  • The fatty acid composition and small molecular metabolites in breast and leg meat of Yanjin blackbone chickens (YBC) and Piao chickens (PC) were detected by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-quadrupole static field orbital trap mass spectrometry. Thirty-two fatty acids were detected, and the total fatty acid content of PC was significantly higher than that of YBC (p<0.05). Oleic acid, linoleic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, and arachidonic acid were the main fatty acids in the two chicken varieties, and the composition of fatty acids in the two varieties were mainly unsaturated fatty acids, being more than 61.10% of the total fatty acids. Meanwhile, 12 and 16 compounds were screened out from chicken legs and chicken breasts of YBC and PC, respectively, which had important contributions to the differences between groups.

  • This report aims to describe a case of tumor-like lymphoplasmacytic conjunctivitis in a 7-year-old spayed-female Pomeranian. On complete ophthalmic examination, a mass with papillary projections was noted on the bulbar surface of the right third eyelid. Debulking of the mass was performed while preserving as much of the third eyelid as possible. On the histopathological examination, the mass was diagnosed as lymphoplasmacytic conjunctivitis with mild epithelial hyperplasia. Although a slight regrowth of the mass was noted 3 weeks after surgery, intralesional injection of triamcinolone acetonide led to its disappearance. There was no further recurrence after 5 months.

  • Massive binary stars lose mass by two mechanisms: jet-driven mass loss during periods of active mass transfer and by wind-driven mass loss. Beta Lyrae is an eclipsing, semi-detached binary whose state of active mass transfer provides a unique opportunity to study how the evolution of binary systems is affected by jet-driven mass loss. Roche lobe overflow from the primary star feeds the thick accretion disk which almost completely obscures the mass-gaining star. A hot spot predicted to be on the edge of the accretion disk may be the source of beta Lyrae's bipolar outflows. I present results from spectropolarimetric data taken with the University of Wisconsin's Half-Wave Spectropolarimeter and the Flower and Cook Observatory's photoelastic modulating polarimeter instrument which have implications for our current understanding of the system's disk geometry. Using broadband polarimetric analysis, I derive new information about the structure of the disk and the presence and location of a hot spot. These results place constraints on the geometrical distribution of material in beta Lyrae and can help quantify the amount of mass lost from massive interacting binary systems during phases of mass transfer and jet-driven mass loss.

  • The levels of salivary cortisol and cortisone in Korean adults were measured for the first time using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The salivary cortisol and cortisone were separated within 10 min. The regression coefficients (r) of the calibration curves were greater than 0.999 for the two steroids. The limits of quantitation (LOQ) were 0.2 ng/ml for cortisol and 1 ng/ml for cortisone. The intra-day precisions of the assay were <3.9% and 8.6% for cortisol and cortisone respectively, and the inter-day precisions were <1.9% and 4.3% for cortisol and cortisone, respectively. The salivary cortisone concentrations were approximately 4-9 times higher than those of salivary cortisol during the daytime. Diurnal rhythms, during which the cortisol and cortisone concentrations were higher in the morning than in the afternoon, were also observed. The present assay may be useful for the diagnosis of several adrenal dysfunctions in clinical biochemistry.

  • The prevalence of diabetes has increased to 8% of population. Unlike type 2 diabetes in the western countries, Korean diabetic patients are nonobese and have low serum insulin levels. As the increased prevalence of diabetes and the peculiar characteristics may be related to dietary fat contents, we determined their effects on insulin resistance, insulin secretion and pancreatic $\beta-cell$ mass in 90% pancreatectomized (Px) diabetic rats in the present study. The rats were provided with low fat diet (LF, 10 energy% fat), moderate fat diet (MF, 25 energy% fat) and high fat diet (HF, 40 energy% fat) for 6 months. HF increased body weight and epidydimal fat pads parallel with increased food intake compared to LF and MF. Fasting serum glucose and insulin levels and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance were higher in HF, compared to LF and MF, indicating that HF increased insulin resistance. Rats fed LF and MF diets reduced insulin resistance, but only rats fed MF improved pancreatic $\beta-cell$ mass and insulin secretion capacity, measured by hyperglycemic clamp and in situ pancreatic perfusion. LF had low insulin secretion capacity and pancreatic $\beta-cell$ mass, indicating the increased possibility of diabetic prevalence and progression. MF increased $\beta-cell$ mass by stimulating $\beta-cell$ proliferation and neogenesis and reducing $\beta-cell$ apoptosis. In conclusion, MF is effective for the prevention of prevalence and progression of diabetes.

  • Methanol extract of Sarcodon aspratus Berk. (S. Ito) was analyzed by thi layer chromatography, gas chromatography and mass spectrophotometer. Nine fractions from primary methanol extract were observed by TLC. Six fractions were observed by the second TLC analysis of the second and the third fractions. 27,28-digydrolanosterol({TEX}$C_{30}H_{52}${/TEX}O), ergost-7-en-3-ol({TEX}$C_{28}H_{48}${/TEX}O) were identified from two fractions of the second TLC analysis by mass spectrophotometer. The molecular weights of 27,28-dihydrolanosterol and ergost-7-en-3-ol were 413 and 400 respectively.

  • Applications of superconducting technology in transportation is more straightforward than others, such as magnetic levitation (maglev) trains. A maglev train is of high speed & low power-consumption, environmental friendly and safe, accompanied by some drawbacks. This article will introduce the application of superconducting technology in the urban mass transport system, and the bottleneck of this application.

  • Ion-molecule reactions of acetylene and mixed acetylene-ammonia cluster ions are studied using an electron impact time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The present results clearly demonstrate that $(C_2H_2)_n^+$ cluster ion distribution represents a distinct magic number of n=3. The mass spectroscopic evidence for the enhanced structural stabilities of $[C_6H_4{\cdot}(NH_3)_m]^+$ (m=0-8) ions is also found along with the detection of mixed cluster $[(C_2H_2)_n{\cdot}(NH_3)_m]^+$ ions, which gives insight into the feasible structure of solvated ions. This is rationalized on the basis of the structural stability for acetylene clusters and the dissociation dynamics of the complex ion under the presence of solvent molecules.

  • In this paper, we studied about the effect of the open crack and a tip mass on the dynamic behavior of a cantilever pipe conveying fluid with a moving mass. The equation of motion is derived by using Lagrange's equation and analyzed by numerical method. The cantilever pipe is modelled by the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The crack section is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged pipe segments. The influences of the crack, the moving mass, the tip mass and its moment of inertia, the velocity of fluid, and the coupling of these factors on the vibration mode, the frequency, and the tip-displacement of the cantilever pipe are analytically clarified.
