  • Production of the silicon feedstock for the semiconductor industry cannot meet the requirement for the solar cell industry because the production volume is too small and production cost is too high. This situation stimulates the solar cell industry to try the lower grade silicon feedstock like UMG (Upgraded Metallurgical Grade) silicon of 5$\sim$6 N in purity. However, this material contains around 1 ppma of dopant atoms like boron or phosphorous. Calculation of the composition profile of these impurities using segregation coefficient during crystal growth makes us expect the change of the type from p to n : boron rich area in the early solidified part and phosphorous rich area in the later solidified part of the silicon ingot. It was expected that the change of the growth speed during the silicon crystal growth is effective in controlling the amount of the metal impurities but not effective in reducing the amount of dopants.

  • High-strength aluminum alloy sheets with high magnesium contents were fabricated by a strip caster equipped with an asymmetric nozzle, which has been proven to be effective for reducing surface defects and internal segregation. 4 mm thick as-cast sheets consisting of fine dendrites and minor $Al_{8}Mg_{5}$ segregation were hot-rolled successfully to 1 mm sheets and subsequently annealed at various temperatures. The sheet revealed the tensile strength and elongation of 306 MPa and 34%, respectively, when it was rolled at 250${^{\circ}C}$ and subsequently annealed at 475${^{\circ}C}$, which exhibits the feasibility of the practical application for autobodies. The observed mechanical properties were explained on the basis of the microstructural characteristics of the alloy sheets.

  • Ogbang scheelite deposit imbedded in amphibolite of unknown age was believed, by the previous workers, to be of pegmatite vein. The vein material is composed mainly of plagioclase (albite and oligoclase) and minor amount (less than 5 to 10% each) of hornblende, biotite and quartz. Orthoclose and tourmaline are accompanied in few places and scheelite and minor amount of fluorite, are the ore minerals. On the basis of mineralogical constituents of the vein, vein structures, mode of occurrence of the vein and gradational contact between veins and amphibolite, the present writer conclude that the deposit was formed by segregation from the parent basic igneous rock of amphibolite. The main portions of the deposit were formed by intrusion of ore solution into already solidified amphibolite after being segregated in deeper horizone, whereas the minor portion by segregation of ore solution in situ.

  • The aim of this study is to estimate the field applicability of PBFM to replace in-site soil with pile backfill used to replace the existing cement paste. As results, the flowability, segregation and bleeding, and bond strength of PBFM was a good performance than that of the existing cement paste. But the skin friction of pile by Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) and compressive strength was slightly decreased than that of the existing cement paste. However, as pile backfill materials, and in terms of economics and environment, the applicability of PBFM is considered very effective.

  • Semisolid A356 slurries were prepared by electromagnetic stirring casting and by inoculation of Al-5Ti-B master alloy. As stirring time and addition of Al-5Ti-B are different, the grain size of the primary phase is different. Through the experiment of rheocast in a Buhler horizontal die casting machine, it was found that the finer the equiaxed primary dendrites, the smoother the die filling and better cast quality. Small equiaxed primary dendrite also results in less liquid segregation on the surface.

  • The authors conducted field experiments of frost heave to evaluate a method for reducing frost susceptibility using granulated used-tire mixture for 3 winters. Qualitative analyses for the evaluation of restraint effect of frost susceptibility by utilizing granulated used-tire soil mixture were conducted with the segregation potential concept and frost heave ratio. By mixing soil with granulated tire, the frost susceptibility was decreased drastically. From the result of the analyses, it was confirmed that granulated tire is an excellent material in controlling the frost susceptibility.

  • Controlled low strength material(CLSM), known as flowable fill is used sewer. This paper evaluates flowability, segregation, early strength and excavatability of CLSM made using standard soils such as SM, ML, CL, CH. Also, various mix proportions of CLSM containing kaolinite, red soil, Joomun Jin standard soil were developed and the mixing ratio optimized. It was considered as the flowability and early strength were severly affected by W/B, S/B, and early strength and flowability depend on standard soils which means the satisfaction conditions of CLSM were variety of standard soil conditions. Finally, not only optimal mixing proportions were deducted according to standard soil condition but confirmed effectiveness of bleeding and excavatability.

  • This paper discusses a series of experiments including material improvement in order to ensure quality of grouting for the post-tensioned structure. In presstressed concrete, grouting refers to the construction procedure of filling empty space of duct enclosing the prestress tendons using cementitious material, To date, adequate quality control of the grouting has not been established in Korea because the relationship between the grouting and durability of post-tensioned structure is not well-recognized. The Korean standard does not consider the important material characteristic, wick effect, which is caused by tendons in the ducts, and furthermore current standard testing method does not quantify reasonable material segregation. As a result, the grout material, which satisfies the current material standards, may well exhibit excessive bleeding of water or shrinkage during construction. In this study, international codes and standards related to grouting were surveyed. The mix proportions of the constituents and novel admixtures were suggested to meet equivalently with these standards. Performance of this enhanced grout was compared with common domestic grouts using the international standard testing method. A series of mock-up specimens considering geometry of PC beam was constructed and grout flow pattern was observed as the grout was injected. It was observed that the grouting performance was highly influenced by material properties and filling characteristic can be varied depending on geometry of ducts.

  • The compression behavior of semi-solid materials is studied from a viewpoint of yield criteria and analysis methods. To describe the behavior of materials in semi-solid state, several theories have been proposed by extending the concept of plasticity of porous compressible materials. In the present work, the upper-bound method and the finite element method are used to model the simple compression process using yield criteria of Kuhn and Doraivelu. Segregation between solid and liquid which cause defect of product is analysed for Sn-15%Pb and A356 alloys during deformation in semi-solid state. The comparison of analyses is made according to yield criteria and analysis methods. In addition, the analysis result for semi-solid dendritic Sn-15%Pb alloy is compared with the experimental result of Charreyron et al..

  • To improve the reliability of solder joints, a composite solder which consists of solder matrix and intermetallic reinforcements was manufactured by a new method. The cast ingot of Sn-6.9Cu-2.9Ag alloy had primary Cu6Sn5 intermetallics in the form of dendrites. After rolling the ingot, the intermetallic dendrites were crushed into fine particles and distributed uniformly throughout the solder matrix. As the rolled strips became thinner, the average size of the crushed particles reached a critical size which did not decrease any more by further rolling. The critical size was nearly the same as the average width of intermetallic dendrite trunk. The crushed intermetallic particles did not melt and remained in solid state during reflow soldering due to their high meltingterm-perature. The coarsening and gravitational segregation of the particles were observed during reflow soldering.
