  • This paper presents a design and fabrication of Ku-band power amplifier using Gallium Nitride High Electron Mobility Transistor (GaN HEMT) die. In order to fabricate the low-cost Ku-band power amplifier, a Printed Circuit Board(PCB) was used for input/output matching circuits instead of manufacturing process to use an expensive substrate. The measured output power is 42.6 dBm, the drain efficiency is 37.7 % and the linear gain is 7.9 dB under pulse operation at the frequency of 14.8 GHz. Under the continuous wave(CW) test, the output power is 39.8 dBm, the drain efficiency is 24.1 % and the linear gain is 7.2 dB.

  • In this paper, compact linear dual polarized series-fed $1{\times}2$ linear and $2{\times}2$ planar arrays antennas for airborne SAR applications are proposed. The proposed antenna design consists of a square radiating patch that is placed on top of the substrate, a quarter wave transformer and $50-{\Omega}$ matched transformer. Matching between a radiating patch and the $50-{\Omega}$ microstrip line is accomplished through a direct coupled-feed technique with the help of an impedance inverter (${\lambda}/4$ impedance transformer) placed at both horizontal and vertical planes, in the case of the $2{\times}2$ planar array. The overall size for the prototype-1 and prototype-2 fabricated antennas are $1.9305{\times}0.9652{\times}0.05106{{\lambda}_0}^3$ and $1.9305{\times}1.9305{\times}0.05106{{\lambda}_0}^3$, respectively. The fabricated structure has been tested, and the experimental results are similar to the simulated ones. The CST MWS simulated and vector network analyzer measured reflection coefficient ($S_{11}$) results were compared, and they indicate that the proposed antenna prototype-1 yields the impedance bandwidth >140 MHz (9.56-9.72 GHz) defined by $S_{11}$<-10 dB with 1.43%, and $S_{21}$<-25 dB in the case of prototype-2 (9.58-9.74 GHz, $S_{11}$< -10 dB) >140 MHz for all the individual ports. The surface currents and the E- and H-field distributions were studied for a better understanding of the polarization mechanism. The measured results of the proposed dual polarized antenna were in accordance with the simulated analysis and showed good performance of the S-parameters and radiation patterns (co-pol and cross-pol), gain, efficiency, front-to-back ratio, half-power beam width) at the resonant frequency. With these features and its compact size, the proposed antenna will be suitable for X-band airborne synthetic aperture radar applications.

  • This study investigated whether dietary factors are more influential factor than other health behavior such as drinking, smoking and exercise on abnormal serum cholesterol level inspite of Korean dietary pattern differences compared to Europeans and Americans. A double case control study model has been used for the study design. One model consisted of high blood cholesterol cases and control. the other model consisted of low blood cholesterol cased and controls. 5.398 sedentary male workers who had taken medical examinations at a university hospital were used as the study subjects. Out of the study subjects, 36individuals with high blood cholesterol cases and 30 individuals with low blood cholesterol cases were selected. For the 66 individual control selection, the individual control selection, the individuals matching method was adopted. The food frequency method was used to collect the data for assessment of the dietary factors. A standardized questionnaire was used to investigate other health behavior. logistic regression analysis was employed to measure the relative importance between the factors considered. There were no statistically significant differences observed in nutrients consumption or other health behavior among the low, normal and high blood cholesterol groups, An overmatching effect had been suspected as the cause of those findings. However, the results of logistic regression analysis to identify the factors influencing high serum cholesterol showed that odd ratios of dietary factors such as tocopherol(3.0) and saturated fatty acid(1.6) were higher than I. I of smoking and 1.2 of drinking. Similar results were also observed incases of low serum cholesterol. The above findings imply that although the dietary pattern is quite different from that of Europeans and America, the dietary factor is still a significant factor for abnormal blood cholesterol in Koreans. Therefore, the dietary risk factor identified in high fat consumption populations are still relevant for the relatively healthy Korean as guideline for preventive health practices. • This paper introduces an energy harvesting system that generates energy by collecting multi-band RF signals using buck-boost DC-DC converter. In an environment where the resistance of load using the collected electric energy is constantly changing, a buck-boost DC-DC converter is used in which the input resistance of the DC-DC converter does not change even if the load resistance changes. Since the frequency band of the input RF signal varies, the rectifier is designed for each band so that multiple bands can be processed, and a matching circuit is added to each band in front of the rectifier. For a rectifier to collect very small RF signals, a circuit is designed so that a constant voltage is obtained according to a very small input signal by devising a method of continuously accumulating the voltages collected and generated in each band. It is confirmed that the output efficiency can reach up to 20% even for the RF signal having the input of -20 dBm.

  • This paper presents a power detector circuit which monitors the transmitting power for the application in CDMA cell phones. The proposed power detector are composed of coupler for coupling output power and detector fur monitoring output power. The designed coupler has low loss characteristic because it adopts the stripline structure which consists of two ground planes at both sides of signal plane. The design frequency is 824-849MHz which is the Tx band fur CDMA mobile terminal, and the coupling factor of the stripline coupler is -20dB. A schottky barrier diode is adopted for detector design because of its high speed operation with minimized loss. The required impedance matching is performed to improve the linearity and sensitivity of output voltage at relatively low detector input level where the nonlinear characteristic of diode exists. The package parasitics as well as intrinsic diode model are considered for simulation of the detector. The predicted performances agree well with the measured results.

  • This paper presents a compact and miniaturized power detector utilizing low temperature co-fired ceramics(LTCC) technology for the application in wireless handset system to monitor the transmitting power at the frequency of 824-849MHz. The proposed power detector is composed of detector diode, lumped components for matching network, and LTCC stripline coupler based on LTCC substrate technology. A 20dB LTCC stripline direction coupler is designed and implemented with many bending section in order to reduce the practically occupied area for miniaturization. A zero bias schottky diode is adopted for detector design because of its high speed operation with minimized loss. The measured performances of fabricated detector agree well with the predicted results with a good linearity within the effective input RF power range.

  • The Counterpropagation algorithm(CP) is a combination of Kohonen competition network as a hidden layer and the outstar structure of Grossberg as an output layer. CP has been used in many real applications for pattern matching, classification, data compression and statistical analysis since its learning speed is faster than other network models. However, due to the Kohonen layer's winner-takes-all strategy, it often causes instable learning and/or incorrect pattern classification when patterns are relatively diverse. Also, it is often criticized by the sensitivity of performance on the learning rate. In this paper, we propose an enhanced CP that has multiple Kohonen layers and dynamic controlling facility of learning rate using the frequency of winner neurons and the difference between input vector and the representative of winner neurons for stable learning and momentum learning for controlling weights of output links. A real world application experiment - pattern recognition from passport information - is designed for the performance evaluation of this enhanced CP and it shows that our proposed algorithm improves the conventional CP in learning and recognition performance.

  • A diode-pumped single-mode Nd:YV $O_4$ green laser was developed. Frequency doubling of the laser was achieved by using an intracavity KTP generated green beam (532 nm). By comparing the diode laser spectrum with absorption spectrum of the Nd:YV $O_4$ crystal, we found optimal operating temperature of the diode laser. From output power measured for various mirror curvatures and cavity lengths, we found the optimal matching of TE $M_{00}$ mode with the pump beam gives the best efficiency. When the pump power was 1.9 W, 80 ㎽ of TE $M_{00}$ mode green beam was obtained. We tried to get a single longitudinal mode lasing as the fluctuation of the laser power was caused by the shift of longitudinal modes and the beating between the modes. We tested the intracavity etalon method and birefringent filter method for single mode operation. The etalon method resulted in the best single mode output power of 60 ㎽. The power fluctuation of the single-mode laser was reduced to 1/10 of that of the multi-mode laser.

  • DC-DC buck converter is a critical building block in the power management integrated circuit (PMIC) architecture for the portable devices such as cellular phone, personal digital assistance (PDA) because of its power efficiency over a wide range of conversion ratio. To ensure a safe operation, avoid unexpected damages and enhance the reliability of the converter, fully-integrated protection circuits such as over voltage protection (OVP), under voltage lock out (UVLO), startup, and thermal shutdown (TSD) blocks are designed. In this paper, these three fully-integrated protection circuit blocks are proposed for use in the DC-DC buck converter. The buck converter with proposed protection blocks is operated with a switching frequency of 1 MHz in continuous conduction mode (CCM). In order to verify the proposed scheme, the buck converter has been designed using a 180 nm CMOS technology. The UVLO circuit is designed to track the input voltage and turns on/off the buck converter when the input voltage is higher/lower than 2.6 V, respectively. The OVP circuit blocks the buck converter's operation when the input voltage is over 3.3 V, thereby preventing the destruction of the devices inside the controller IC. The TSD circuit shuts down the converter's operation when the temperature is over $85^{\circ}C$. In order to verify the proposed scheme, these protection circuits were firstly verified through the simulation in SPICE. The proposed protection circuits were then fabricated and the measured results showed a good matching with the simulation results.
