  • Vehicle vibrations arise from engine and road surface excitations. The engine mount system of a passenger car sustains the engine weight and insulates the excitation force from the engine system. The dynamic properties of viscoelastic material used for the vehicle engine mounts have large variation due to environmental factors such as environmental temperature and humidity etc. The present study aims to investigate the variability of dynamic characteristics in rubber engine mounts considering both environmental temperature change and material model errors/uncertainty. The engine mounts for a passenger car were modeled using finite element method. Then, the dynamic stiffness variability of the engine mounts were estimated using Monte Carlo simulation method. In order to estimate the variations in the storage and loss moduli of the viscoelastic materials, the material properties of the synthetic rubber were expressed as a fractional-derivative model. Next, in order to simulate the uncertainty propagation of the dynamic stiffness for the engine mounts due to the storage and loss moduli variations, the Monte Carlo simulation was used. The Monte Carlo simulation results showed large variation of the engine-mount stiffness along frequency axis.

  • It is reported that semi-solid forming process takes many advantages over the conventional forming process, such as a long die life, good mechanical properties and energy saves. It is important to predict the deformation behavior for optimization of the forging process with semi-solid materials and to control liquid segregation for mechanical properties of materials. But rheology material has thixotropic, pseudo-plastic and shear-thinning characteristics. So, it is difficult for a numerical simulation of the rheology process to be performed because complicated processes such as the filling to include the state of the free surface and solidification in the phase transformation must be considered. General plastic or fluid dynamic analysis is not suitable for the analysis of the rheology material behavior. Recently, molecular dynamics is used for the behavior analysis of the rheology material and turned out to be suitable among several methods. In this study, molecular dynamics simulation was performed for the control of liquid segregation, forming velocity, and viscosity in compression experiment as a part of study on the analysis of rheology forming process.

  • VCO(Voltage Controlled Oscillator) is one of the main components governing the size, performance and power consumption of telecommunication devices. As the devices become much smaller, VCO need to have much smaller size with better characteristics. Buried type passive components of L,C,R were developed previously and the structure of these components are good for minimizing the size of VCO. Our own library of passive components is used in simulation and fabrication of VCO circuit, and surface mounted components like varactor diode are analysed using the measurement circuit designed by ourselves. Two-Dimensional simulation of VCO circuit and local three-Dimensional structure simulation are performed and their relation is obtained. In structure of multi-layered VCO, some components governing the characteristics of VCO are selected and placed on the top of oscillator for the good tuning process. In resonator part, the stripline structure and low loss glass/ceramic material are used to get higher Q value. In our research, a VCO oscillates in the 2.3∼2.36 GHz band is developed.

  • Handling the manufacured goods is the most cost-consuming task in material handling system in wooden furniture industries. Fully automated warehouse for cartoned goods of a furniture manufacturing company was analized to provide plant engineers and managers with some important informations on the utility and profitability of the automated storage and retrieval system(AS/RS). Process-oriented simulation modeling tech-niques were used to describe the system and to propose some alternatives to promote the efficiency of AS/RS. Simulation report could be inter-preted as follows: 1. Warehouse for the furniture goods must be designed in accordance with reliable material handling program and constructed with suitable equipments depending on the specification of packed products. 2. An excess of palletized products induced the indigestion and the inefficiency of AS/RS of the furniture industry and put this high-costly system into the shade. 3. Overcrowded AS/RS of the furniture factories could regain its material handling function by cutting down the deposit of products into the automated warehouse. For this purpose, reducing the regular output and direct delivering the outside products to the destination should be considered as the definite counterplan. And additional operation of conventional handy warehouse was also expected to improve the efficiency of main AS/RS.

  • In this paper, scaling down characteristics of vertical channel phase random access memory are investigated with device simulator and finite element analysis simulator. Electrical properties of select transistor are obtained by device simulator and those of phase change material are obtained by finite element analysis simulator. From the fusion of both data, scaling properties of vertical channel phase change random access memory (VPCRAM) are considered with ITRS roadmap. Simulation of set reset current are carried out to analyze the feasibility of scaling down and compared with values in ITRS roadmap. Simulation results show that width and length ratio of the phase change material (PCM) is key parameter of scaling down in VPCRAM. Thermal simulation results provide the design guideline of VPCRAM. Optimization of phase change material in VPCRAM can be achieved by oxide sidewall process optimization.

  • In laser materials processing, localized heating, melting and evaporation caused by focused laser radiation forms a vapor on the material surface. The plume is generally an unstable entity, fluctuating according to its own dynamics. The beam is refracted and absorbed as it traverses the plume, thus modifying its power density on the surface of the condensed phases. This modifies material evaporation and optical properties of the plume. A laser-produced plasma plume simulation is completed using axisymmetric, high-temperature gas dynamic model including the laser radiation power absorption, refraction, and reflection. The physical properties and velocity profiles are verified using the published experimental and numerical results. The simulation results provide the effect of plasma plume fluctuations on the laser power density and quantitative beam radius changes on the material surface. It is proved that beam absorption, reflection and defocusing effects through the plume are essential to obtain appropriate mathematical simulation results. It is also found that absorption of the beam in the plume has much less direct effect on the beam power density at the material surface than defocusing does and helium gas is more efficient in reducing the beam refraction and absorption effect compared to argon gas for common laser materials processing.

  • In laser material processing for high thermal conductivity, the thermal effect of laser beam shape was examined through computer simulations. In this paper, a circular beam with a focal radius of $500{\mu}m$, an elliptical beam with a major axis of 4 mm and a minor axis of 1 mm, and a rotating beam with a focal radius of $500{\mu}m$ and an angular velocity of 5 rad/sec were compared. Simulation results showed that there was no clear difference in the maximum temperature between the circular focus and the elliptical shape, but the heating and cooling rates were different. The simulation result for a laser beam rotating in a circular pattern with a radius of 5 mm showed an asymmetric temperature rise due to the combination of linear and rotational motion. At points where the rotational and linear speeds combined, the temperature gradually rose and reached the maximum temperature; whereas at points where the rotational and linear speeds were attenuated, the temperature tended to gradually decrease after reaching the maximum temperature. Based on the results of this study, the authors expect to be able to optimize laser material processing by designing patterns of laser beams.

  • In this study, 3D visualization of the packing behavior of the charge material in a foundry was attempted. It was simulated based on the practical conditions of the charge material and the melting furnace. It was confirmed whether the 3D visual simulation realistically implements the packing behavior of the manufacturing site. The realistic packing state by the 3D visual simulation was compared with the ideal packing state. It was analyzed in which case the difference between the two packing states occurred. The advantages of applying the 3D visual simulation to the manufacturing process were investigated, and various application plans in the casting industry were proposed.

  • Polymers have become widely used substrate materials for shielding neutron rays because of their high hydrogen content and easy processing procedures. Rare-earth materials are also being gradually adopted as neutron absorbers because of their considerable thermal neutron absorption cross-sections. This paper utilizes the FLUKA Monte Carlo simulation program to compare the shielding effects of various polymers and rare-earth oxides on neutron rays across different energy ranges. The study investigates the superior shielding materials for neutron radiation in each energy range. Subsequently, a series of materials are simulated by combining the preferred shielding materials for neutron rays in each energy range, exploring the influence of material composition and composite structure on the effectiveness of neutron ray shielding. It is revealed that the preferred material for shielding neutron rays changes for different energy ranges. For low-energy neutron rays, rare-earth oxides such as Sm2O3 and Gd2O3 demonstrate the most effective shielding, whereas for high-energy neutron rays, polyethylene (PE) provides the best shielding performance. Materials with different compositions show varying preferred structures when dealing with a 252Cf neutron source. However, in mitigating the secondary gamma rays generated during the neutron shielding process, stacked-type materials exhibit the most effective shielding performance.
