  • This paper describes results for surface and bulk characterization of the most promising thin film solar cell material for high performance devices, (Ag,Cu) (In,Ga) Se2 (ACIGS). This material in particular exhibits a range of exotic behaviors. The surface and general materials science of the material also has direct implications for the operation of solar cells based upon it. Some of the techniques and results described will include scanning probe (AFM, STM, KPFM) measurements of epitaxial films of different surface orientations, photoelectron spectroscopy and inverse photoemission, Auger electron spectroscopy, and more. Bulk measurements are included as support for the surface measurements such as cathodoluminescence imaging around grain boundaries and showing surface recombination effects, and transmission electron microscopy to verify the surface growth behaviors to be equilibrium rather than kinetic phenomena. The results show that the polar close packed surface of CIGS is the lowest energy surface by far. This surface is expected to be reconstructed to eliminate the surface charge. However, the AgInSe2 compound has yielded excellent atomic-resolution images of the surface with no evidence of surface reconstruction. Similar imaging of CuInSe2 has proven more difficult and no atomic resolution images have been obtained, although current imaging tunneling spectroscopy images show electronic structure variations on the atomic scale. A discussion of the reasons why this may be the case is given. The surface composition and grain boundary compositions match the bulk chemistry exactly in as-grow films. However, the deposition of the heterojunction forming the device alters this chemistry, leading to a strongly n-type surface. This also directly explains unpinning of the Fermi level and the operation of the resulting devices when heterojunctions are formed with the CIGS. These results are linked to device performance through simulation of the characteristic operating behaviors of the cells using models developed in my laboratory.

  • Recently, quasimolecular dynamics has been successfully used to simulate the deformation characteristic of actual size material. In quasimolecular dynamics, which is an attempt to bridge the gab between atomistic and continuum simulations, molecules are aggregated into large units, called quasimolecules, to simulate the large scale material behavior. In this paper, a numerical simulation using quasimolecular dynamics has been performed to investigate the laminar composite material fracture and crack propagation behaviors in bending process of laminar composite material which is made of fictitious materials. The simulation of the bending of laminar composite material has clarified the effects of strength of material at outer surface upon the fracture behviors of the specimen.

  • Purposes: This study examined the relationship between risk behaviors and sexual knowledge, sexual attitudes, and sexual experiences of male high school students. Method: A cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted. Data were collected from 2 male high schools in metropolitan Gwangju. Five hundred forty-eight boys were enrolled in this study. Descriptive statistics, factor analysis, t-test or ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation were used for data analysis. Results: The mean sexual knowledge and sexual experience scores were relatively low, 0.60 out of 1 point, and 0.75 out of 4 points, respectively. Three attitude types of the students were identified: permissible, conservative and pleasure seeking attitude. The score of the permissible type was affected by the subjects' exposure to pornographic material. The score of the conservative type was affected by alcohol consumption and acquaintances with a heterosexual friend. The score of the pleasure seeking type was affected by their exposure to pornographic material, alcohol consumption, smoking, going to a video-room, and acquaintances with a heterosexual friend. There was a negative correlation between the permissible type and sexual knowledge, and a positive correlation between the conservative and pleasure seeking types and sexual experience. Conclusion: Male high school students who have been exposed to risk behaviors have a higher likelihood of indulging in sexual activity, and the pleasure seeking type appears to be related to sexual experience. An educational program may be needed to prevent risky behaviors and sexual experiences in male high school students considering their sexual attitude type.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine what factors affected patients who suffered from essential hypertension compliance with health behaviors, to help build a successful strategy to step up their compliance with health behaviors, and to seek effective ways to implement health education programs for patients with chronic disease. The subjects in this study were 60 people selected from among the patients who were diagnosed by physicians as having essential hypertension in S General Hospital in the city of P from April 10 through July 30, 2000, after health education was provided four times a month. The quasi- experimental design based on a control group pretest-posttest design was employed. The subjects were divided into three groups of 20 patients each: one was an experimental group to receive education in one-to-one interview, another was an experimental group to receive education as a group, and the third was a control group. The two experimental groups learned the same material through different methods, and the control group was given the same teaching materials and asked to comply with health behaviors on their own without instruction. After the three-week education was implemented in different ways, their compliance with health behaviors was measured. Collected data was analyzed by t-test, paired test, one-way analysis of variance, correlation analysis and regression analysis procedures. The findings of this study were as follows: 1. Concerning the effective type of health education, the group education produced the best results, followed by the one-to-one interviews and the sole use of print media. 2. Regarding the effect of compliance with health behaviors, the group- educated group got the highest score in compliance with health behaviors, but blood pressure lowered more significantly in the individual interview group. And the compliance with health behaviors had a significant negative correlational relationship with both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. 3. Parameter that had most significant correlational relationship with compliance with health behaviors was health locus of control, followed by self-efficacy and health perception. But there was no significant correlational relationship between compliance with health behaviors and knowledge of hypertension. 4. As a result of analyzing the impact of knowledge of hypertension, health locus of control, self-efficacy and health perception on compliance with health behaviors, self-efficacy was found to exercise most influence. Above-mentioned findings suggested that group education or one- to-one discussion would be more effective for health care for hypertension in koreans, as they could serve to have patients realize their own responsibility for health and to motivate their compliance with health behaviors, and there was a need to more positively utilize educational intervention for patients with chronic diseases, which could elevate not only compliance with health behaviors but self-efficacy.

  • The sealing performance of an elastomeric O-ring seal using NBR and FFKM has been analyzed for the contact stress behaviors that develop between the O-ring seal and the surfaces with which it comes into contact. The leakage of an O-ring seal will occur when the pressure differential across the seal just exceeds the initial (or static) peak contact stress. The contact stress behaviors that develop in compressed O-rings, in common case of restrained geometry(grooved), are investigated using the finite element method. The analysis includes material hyperelasticity and axisymmetry. The computed FEM results show that the contact stress behaviors are related to materials of NBR and FFKM and temperature of vaccum chamber.

  • The effect of the initial imperfections on the nonlinear behaviors and ultimate strength of the thin-walled members subjected to the axial loads, obtained by the finite element stability analysis, are examined. As the initial imperfections, the bucking mode shapes of the members are adopted. The buckling mode shapes of the thin-walled members are obtained by the transfer matrix method. In the finite element stability analysis, isoparametric degenerated shell element is used, and the geometrical and material nonlinearity are considered based on the Green Lagrange strain definition and the Prandtl-Reuss stress-strain relation following the von Mises yield criterion. The U-, box- and I-section members subjected to the axial loads are adopted for numerical examples, and the effects of the initial imperfections on the nonlinear behaviors and ultimate strength of the members are examined.

  • Polymer brush is a soft material unit tethered covalently on the surface of scaffolds. It can induce functional and structural modification of a substrate's properties. Such surface coating approach has attracted special attentions in the fields of stem cell biology, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine due to facile fabrication, usability of various polymers, extracellular matrix (ECM)-like structural features, and in vivo stability. Here, we summarized polymer brush-based grafting approaches comparing self-assembled monolayer (SAM)-based coating method, in addition to physico-chemical characterization techniques for surfaces such as wettability, stiffness/elasticity, roughness, and chemical composition that can affect cell adhesion, differentiation, and proliferation. We also reviewed recent advancements in cell biological applications of polymer brushes by focusing on stem cell differentiation and 3D supports/implants for tissue formation. Understanding cell behaviors on polymer brushes in the scale of nanometer length can contribute to systematic understandings of cellular responses at the interface of polymers and scaffolds and their simultaneous effects on cell behaviors for promising platform designs.

  • The size effects for adhesive and frictional characteristics were studied. The specimen was Mica and the AFM tips were SiO2. The radii of SiO2 tip were 280, 380, 930, and 2230 nm on which tribological tests had never been performed. It was found that the adhesive forces and the frictional coefficients increased non-linearly with tip radius. Compared with previous studies at nanoscale and microscale, the results showed behaviors bridging each previous result. It could be said that these results were clues to explain the material behaviors between nanoscale and microscale both in adhesion and friction.

  • The sealing performance of an elastomeric O-ring seal with a temperature gradient has been analyzed for the contact stress behaviors that develop between the O-ring seal and the housing surfaces with which it comes into contact in the dovetail groove. The leakage of an O-ring seal will occur when the pressure differential across the seal just exceeds the initial peak contact stress. The contact stress behaviors that develop in compressed O-rings, in common case of restrained geometry (grooved), are investigated using the finite element method. The FE analysis includes material hyperelasticity and axisymmetry The computed FEM results show that the contact stress behaviors are related to a compression rate and a temperature gradient between the vacuum chamber with a dovetail groove and the contacting plate with a cooling jacket.
