  • Most galaxies are believed to evolve through mergers and accretions. In particular, minor mergers and gas accretion appear to play an important role in galaxy evolution in the present-day Universe. Tidally-disrupted debris from such processes remain as diffuse, low-surface brightness structures because the dynamical timescale in the outskirts is significantly longer than that in the central regions. Although these structures will give us useful insight into the mass assembly history of galaxies, it is difficult to detect them due to their faint surface brightness. In order to investigate the structural properties of outskirts in nearby galaxies, we conduct deep and wide-field imaging survey with KMTNet. We present our observing strategy and an optimal data reduction process to recover faint extended features in the images of KMTNet. Using the imaging data of NGC 1291 obtained from KMTNet, we find that a peak-to-peak sky gradient can be reduced less than 0.4-0.6% of the original sky level in the entire image. We also find that we can reach the surface brightness of ${\mu}_{(B,1{\sigma})}$ ~ 29.5, ${\mu}_{(R,1{\sigma})}$ ~ 28.5 mag $arcsec^{-2}$ in one-dimensional profile, that is mainly limited by the uncertainty in the sky determination. It indicates that deep imaging data of KMTNet is suitable to study the extended faint features of nearby galaxies, such as stellar halos, outer disks, and dwarf companions.

  • In this paper, we apply a mixed $H_2/H_{\infty}$ control to a generalized plant of inverted pendulum system represented by an LFR(Linear Fractional Representation). First, in order to obtain the generalized plant, the linear model of the inverted pendulum represented by an LFR(Linear fractional Representation) is derived. In LFR, we consider system uncertainties as three nonlinear components and a pendulum mass uncertainty. Augmenting the LFR model by adding weighting functions, we get a generalized plant. And then, we design a mixed $H_2/H_{\infty}$ controller for the generalized plant. In order to design the mixed $H_2/H_{\infty}$ controller, we use the LMI technique. To evaluate control performances and robust stability of the mixed $H_2/H_{\infty}$ controller designed, we compare it with the $H_{\infty}$ controller through the simulation and experiment. In the result, with the fewer feedback information, the mixed $H_2/H_{\infty}$ controller shows the better control performances and robust stability than the $H_{\infty}$ controller in the sense of pendulum angle.

  • Tracking control of systems with variable stiffness hysteresis using a gain-scheduled (GS) controller is developed in this paper. Variable stiffness hysteretic system is represented as quasi linear parameter dependent system with known bounds on parameters. Assuming that the parameters can be measured or estimated in real-time, a GS controller that ensures the performance and the stability of the closed-loop system over the entire range of parameter variation is designed. The proposed method is implemented on a spring-mass system which consists of a semi-active independently variable stiffness (SAIVS) device that exhibits hysteresis and precisely controllable stiffness change in real-time. The SAIVS system with variable stiffness hysteresis is represented as quasi linear parameter varying (LPV) system with two parameters: linear time-varying stiffness (parameter with slow variation rate) and stiffness of the friction-hysteresis (parameter with high variation rate). The proposed LPV-GS controller can accommodate both slow and fast varying parameter, which was not possible with the controllers proposed in the prior studies. Effectiveness of the proposed controller is demonstrated by comparing the results with a fixed robust $\mathcal{H}_{\infty}$ controller that assumes the parameter variation as an uncertainty. Superior performance of the LPV-GS over the robust $\mathcal{H}_{\infty}$ controller is demonstrated for varying stiffness hysteresis of SAIVS device and for different ranges of tracking displacements. The LPV-GS controller is capable of adapting to any parameter changes whereas the $\mathcal{H}_{\infty}$ controller is effective only when the system parameters are in the vicinity of the nominal plant parameters for which the controller is designed. The robust $\mathcal{H}_{\infty}$ controller becomes unstable under large parameter variations but the LPV-GS will ensure stability and guarantee the desired closed-loop performance.

  • With improving computer penormance and advancing simulation techniques, a growing number of softwares are being developed for visualization of investigation results in geotechnical problems. It is a very important subject for geological site investigation to understand or predict if there would be any hazardous geological conclition that might cause any increase of construction costs or an extension of construction period. A 3-D (three-climensional) visualization technique may be one of the powerful tools to overcome an uncertainty problem of geologica] site investigatior. The paper describes an overview of a newly developed geotechnical 3-D interpretation system for the purpose of applying the 3-D visualization technique, GIS (geographic information system) and D/B (database) to tunnel design and construction. VR (virtual reality) and 3-D visualization techniques are applied in order to develope the 3-D model of characteristics and structures of rock mass. D/B system for all the materials related to site investigation and tunnel construction is developed using GIS technique. This system is very useful for civil engineers to make a plan of tunnel construction at the design stage and also during construction with the advantage of improving the economy and safety of tunnels.

  • The state of in situ stress is an important factor in considering the suitability of a site as a geological repository for nuclear waste. In this study, three-dimensional distinct numerical analysis was conducted to investigate the effect of deformation zones on the state of stress in the Oskarshamn area, which is one of two candidate sites in Sweden. A discontinuum numerical model was constructed by explicitly representing the numerous deformation zones identified from site investigation and far-field tectonic stress was applied in the constructed model. The numerical model successfully captured the variation of measured stress often observed in the rock mass containing large-scale fractures, which shows that numerical analysis can be an effective tool in improving the understanding of the state of stresses. Discrepancies between measured and modelled stress are attributed to the inconsistent quality of measured stress, uncertainty in geological geometry. and input data for fractures.

  • Rock joints have an extremely important role in analyzing the mechanical stability and hydraulic characteristics of rock mass structures. Most rock joint parameters are generally indicated as a distribution by statistical techniques. In this research, calculation technique of Joint Center Volume (JCV) is analyzed, which is required for estimating the size distribution having the largest uncertainty among the joint parameters, then a new technique is proposed which is applicable regardless of the shape of survey window. The existing theoretical JCV calculation technique can be applied only to the plane window, and the complete enumeration techniques show the limitations in joint trace type and analysis time. This research aims to overcome the limitations in survey window shape and joint trace type through calculating JCV by using Monte Carlo simulation. The applicability of proposed technique is validated through the estimation results at non-planar survey windows such as curved surface and tunnel surface.

  • In the entertainment industry which has great uncertainty, it is essential to predict public preference first. Thanks to various mass media channels such as cable TV and internet-based streaming services, the reality audition program has been getting big attention every day and it is being used as a new window to new entertainers' debut. This phenomenon means that it is changing from a closed selection process to an open selection process, which delegates selection rights to the public. This is characterized by the popularity of the public being reflected in the selection process. Therefore, this study aims to implement a machine learning model which predicts the winner of , which has recently been popular in South Korea. By doing so, this study is to extend the research method in the cultural industry and to suggest practical implications. We collected the data of winners from the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd seasons of the Produce 101 and implemented the predictive model through the machine learning method with the accumulated data. We tried to develop the best predictive model that can predict winners of by using four machine learning methods such as Random Forest, Decision Tree, Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Neural Network. This study found that the audience voting and the amount of internet news articles on each participant were the main variables for predicting the winner and extended the discussion by analyzing the precision of prediction.

  • This paper focuses on the development and assessment of the expected damage for the rocking response of rigid anchored blocks, with irregular geometry and non-uniform mass distribution, considering the site conditions and the seismicity of Mexico City. The non-linear behavior of the restrainers is incorporated to evaluate the pure tension and tension-shear failure mechanisms. A probabilistic framework is performed covering a wide range of block sizes, slenderness ratios and eccentricities using physics-based ground motion simulation. In order to incorporate the uncertainties related to the propagation of far-field earthquakes with a significant contribution to the seismic hazard at study sites, it was simulated a set of scenarios using a stochastic summation methods of small-earthquakes records, considered as Empirical Green's Function (EGFs). As Engineering Demand Parameter (EDP), the absolute value of the maximum block rotation normalized by the body slenderness, as a function of the peak ground acceleration (PGA) is adopted. The results show that anchorages are more efficient for blocks with slenderness ratio between two and three, while slenderness above four provide a better stability when they are not restrained. Besides, there is a range of peak intensities where anchored blocks located in soft soils are less vulnerable with respect to those located in firm soils. The procedure used in here allows to take decisions about risk, reliability and resilience assessment of different types of contents, and it is easily adaptable to other seismic environments.

  • A trace amount of boron in steel significantly influences its mechanical and physical properties. A prompt gamma ray activation analysis (PGAA) method is used to measure boron in low alloy steel samples of KRISS 101-01-C21~C26. NIST SRMs of 362, 364, 1761 and 1767 serve as the control standards to validate the measurement method. The measured values of the NIST SRMs are consistent with their certified values within the expected uncertainties, except for that of NIST SRM 362. Experimental uncertainties are evaluated according to the guidelines given by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The expanded uncertainties are calculated with a coverage factor of 2, at approximately 95% confidence level. The calculated relative expanded uncertainties of boron mass fractions are between 3% and 7% at the mg/kg level. The results are compared with the results measured by the solvent extraction-inductively coupled optical emission spectrometry (ICP/OES) method.
