  • In this paper, the cyclic soil behavior model. which can accommodate the cyclic hardening, was developed by modifying the original parallel IWAN model. In order to consider the irrecoverable plastic strain of soil. the cyclic threshold strain, above which the backbone curve deviates from the original curve, was defined and the accumulated strain was determined by summation of the strains above the cyclic threshold in the stress-strain curve with applying Masing rule on unloading and reloading curves. The isotropic hardening elements are attached to the original parallel IWAN model and the slip stresses in the isotropic hardening elements are shown to increase according to the hardening functions. The hardening functions have a single parameter to account for the cyclic hardening and are defined by the symmetric limit cyclic loading test in forms of accumulated shear strain. The model development procedures are included in this paper and the verifications of developed model are discussed in the companion paper.

  • The effect of partially restrained(PR) connections and the uncertainties in them on the reliability of steel frames subjected to seismic loading is addressed. A stochastic finite element method(SFEM) is proposed combining the concepts of the response surface method(RSM), the finite element method(FEM), the first-order reliability method (FORM), and the iterative linear interpolation scheme. The behavior of PR connections is captured using moment-relative rotation curves, and is represented by the four-parameter Richard model. For seismic excitation, the loading, unloading, and reloading behavior at PR connections is modeled using moment-relative rotation curves and the Masing rule. The seismic loading is applied in the time domain for realistic representation. The reliability of steel frames in the presence of PR connections is calculated considering all major sources of nonlinearity. The algorithm is clarified with the help of an example.

  • Nonlinear soil behavior before failure under dynamic loading is often implemented in a numerical analysis code by a mathematical fitting function model with Masing's rule. However, the model may show different behavior with an experimental results obtained from laboratory test in damping ratio corresponding secant shear modulus for a certain shear strain rage. The difference may come from an unique soil characteristics which is unable to implement by using the existing mathematical fitting model. As of now, several fitting models have been suggested to overcome the difference between model and real soil behavior but consequence of the difference in dynamic analysis is not reviewed yet. In this paper, the effect of the difference on site response was examined through nonlinear response history analysis. The analysis was verified and calibrated with well defined dynamic geotechnical centrifuge test. Site response analyses were performed with three mathematical fitting function models and compared with the centrifuge test results in prototype scale. The errors on peak ground acceleration between analysis and experiment getting increased as increasing the intensity of the input motion. In practical point of view, the analysis results of accuracy with the fitting model is not significant in low to mid input motion intensity.
