  • Numerous novel marine natural products have been discovered and isolated from varied marine organisms by the diligent bio-prospectors over the past decades. An assessment of the current status of commercial development of these natural compounds indicates only minimal commercialization due to the lack of sustainable supply. To bridge the gaps between discovery and commercialization of these tantalizing bioactive compounds, marine bioprocess engineering is the key for its success. The problems, challenges and opportunities for marine bioprocess engineers are examined for the timely transformation of the discovery into commercial reality. Marine bioprocess engineers will find it the most rewarding practice of their expertise in diving into the ocean.

  • In this study, we aimed to determine the seasonal distribution and biomass of fish in Samcheok marine ranching area (MRA) of Republic of Korea using the scientific echosounder. Fish trap and gillnets were used to identify fish species in the survey area, and dB-difference method was used to estimation the spatio-temporal distribution and density of fish. The results showed that the dominant species in Samcheok marine ranching area were Chelidonichthys spinosus, Sebastes inermis, Hexagrammos otakii and Tribolodon hakonensis. The spatio-temporal distribution of fish showed that fish had a relatively higher distribution at night than during the day. In addition, the density of fish by season was highest at night in July at 34.22 g/m2 and lowest in April at 0.42 g/m2.

  • The continuous energy Monte Carlo neutron transport code, MC21, was coupled to the CTF subchannel thermal-hydraulics code using a combination of Consortium for Advanced Simulation of Light Water Reactors (CASL) tools and in-house Python scripts. An MC21/CTF solution for VERA Core Physics Benchmark Progression Problem 6 demonstrated good agreement with MC21/COBRA-IE and VERA solutions. The MC21/CTF solution for VERA Core Physics Benchmark Progression Problem 7, Watts Bar Unit 1 at beginning of cycle hot full power equilibrium xenon conditions, is the first published coupled Monte Carlo neutronics/subchannel T-H solution for this problem. MC21/CTF predicted a critical boron concentration of 854.5 ppm, yielding a critical eigenvalue of $0.99994{\pm}6.8E-6$ (95% confidence interval). Excellent agreement with a VERA solution of Problem 7 was also demonstrated for integral and local power and temperature parameters.

  • Comparative study was carried out for an acoustic iterative inverse method to estimate bubble size distributions in water. Conventional bubble sizing methods consider only sound attenuation for sizing. Choi and Yoon [IEEE, 26(1), 125-130 (2001)] reported an acoustic iterative inverse method, which extracts the sound speed component from the measured sound attenuation. It can more accurately estimate the bubble size distributions in water than do the conventional methods. The estimation results of acoustic iterative inverse method were compared with other experimental data. The experimental data show good agreement with the estimation from the acoustic iterative inverse method. This iterative technique can be utilized for bubble sizing in the ocean.

  • This study analysed the documents of Sea Area Utilization Consultation of JongChun and ApHae located in West Coast of Korea and NaJeong located in East Coast of Korea in order to find out problems of site surveys and numerical simulations for coastal erosion projects of ocean physics, and suggested the improvement way to go. Current especially like wave-induced current is the one of the important external forces to handle coastal erosion but underestimated in the west coast. In case of east coast the various tests including wave-induced current were conducted but less efficient to find out the reasons of coastal erosion. The stiffness structure to protect coastal line like beach made the secondary erosion by using them without sufficient analysis for the erosion. In order to consult a Sea Area Utilization Consultation those are needed to review the scenarios for external forces such as wave and tidal currents, the site surveys for external forces, the net sediment analysis for years, the long periods of monitoring, and the guide line and revision of the rule for coastal erosion.

  • Plasma technology has long been regarded as a key essential tool in many industrial and technological sectors. However, the advancement of plasma technology in marine applications has not been fully realized yet. Herein, we present a short overview on the recent trends in utilization of plasma technology for air-pollution treatment in marine diesel exhaust. Four non-thermal plasma system, including electron beam dry scrubber (EBDS), dielectric barrier discharge (DBD), electron beam-microwave (EB-MW) plasma hybrid system, and plasma-catalytic hybrid system, are described with emphasis on their efficiency in removals of $NO_x$ and $SO_x$ gases. Non-thermal plasma has the great potential to be an efficient and environmentally compatible technique in simultaneous removals of $NO_x$ and $SO_x$ gases from the exhaust of marine diesel engine in the future.

  • Marine casualties originated from fishing vessels occupied about 71.2% of the whole marine casualties in Korea from 2008 to 2014, which has not changed much for a long time. Therefore, a pragmatic counterplan to decrease in casualties in fishing vessel is indispensable for reduction of marine casualties in Korea. Since the casualties occurred by fishing vessels may incline to a specific type of casualties according to the difference in the operating type; in this paper, 11 fishing types which occurred casualties frequently in numbers and occupied ratio were selected. Since the most frequent occurring casualties in fishing vessels were from collisions and fire explosion in statistics from KMST (2008~2014), the study focused on them. The collision is given a great deal of weight in all the casualties mostly due to the negligence of duty regardless of the job types. Gill netter, trap fishing boat, jig boat, multiple fishing boat and stow netter have their own specific causes of casualties in collision according to the operating types. The cause of fire explosion was mainly due to poor inspection and maintenance the electric cord. For this reason, it may be necessary for an operator to make strict precaution on the other vessels under way systematically, keep the regulation for preventing collisions, and for an engineer on watch to make a check the electricity periodically to reduce the fire explosion.

  • The inherent instability of metabolite production in plant cell culture-based bioprocessing is a major problem hindering its commercialization. To understand the extent and causes of this instability, this study was aimed at understanding the variability of anthocyanin accumulation during long-term subcultures, as well as within subculture batches, in Vitis vinifera cell cultures. Therefore, four cell line suspensions of Vitis vinifera L. var. Gamay Freaux, A, B, C and D, originated from the same callus by cell-aggregate cloning, were established with starting anthocyanin contents of $2.73\;\pm\;0.15,\;1.45\;\pm\;0.04,\;0.7\;\pm\;0.024\;and\;0.27\;\pm\;0.04$CV (Color Value)/g-FCW (fresh cell weight), respectively. During weekly subculturing of 33 batches over 8 months, the anthocyanin biosynthetic capacity was gradually lost at various rates, for all four cell lines, regardless of the significant difference in the starting anthocyanin content. Contrary to this general trend, a significant fluctuation in the anthocyanin content was observed, but with an irregular cyclic pattern. The variabilities in the anthocyanin content between the subcultures for the 33 batches, as represented by the variation coefficient (VC), were 58, 57, 54, and $84\%$ for V. vinifera cell lines A, B, C and D, respectively. Within one subculture, the VCs from 12 replicate flasks for each of 12 independent subcultures were averaged, and found to be $9.7\%$, ranging from 4 to $17\%$. High- and low-producing cell lines, VV05 and VV06, with 1.8-fold differences in their basal anthocyanin contents, exhibited different inducibilities to L-phenylalanine feeding, methyl jasmonate and light irradiation. The low-producing cell line showed greater potential in enhanced the anthocyanin production.
