the conical curve of Biot as presented in 'The Discourse on the Latus Rectum in conics(2013)' by Takeshi Sugimoto and reinterpret it for visualization and use as teaching material. Therefore, we expect that the importance of mathematical concepts will be recognized in conics and students can experience geometry learning that is explored in the school field and have a positive effect in developing the power to apply even in the context of applied problems.

  • 이 연구는 수학적 재능이 있다고 판단되는 네 명의 중학교 3학년 학생들을 대상으로 그래핑계산기를 활용한 탐구학습을 진행하고, 그 과정에서 수집된 질적자료를 '수학적 의사소통/시각화'의 측면에서 분석하여 다음 사항들을 발견하였다. 첫째, 그래핑계산기는 탐구학습 과정에서 학생들끼리 또는 학생과 교사 사이의 수학적 의사소통을 증진시킨다. 둘째, 그래핑계산기는 탐구학습 과정에서 개방적인 분위기를 유도한다. 셋째, 그래핑계산기는 '시각정 상'에 관련되 새로운 학습 환경을 제공함으로써, 학생들이 더 고차적인 수학적 관계를 탐구할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다.

중학교 3학년 수학 영재 학생들을 위한 수학적 모델링 교수.학습 자료의 개발 및 적용: 쓰나미를 소재로 (Development and Application of Teaching-Learning Materials for Mathematically-Gifted Students by Using Mathematical Modeling -Focus on Tsunami-)

  • 본 연구는 수학적 모델링 수업이 수학 영재 학생들에게 문제해결의 기회를 제공하고 수학적 모델링 활동을 통해 다양한 수학적 사고력을 발전시킬 수 있다는 가정 하에 중학교 3학년 수학 영재 학생들을 위한 수학적 모델링 교수 학습 자료를 개발하였다. 개발된 교수 학습 자료를 적용하여 사례연구를 통해 수학적 모델링의 단계별 활동과정을 살펴보고 각 단계에서 어떠한 수학적 사고능력이 나타나는지 분석하였다. 수학적 모델링 과정에서 다양한 수학적 사고능력이 나타났는데 문제를 이해하는 실세계 탐구과정에서는 정보의 조직화 능력이, 상황모델을 개발하는 과정에서는 직관적 통찰능력, 공간화/시각화 능력, 수학적 추론 능력, 반성적 사고 능력이 나타났다. 수학모델 개발과정에서는 수학적 추상화 능력, 공간화/시각화 능력, 수학적 추론 능력, 반성적 사고가 나타났으며 모델적용 과정에서는 일반화 및 적용 능력과 반성적 사고가 나타났다. 모델링 수업이 진행됨에 따라 반성적 사고능력이 더 많이 나타나는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
