From a chemist's perspective, Scarabaeidae is one of the most exciting group of insects to work on the isolation, identification, and synthesis of sex pheromones because-as opposed to Lepidoptera, which by and large utilizes straight chain alcohols, aldehydes, and acetates-the pheromonal chemistry of scarab beetles is remarkably diverse. While species in the subfamily Rutelinae utilize pheromone constituents, which are presumably fatty acid derivatives, the more primitive species in the subfamily Melolonthinae use phenolic, amino acid derivative, and terpenoid compounds. Here, I discuss the recent advances we have accomplished in the identification of scarab sex pheromones with especial emphasis on their chemical diversity. Also, I discuss the potential role of these sex pheromones in insect pest management. Field tests revealed that, in contrast to what has been frequently observed in the Lepidoptera, the higher the dosage of sex pheromone loaded in the traps the greater the capture of scarab beetles. These data suggest that mass trapping is more likely to be useful for scarab pest management than mating distruption.

The ceramic filters were developed using technology similar to that of quartz crystal and electro- mechanical filter. However, the key to this development involved the theoretical analysis of vibration modes and material improvements of piezoelectric ceramics. The primary application of ceramic filters has been for consumer-market use. Accordingly, a major emphasis has involved mass production technology, leading to low-priced devices. A typical ceramic filter includes monolithic resonators and capacitors packaged in unique configurations. Nakazawa developed a double-mode resonator as two acoustically coupled single resonators. And he developed 10.7MHz crystal filters using multi-energy trapping mode of thickness shear vibration. He succeeded in realizing a two-pole band pass filter response without external inductance by splitting a dot electrode to creak coupled symmetric and anti- symmetric vibration modes. Accordingly, the simulation for ceramic (inter were important. So that, this paper were investigated the pass frequency of filter on the electrode length and thickness of ceramic.
Trichloromethylphosphonyl dichloride was prepared by the aluminium chloride method. We synthesized several heterocyclic compounds containing phosphorus atom by the stepwise esterification of trichloromethylphosphonyl dichloride with ethylene glycol, 2-mercaptoethanol, ethylene diamine, and 2-aminoethanol and the resulting heterocyclic compounds are 2-trichloromethyl-1,3,2-dioxa-, 2-trichloromethyl-1,3,2-thioxa-, 2-trichloromethyl-1,3,2-diaza-, 2-trichloromethyl-1,3,2-diaza-, and 2-trichloromethyl-1,3,2-oxazaphospholane-2-oxide. The best results were obtained in the solution of triethylamine as hydrochloric acid trapping agent. The structure of five-membered heterocyclic phosphonates were characterized by their IR, NMR, and elementary analysis and the mass spectra of the compounds were analyzed.

Occurrence ecology and possibility of mass trapping of Popillia quadriguttata, one of the most serious turfgrass insect pest in domestic golf courses was investigated using pheromone traps in Gimpo and Jinhae. Peak period of adult occurrence of P. quadriguttata was late June and early July in Gimpo Seaside Country Club from 2006 to 2008. It was early and middle July in Youngwon Country Club in 2006. The first catched day of P. quadriguttata adult was 20 June, while the last day was 10 September in Gimpo Seaside Country Club, 2006. Mean catched number of P. quadriguttata adult in Japanese beetle pheromone trap per day in peak period of occurrence were 18.2, 25.7, 29.0, and 15.7 at 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 respectively. Mean catched number of P. quadriguttata adult in Japanese beetle pheromone trap were more in fairways or roughs than tees or greens. Possibility of control of scarab beetle using pheromone trap with pesticide treatment was investigated against oriental beetle, Blitopertha orientalis in Dongrae Benest Golf Club. Mean number of dead oriental beetle adult were more higher(2.9 folds) in fenitrothion EC treatment than fenitrothion EC treatment after set oriental beetle pheromone trap.

The fragmentation patterns and ion-molecule reactions of two alkyn alcohols, 2-propyn-1-ol (HC≡$CCH_2$OH) and 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol (HC≡CC($CH_3)_2$OH), were investigated using Fourier transform mass spectrometry (FTMS). The most abundant fragment ions formed from the molecular ions were [M-H]$^+$ for 2-propyn-1-ol and [M-$CH_3]^+$ for 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol. The dehydrated ion, [M-$H_2O]^+$ was formed only from 2-propyn-1-ol in which $\alpha$ -hydrogen atoms were available for $\alpha,\;\alpha$ -elimination reaction. The protonated molecules were dissociated into [M+H-$H_2O]^+$ and [M+H-$C_2H_2]^+$ through dehydration and deacetylenylation processes. The formations of [M+H-$H_2O]^+$ and [M+H-$C_2H_2]^+$ from 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol were more favorable than those from 2-propyn-1-ol due to stabilization by two methyl groups at $\alpha$ -carbon. Ion-neutral complexes formed at long ion trapping time gave dehydrated and/or deacetylenylated ion products by further dissociation.

The smoke from a burning cigarette is classified as mainstream, which is the smoke inhaled by the smoker during a puff, and sidestream, which is defined by ISO 10185 as all smoke which leaves a cigarette during the smoking process other than from the butt end. Most of the sidestream smoke is generated during static burn, that is, in between puffs. The amount of sidestream smoke generated by a cigarette depends on the cigarette construction, tobacco blend, and properties of the cigarette paper, The main paper properties affecting sidestream smoke generation are: porosity, basis weight, type and amount of filler, type and amount of burn additive.Sidestream smoke is composed of a visible phase (small liquid droplets) and an invisible phase (gaseous molecules). This paper focuses on the visible portion of the sidestream smoke. Optical methods, which are based on the relationship between light scattering and density of the rising plume of smoke, have been used successfully by the industry. However, the present trend is to use gravimetric methods where the particulate matter is captured on a Cambridge(R) filter pad and weighed. The gaseous portion of the sidestream smoke, which does not contribute to the visible sidestream smoke, passes through the Cambridge filter pad.Sidestream smoke reduction is achieved by modifying certain mass transport processes occurring in a smoldering cigarette. There are four main pathways for reducing sidestream smoke: A) less tobacco burned, B) slower rate of tobacco combustion, C) more efficient trapping of smoke by the cigarette paper, and D) more complete combustion of tobacco. This paper discusses how the physical properties of paper and cigarette construction affect sidestream smoke reduction via the above four mechanisms.
Variability in growth and sporulation of five isolates of Arthrobotrys dactyloides was studied on five agar, 6 bran and 5 grain media. Potato dextrose agar (PDA) supported maximum growth of isolate A, C and E, while growth of isolate Band D was significantly lower on this medium. On Czapek's agar and yeast glucose agar media the differentiation in the isolates in relation to growth was poor than PDA. The other two media showed much poorer differentiation. On Czapek's agar medium, sporulation was recorded in isolate B only, whereas other isolates showed rare sporulation. Among the bran media, pea bran agar medium supported maximum growth of all the isolates except isolate B. Gram and rice bran agar media were next best. However, the growth of isolate B on the gram bran agar medium was more or less equal as other isolates. On pigeon pea bran agar medium, isolate E failed to grow while other isolates recorded poor growth. On lentil bran agar medium, only isolate Band D recorded little growth, whereas other isolates failed to grow. All the isolates recorded good sporulation on bran agar media except pigeon pea and lentil bran agar media. The grain agar media supported moderate to very good growth of all the isolates. In general isolate B remained slow growing on these media except gram grain and sorghum grain agar media on which growth of this isolate was comparable to other isolates. Sporulation in general, was good on all the grain agar media. Among different substrates screened, barley grain and pea bran were found superior to others for mass culture of isolate A of A. dactyloides.
An objective method for measuring rancidity in soybean oil was developed based on the volatile contents obtained by headspace gas chromatographic analysis. Apparatus for headspace volatile cold trapping-thermal desorption was described, designed to collect and analyze volatiles of soybean oil. Samples of commercially processed soybean oil were stored under controlled condition and then evaluated for flavor by a eight member trained panel and for volatile contents by headspace gas chromatographic analysis. Twenty-three GC peaks were identified on the basis of relative retention time of reference compounds and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The volatile compounds identified were autoxidation products of principal unsaturated fatty acids of soybean oil. The simple linear regressions of flavor score with the pentanal or hexanal contents in aged soybean oil gave correlation coefficient of 0.990 and 0.994. respectively. Pentanal and hexanal contents could be used as a potentially useful index for predicting flavor scores of soybean oil.
