  • Engineering asset management (EAM) requires the accurate assessment of current and the prediction of future asset health condition. Suitable mathematical models that are capable of predicting time-to-failure and the probability of failure in future time are essential. In general reliability models, lifetime of component and system is estimated using failure time data. This paper deals with the reliability assessment of elevators using life of main components. Especially this work is concerned with the stochastic nature of life of elevator components. First, we investigate the Weibull statistical analysis of lifetime data for the components. The final goal is to establish the mathematical model for reliability assessment. This work provides more perspectives to future research in the fields of reliability and maintainability.

  • To satisfy the requirement for the precision and productivity of machine tools, we need the technique to predict the surface roughness of workpiece under various cutting conditions. The surface roughness is mainly influenced by the ideal roughness i. e., the roughness by feeding quantity and geometry of the tool. In this paper, the surface roughness is divided into three zones and the mathematical models of the three zones are obtained, in consideration of the feeding conditions and tool geometry. Using the mathematical models, we developed a program to calculate the maximum feeding quantity satisfying the required surface roughness of the workpiece. The program is used to calculate the maximum feed for two kinds of the bites used under the real cutting condition.

  • Cold rolling mill process in steel works uses stands of rolls to flatten a strip to a desired thickness. Most of rolling processes use mathematical models to predict rolling force which is very important to decide the resultant thickness of a coil. In general, these mathematical models are not flexible for variant coil types and cannot handle various elements which is practically important to decide accurate rolling force. A corrective neural network is proposed to improve the accuracy of rolling force prediction. Additional variables-composition of the coil, coiling temperature and working roll parameters-are fed to the network. The model uses an MLP with BP to predict a corrective coefficient. The test results using 1,586 process data collected at POSCO in early 1995 show that the proposed model reduced the prediction error by 30% on average.

  • This paper addresses the facility layout problem in multi-bay environments, where the bays are connected at one or both ends by an inter-bay material handling system. In most previous studies, the main concern is to allocate facilities or departments to the bays whose widths are fixed. In this research, we suggest the efficient models that provide the optimal layout solution under flexible bay width environments. We also suggest a mathematical model that provides the optimal solution using two-way facility allocation approach instead of one-way allocation technique. This paper also shows the approach of TABU search to the assignment and layout design of the departments. The results generated from TABU search are compared to the result from the mathematical model. Models are developed using mixed integer programming for various test problems and solved by CPLEX.

  • This study carries out the performance improvement and simplification of hydraulic modulator that plays an important role in vehicle stability control systems. The mathematical models for each component of a modulator, such as pump, wheel cylinder, check and solenoid valve, accumulator, damper are derived in detail. All the mathematical models are combined to form a modulator system and implemented through a computer program, which can be controlled by a user friendly GUI. To verity the simulation, comparison between simulation and experiments has been made. After the verification of the validity of the simulation, the effects of the design parameters of the modulator on the wheel cylinder pressure is investigated. The results show that the modulator without MPA has advantage in early time pressure rise rate, and it can be simplified.

  • For prediction and control of sound, acoustic systems must be modeled. Because sound systems like exhaust systems are very difficult to calculate mathematically, this study presents a method to determine experimentally the order of poles by transfer function. When designing a control system by traditional methods the exact model order and coefficient of the system to be controlled must be determined. But in acoustic systems, where systems to be controlled are very complex, mathematical interpretation is almost always impossible. Therefore transversal filters using trial and error methods to determine model order of a system are used to design a system. Compared to mathematical models with poles, transversal filters, in which the model order becomes relatively large, have the disadvantage of prolonged processing time and marked time delay. This study presents a method to determine experimentally the order of poles in a system model with poles and zeroes. Also, the validity of this method was verified mathematically and confirmed by application in general simple models and acoustic tube simulators.

  • In this paper, a kind of pest-predator model with impulsive effect and infinite delay is considered by the method of chain transform. By using Floquet's theorem, it is shown that there exists a globally asymptotically stable periodic pest eradication solution when the impulsive period is less than or equal to some critical value which is a directly proportional function with respect to the population of release. Furthermore, it is proved that the system is permanent if the impulsive period is larger than some critical value. Finally, the results of the corresponding systems are compared, those results obtained in this paper are confirmed by numerical simulation.

  • In this paper we study implicit-explicit (IMEX) methods combined with a semi-Lagrangian scheme to evaluate the prices of fixed strike arithmetic Asian options under jump-diffusion models. An Asian option is described by a two-dimensional partial integro-differential equation (PIDE) that has no diffusion term in the arithmetic average direction. The IMEX methods with the semi-Lagrangian scheme to solve the PIDE are discretized along characteristic curves and performed without any fixed point iteration techniques at each time step. We implement numerical simulations for the prices of a European fixed strike arithmetic Asian put option under the Merton model to demonstrate the second-order convergence rate.

  • The importance of statistics in everyday life and work place has led to calls for an increased attention to statistical literacy in the mathematics curriculum both internationally and domestically. While professional organizations and researchers propose perspectives towards and models of statistical literacy, conceptions and elements of statistical literacy vary. This study examines how mathematics textbook questions fulfill the requirements of statistical literacy by employing two models: Watson's model focusing on understanding of statistical language and Curcio's model on data interpretation aspects of statistical literacy. For this, a total of 872 problem questions presented in the statistics units of from ten textbooks for the middle school year 1 mathematics were analyzed.

  • This study aims to find out a suitable mathematical models for the estimation of population size and improve it for the estimation of social increase of population at urban areas. This study shows that Model (I) is obtained by the generalization of Kabak's Wild Life Management Model together with some other useful results as follows: a) By the transition matrix P, it is known that the interregional migrations have shown greater rise than those of five years ago. b) The invariant population vector $\alpha$ predicts that the Kyonggi area will have a share of 48%, the Choongcheong area of 10%, the Honam area of 12%, and the Youngnam area of 17% of the total population of Korea. c) The estimated population of the Special City of Seoul (Metropolitan) will be above ten millon in 1983. d) The estimated optmum population of Korea will be 53,850,000 in 2000 A.D.
