This study examined risk and protective variables related with the continuity of developmental risks among 136 infants, aged 4-10 months. Using the Denver Developmental Screening Test, 136 infants among 2978 infants in the first wave of the Korea Child Panel were classified into the developmental risk group. Among the 136 risk group infants, 45 infants stayed in the risk group (continuing risk group) and the other 91 infants moved into the normal group (recovering risk group) after 1 year. Group differences were tested in the levels of infant, mother and father variables to examine which variables were associated with the continuity of developmental risks for a year. Variables indicating parents' marital relationships such as the mothers' marital satisfaction and conflict of the first wave and the fathers' marital satisfaction of the second wave significantly distinguished the continuing from the recovering risk group. In addition, there were significant group differences in the levels of mothers' self-efficacy in the first wave. The findings suggest that the exposure to marital conflict during infancy is associated with the continuity of developmental risks.
This study had a purpose to present a comprehensive grasp of the variables that influence a sense of self-identity in children of multi-cultural families. The participants were 310 elementary school children from the fourth to sixth grades and who were currently enrolled in North Jeolla Province. The results were as follows. First, no significant difference was found for a sense of self-identity according to the children's gender. But a significant difference was found according to the nationality of the mothers. Second, the boys' self-identity was affected by mother's rejection of discipline/reprimand behaviors and the girls' self-identity was affected by school satisfaction. Last, children's selfidentity was affected by the mother's nationality(Japan, China, and Philippine).

Purpose: Although Hemophilia is a relatively rare hereditary disease, and is treatable with blood products, the parenting stress and guilt of hemophilic patients and their mothers are always high. This study was done to assess the extent of parenting stress, guilt, parenting attitude and parenting satisfaction of mothers with a hemophilic child. Method: The participants in this study were 119 mothers with a hemophilic child who were registered members of the Korea Hemophilia Foundation, and 287 mothers with a healthy child. In order to measure the dimensions related to parenting stress, guilt, parenting attitude and parenting satisfaction, the Questionnaire on Parenting Stress Index, Maternal Guilt Scale, Parenting Attitude Scale & Parenting Satisfaction Scale were administered. We analysed the differences between mothers with a hemophilic child and a healthy child in the questionnaire scores using the SPSS program. Result: Parenting stress and guilt of mothers with a hemophilic child were higher than with a healthy child. Parenting attitude and parenting satisfaction of mothers with a hemophilic child were lower than with a healthy child. Conclusion: The results may help medical professionals understand mothers with a hemophilic child and give basic assistance to develop a nursing intervention by exploring possible ways to alleviate such parenting stress and guilt.
This study sought to clarify the relation of children's suicidal ideation and parental depression/life satisfaction, and the mediating effect of the self-esteem in child. With regard to suicidal ideation in children, most studies have used children's depression as predictor, not parental depression. Similarly, parental life satisfaction have not been included in spite of its general influence on child development. Relations among these variables were examined in 512 children and their parents in $7^{th}$ Korean welfare panel data using the structural equation model. Results showed that the maternal life satisfaction was the only significant factor affecting the suicidal ideation of children, no having the mediating effects of the self-esteem in child. The implication of these results and suggestions for intervention and prevention work, and future research are discussed.
Purpose: This study was conducted to discover the related factors of neonatal suckling in the initiation of breastfeeding in primiparous mothers and to provide basic data for promoting nursing intervention strategies to improve the practice of breastfeeding. Method: The subjects of this study were 71 primiparous mothers who had normal vaginal deliveries at one obstetric hospital in P metropolitan city and one delivery center in J city. The collected data was analyzed using the SPSS program. Result: The average IBFAT(Infant Breastfeeding Assessment Tool) score was 9.6$\pm$2.3. The general characteristics studied that had a significant influence on neonatal suckling in the initiation of breastfeeding were the place of delivery (ex: Hospital, Postnatal Unit), whether oxytocin was used, no usage of analgesic medication, amount of satisfaction after the first breastfeeding weight of the newborns and the Apgar score at one minute. Conclusions: A higher IBFAT score was related to primiparous mothers who had a hospital delivery, received oxytocin, received maternal labour analgesics, neonatal weight, Apgar score at one minute, and satisfaction after the first breastfeeding.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine nursing students' satisfaction level with PBL-based clinical practice, their autonomy, achievement motivation and what affected them in those regards in an attempt to lay the groundwork for providing more systematic and efficient clinical practice, Method: The subjects III this study were 138 nursing sophomores at J college who participated in PBL-based clinical practice, Results: They got a mean of 3.34, 3.83 and 3.83 in satisfaction level with the clinical practice, autonomy and achievement motivation respectively. In regard to the relationship of the satisfaction level to general characteristics including motivation of choosing the major and time for undergoing the clinical practice, the students who decided to major in nursing at their own option(3.61) were most contented with practice teaching(F=6.356, p<.01), and those who underwent the clinical practice after taking lessons(3.82) were most pleased with the content of the clinical practice (t=2.129, p<.05). Concerning connections between autonomy and general characteristics involving age, satisfaction with the major and time for the clinical practice, the students who were at the age of 22(3.92) valued themselves the most(F=3.003, P<.05). And those who found their major satisfactory (4.28) and undergo the clinical practice after taking lessons(4.37) respected others the most(F=3.133, p<.01). As to relations between achievement motivation and general characteristics, the students who were contented with their major(4.00) excelled the others who weren't in that aspect(F=6.038, p<.01). The satisfaction level with the clinical practice was positively correlated to autonomy (r=.328, p<.01) and achievement motivation(r=.476, p<.01). Conclusions: The findings illustrated that the nursing students expressed the satisfaction with the PBL-based clinical practice education. The older students who were 22 years old were more autonomous, and those who took part in the clinical practice after receiving theoretical instruction were more autonomous and more pleased with the practice. The students who found their major more satisfactory surpassed the others in autonomy and achievement motivation. There was positive correlation among the clinical-practice satisfaction level, autonomy and achievement motivation. There are some suggestions: Intensive research efforts should be directed into getting a profound grasp of PBL-based clinical practice education geared toward nursing students. The development of modules for PBL-based nursing clinical practice education was required. How to provide PBL-based theoretical education to nursing students should be studied.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare parenting stress between married migrant women and Korean women. Methods: Subjects were 68 married migrant women and 70 Korean women raising children aged seven years or younger, living in three different cities in Gangwon Do. To measure parenting stress, we used Kim's (1997) questionnaire that had been modified from Richard & Abidin's (1990) Parenting Stress Index (PSI). Results: There were significant differences between the two groups in age, academic credentials, job, monthly income, and achievement of maternal role. No statistically significant differences were found for parenting stress scores (p<.355), but there was a significant difference in the child characteristics of parenting stress (p<.007) between the two groups. There were no differences in the demographic variables influencing parenting stress between the two groups. Conclusion: The development of multi-cultural parenting and family support programs should consider the nationality and marital satisfaction of the family.
This study examined the effects of support systems and traditional value beliefs about the role of women on the parenting stress of dual-career mothers. The subjects were 203 employed mothers with one child 4- to 36-months of age. The influential independent variables affecting parenting stress listed in order of significance were satisfaction with child care, value placed on traditional maternal roles, sex of child, and cost of child care. Contrary to the researchers assumptions, social support systems had no effect on parenting stress. The results of this study have implications for formal and informal support systems for employed mothers with young children.
The purpose of this study was to examine the role of children's characteristics, family environment and child care quality in socio-emotional development of children among dual-worker families. The sample consisted of 138 children aged 5-7 and their parents. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, correlation analysis, one-way ANOVAs, and stepwise regression were used to analyze data. Results showed that there were significant sex differences in children's temperament and popularity. Mother's marital satisfaction had a negative correlation with peer rejection. Low maternal role conflict and child's age had effects on children's self-perception. Moreover, sex and age of the child, mothers' responsive parenting, number of teachers in the classroom were significant predictors for children's peer rejection.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the concept of caretaking behavior for children. This study adopts the methode of Walker and Avant in analysis. Based on the results of the study, the attributes, precedents, and consequences of caretaking behavior for children are follows ; 1. The affirmative attributes of caretaking behavior are affection binding, nutritional guidance, education, caring, protection moral training and acquisition of parents' role. The negative attributes of caretaking behavior are inconsistent moral training, incapability of affection binding and overprotection. 2. The precedent of caretaking behavior are postpartum contact with their babies, cognizance capacity of child-caretaking, economic support, level of preparation for child-caretaking and self-consciousness as parents. 3. The affirmative consequences of caretaking behavior are promotion of child growth and development, formation of maternal-infantile attachment, development of children sociality, satisfaction of parental role and reinforcement of relationship between the members of family. The negative consequences of caretaking behavior are burden and conflict to parental role, children's illness, role conflict and role stress among the members of the family and family breaking up.
