This paper investigates the performance of EPCglobal Generation-2(Gen-2) radio frequency identification(RFID) protocol under reader-to-reader interfering environments. We establish a modified discrete-time Markov chain(DTMC) model for the Gen-2 and accordingly obtain quantitative results of query success rate(QSR) and tag identification speed (TIS). Extensive simulations validate our theoretical analysis and demonstrate that the number of tags over 100 has little impact on the performance. TIS linearly decreases by 10 tags/sec/reader as the number of interfering readers increases. Our model for Gen-2 protocol is also useful to study the performance of other RFID protocols.

The range-free localization using connectivity information has problems of mobile tracking. This paper proposes two Bayesian filter-based mobile tracking algorithms considering a propagation scenario. Kalman and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) particle filters are applied according to linearity of two measurement models. Measurement models of the Kalman and MCMC particle filter-based algorithms respectively are defined as connectivity between mobiles, information fusion of connectivity information and received signal strength (RSS) from neighbors within one-hop. To perform the accurate simulation, we consider a real indoor map of shopping mall and degree of radio irregularity (DOI) model. According to obstacles between mobiles, we assume two types of DOIs. We show the superiority of the proposed algorithm over existing range-free algorithms through MATLAB simulations.

Using directional antennas in wireless Ad hoc networks has many superiorities, including reducing interference, extending transmission range, and increasing space division multiplexing. However, directional transmission introduces two problems: deafness and directional hidden terminals problems. We observe that these problems result in saturation throughput disparity among the competing flows in directional CSMA/CA based Ad hoc networks and bring challenges for modeling the saturation throughput of the flows. In this article, we concentrate on how to model and analyze the saturation throughput disparity of different flows in directional CSMA/CA based Ad hoc networks. We first divide the collisions occurring in the transmission process into directional instantaneous collisions and directional persistent collisions. Then we propose a four-dimensional Markov chain to analyze the transmission state for a specific node. Our model has three different kinds of processes, namely back-off process, transmission process and freezing process. Each process contains a certain amount of continuous time slots which is defined as the basic time unit of the directional CSMA/CA protocols and the time length of each slot is fixed. We characterize the collision probabilities of the node by the one-step transition probability matrix in our Markov chain model. Accordingly, we can finally deduce the saturation throughput for each directional data stream and evaluate saturation throughput disparity for a given network topology. Finally, we verify the accuracy of our model by comparing the deviation of analytical results and simulation results.
Climate change mainly due to the increase of green house gases cause different patterns of water cycle within the basin. However, it is common that current planning and management practices do not consider the effect of the climate change. So, this study evaluated the effect of climate change on the water circulation within the watershed. This study used several GCM simulations for the double $CO_2$condition for the generation of temperature and rainfall series using the Markov chain. Daily runoff series for 100 years were generated using a rainfall-runoff model. As results. annual temperature increase by +3.2 ∼+4.6$^{\circ}C$, annual precipitation change -7 ∼ +8 %, annual runoff change -14 ∼ +7 %, and potential evapotranspiration amount change +3 ∼+4 % for the change of 1 $^{\circ}C$ are found to be expected depending on GCM simulations. Even though the simulation results are very dependent on the GCM predictions considered, overall variability of runoff is expected to become higher than the current state.
The IEEE 802.11 wireless standard uses the carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) as its MAC protocol (during the distributed coordination function period). This protocol is an adaptation of the CSMA/CD of the wired networks. CSMA/CA mechanism cannot guarantee quality of service (QoS) required by the application because orits random access method. In this study, we propose a new MAC protocol that considers different types of traffic (e.g., voice and data) and for each traffic type different priority levels are assigned. To improve the QoS of IEEE 802.11 MAC protocols over a multi-channel CSMA/CA, we have developed a new admission policy for both voice and data traffics. This protocol can be performed in direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) or frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS). For voice traffic we reserve a channel, while for data traffic the access is random using a CSMA/CA mechanism, and in this case a selective reject and push-out mechanism is added to meet the quality of service required by data traffic. To study the performance of the proposed protocol and to show the benefits of our design, a mathematical model is built based on Markov chains. The system could be represented by a Markov chain which is difficult to solve as the state-space is too large. This is due to the resource management and user mobility. Thus, we propose to build an aggregated Markov chain with a smaller state-space that allows performance measures to be computed easily. We have used stochastic comparisons of Markov chains to prove that the proposed access protocol (with selective reject and push-out mechanisms) gives less loss rates of high priority connections (data and voices) than the traditional one (without admission policy and selective reject and push-out mechanisms). We give numerical results to confirm mathematical proofs.
This paper presents a procedure of evaluation of reservoir capacity for additional water storage for dam rehabilitation. One of the techniques on the extension of rainfall has been developed, and the daily stream flows were simulated by the NWS-PC long-term rainfall-runoff model with the input of the extended daily rainfall which was stochastically generated by the nonhomogeneous markov chain model. We peformed a reliability analysis to Guisan dam about the optimal capacity of dam rehabilitation by using performance criteria that Hashimoto et al. (1982) presented. We estimated that the most suitable water level is approximately 155EL.M. suggested that this method can use supplemental methods to estimate optimum dam scale.
This study applied a probabilistic-based hidden Markov model (HMM) to better characterize drought patterns. In addition, a copula-based bivariate drought frequency analysis was employed to further investigate return periods of the current drought condition in year 2015. The obtained results revealed that western Kangwon area was generally more vulnerable to drought risk than eastern Kangwon area using the 40-year data. Imjin-river watershed including Cheorwon area was the most vulnerable area in terms of severe drought events. Four stations in Han-river watershed showed a joint return period exceeding 1,000 years associated with the drought duration and severity in 2014-2015. Especially, current drought status in Northern Han-river and Imjin-river watershed is most severe drought exceeding 100-year return period.
With the recent machine learning paradigm of using nonparametric Bayesian statistics and statistical inference based on random sampling, the Dirichlet distribution finds many uses in a variety of graphical models. It is a multivariate generalization of the gamma distribution and is defined on a continuous (K-1)-simplex. This paper presents a sampling method for a Dirichlet distribution for the problem of dividing an integer X into a sequence of K integers which sum to X. The target samples in our problem are all positive integer vectors when multiplied by a given X. They must be sampled from the correspondingly gridded simplex. In this paper we develop a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) proposal distribution for the neighborhood grid points on the simplex and then present the complete algorithm based on the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm. The proposed algorithm can be used for the Markov model, HMM, and Semi-Markov model for accurate state-duration modeling. It can also be used for the Gamma-Dirichlet HMM to model q the global-local duration distributions.
In this study, a nonhomogeneous markov model which is able to simulate hourly rainfall series is developed for estimating reliable hydrologic variables. The proposed approach is applied to simulate hourly rainfall series in Korea. The simulated rainfall is used to estimate the design rainfall and flood in the watershed, and compared to observations in terms of reproducing underlying distributions of the data to assure model's validation. The model shows that the simulated rainfall series reproduce a similar statistical attribute with observations, and expecially maximum value is gradually increased as number of simulation increase. Therefore, with the proposed approach, the non-homogeneous markov model can be used to estimate variables for the purpose of design of hydraulic structures and analyze uncertainties associated with rainfall input in the hydrologic models.
Six land use data for a total of twenty five years were reviewed from 1975 to 2000 by dividing the period by 5-year unit; the land use variation was schematized; the watershed hydrological parameters were extracted by the representative rainfall years(maximum, average, driest year) by analyzing the recent thirty years'(from 1980 to 2010) climate data of the study region with SWAT model to investigate the effect of the precipitation change on the characteristics of groundwater recharge. In addition Markov Chain model was used to estimate the future land use; the predicted land use was applied to study the effect of the land use variation on the characteristics of groundwater recharge. For the research of this, long-term characteristics of groundwater recharge were estimated for the study region; the obtained results can be described as follows. The study region was divided into typical three area using SWAT model; yearly land use conditions were applied to the meteorological data of 1975 to 2010 and analyzed, producing the average rate of groundwater recharge of 30% for the applied period. This number is way lower than that of the earlier studies on the groundwater recharge for Jeju Island, which is 40-50%. Thirty percent (30%) is low considering the geological characteristics of Jeju, water-permeable vesicular strata, the reason of which must be the type of development is non-permeable paving.
