A chemical investigation of the marine-derived fungi Aspergillus versicolor led to the isolation of a new aromatic polyketide (1), The structure was elucidated by spectroscopic analysis, and its radical-scavenging activity, reducing power, and inhibitory activity to lipid oxidation were investigated. Those activities of compound 1 were compared with standard antioxidants such as butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), tertiarybutylhydroquinone (TBHQ), and ascorbic acid ($V_C$). Compound 1 showed antioxidant activity comparable to that of BHA, and siginificantly higher than that of BHT.

An investigation of the MeOH soluble fractions of marine sponge Psammocinia sp. (Order: Dictyoceratida) led to the isolation of a new epidioxy sterol (1) and four known sterols (2-5). Their planar structures were defined by analyses of the spectroscopic data. The 27-nor-24-methylcholestan type side chain with an epidioxy nucleus (1) was unprecedented. Compounds 1-5 were isolated from a sponge Psammocinia sp. for the first time.
A new glycerol ether has been isolated from a marine sponge Stelletta sp. By bioactivity-guided fractionation. The structure was established on the basis of NMR and MS analyses. The compound was evaluated for cytotoxicity against a small panel of five human tumor cell lines and exhibited significant cytotoxicity.
The ethanolic extracts of two shallow water sponge species collected from the Aegean Sea afforded thirteen terpenoids in total, two of which were determined to be new. The structure elucidation of the terpenoids was carried out by spectroscopic techniques and comparison with related authentic compounds. The terpenoids have also been assayed for antibacterial activity. This is the first report about the metabolites isolated from the marine sponges of the Aegean Sea in Turkey.

Two specimens of sponges collected from Red Sea, Egypt, were investigated for their contents of secondary metabolites. The crude extracts of the sponges were tested for their anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. The toxic effects of the extracts of the two marine sponges were studied. $LD_{50}$ determination revealed that the investigated extracts of 'Igernella and Ircinia spp' were 4.69 and 134.7 mg/l00 g b.wt., respectively, when injected intraperitoneally in mice. The toxic signs were recorded within the first 24 hrs after injection. Also the two marine sponges extracts showed significant anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.
Two new thiodiketopiperazines (TDKPs), designated graphiumins I (1) and J (2), were isolated from the culture broth of the marine-derived fungus Graphium sp. OPMF00224 by solvent extraction, silica gel column chromatography, and HPLC. Their absolute structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analyses (1D and 2D NMR data, ROESY correlations, and CD data) and chemical methods. They were found to be structurally rare TDKPs with a phenylalanine-derived indolin substructure. Compounds 1 and 2 inhibited yellow pigment production by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) with $IC_{50}$ values of 63.5 and $76.5{\mu}g/ml$, respectively, without inhibiting its growth, even at $250{\mu}g/ml$.
Streptochlorin is a small molecule isolated from marine Streptomyces sp. that is known to have antiangiogenic and anticancer properties. In this study, we examined the effects of this compound on reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and the association of these effects with apoptotic tumor cell death, using a human hepatocarcinoma Hep3B cell line. The results of this study demonstrated that streptochlorin mediates ROS production, and that this mediation is followed by a decrease in the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP, ${\Delta}{\Psi}_m$), activation of caspase-3, and downregulation of antiapoptotic Bcl-2 protein. The quenching of ROS generation by N-acetyl-L-cysteine administration, a scavenger of ROS, reversed the streptochlorin-induced apoptosis effects via inhibition of ROS production, MMP collapse, and the subsequent activation of caspase-3. These observations clearly indicate that ROS are involved in the early molecular events in the streptochlorin-induced apoptotic pathway. Taken together, our data imply that streptochlorin-induced ROS is a key mediator of MMP collapse, which leads to the caspase-3 activation, culminating in apoptosis.
The effects of various natural antioxidant sources on oxidation of olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) and fish diet during storage was determined. Juvenile fish were distributed among 18 flow-through tanks (40 fish per tank). Six experimental diets were prepared in triplicate: control (CT), antitox (AT), green tea extract (GE), fig extract (FE), Haeroc product (HP) and by-product of green tea (BG). The experimental diets were stored at two temperatures: room temperature ($26.8^{\circ}C$) for 14 days and frozen ($-30^{\circ}C$) for 16 weeks. Thirty fish were sampled from each tank at the end of the 8-week feeding trial. Whole bodies of fish were homogenized and stored in a home freezer ($-9.6^{\circ}C$) for 24 weeks. Acid values (AVs) and peroxide values (POVs) of the diets and frozen fish during storage were monitored. AVs of the experimental diets tended to increase with the storage period except for that of the HP diet at room temperature. POVs from FE, CT, and BG diets peaked at day 7 and then decreased through the remainder of the experiment. AVs of the experimental diets and fish increased with time at $-30^{\circ}C$ and $-9.6^{\circ}C$. Results of this study show that by-products of green tea and Haeroc product seem to have potential as antioxidants in fish feed to inhibit oxidation of both the feed and fish during storage.
The aim of this study was to measure and compare polyphenol content, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activity of six halophytes (Limonium tetragonum, Suaeda glauca, Suaeda japonica, Salicornia europaea, Triglochin maritimum, and Sonchus brachyotus). Depending on the total polyphenol content, the plants were categorized into two groups: (1) a high total polyphenol content group that included L. tetragonum, S. brachyotus, and S. europaea, and, (2) a low total polyphenol content group consisting of S. glauca, T. maritima, and S. japonica. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using DPPH and hydroxyl radical scavenging assays, and by measuring ROS. Anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated by measuring NO and $PGE_2$. L. tetragonum and S. brachyotus, that have high polyphenol content, also showed strong antioxidant activity. In addition, L. tetragonum, S. brachyotus, and S. europaea showed good anti-inflammatory activity. Consequently, the total polyphenol content was thought to be related to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Therefore, S. brachyotus and L. tetragonum are good candidates for use in pharmaceuticals and functional foods.
This study aims to determine problems of the damage investigation system of aquaculture products resulting from natural disaster and to deduce improvement plans for such problems. The main problems revealed from this study were as follows: 1) detailed damage investigation is carried out only by one particular organization, 2) for aquaculture insurance subscribers another detailed damage investigation is conducted to reveal the causes of natural disaster by a joint investigator team formed according to a different legislation with a different purpose, 3) damage investigation is usually suffered from lack of labor, budget and time due to the restriction of natural damage to a certain period of season leading to the absence of quick reaction capability for irresistible natural disasters, and 4) there are no specified procedures and protocols for deciphering causes of a natural demage. The improvement plans to find solutions for such problems are as follows: 1) for the investigation, the object, method and role of the investigation organization should be clarified by improving the present legislation, 2) investigation methods for determining the demage causes should be systematized by making a manual to minimize disputes, and 3) supports for the investigation organization should be institutionalized to guarantee sufficient budget and manpower. Under the present circumstance with continuous natural damages, smooth procedures of damage compensation would lead to the management stability of aquaculture farms.
