  • This study determined that the four corrosive characters of carbon steel in the marine splash zone (MSZ) in China's four sea areas. It has a range and a corrosion peak value. The rust in the MSZ plays the role of "depolarizer" in the cathodic process of corrosion. The growth law of the rust layer in MSZ has a character of "annual ring". In addition the reasons causing serious corrosion of carbon steel in the marine splash zone has been discussed in this paper.

  • An 8-week feeding trial was conducted to study the effect of dietary supplementation of a biofloc powder on growth performance and non-specific immune response of Litopenaeus vannamei. Seven experimental diets were prepared with supplementation of graded levels of dried biofloc powder by 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0, 6.0, and 8.0% (designated as Con, BF0.5, BF1, BF2, BF4, BF6, and BF8, respectively). Triplicate groups of shrimp ($1.01{\pm}0.01g$) were hand-fed with one of the diets four times a day. At the end of the feeding trial, significantly (P<0.05) higher growth performance and feed utilization were obtained in BF4 groups compared to those fed the Con diet. The innate immunity of shrimp was improved by the dietary supplementation of biofloc. Dietary inclusion of biofloc at the level of 4.0% significantly increased disease resistance of shrimp against Vibrio harveyi. The results indicate that biofloc might be used as a dietary supplement for growth performance, innate immunity and disease resistance of Pacific white shrimp.

  • Recently, the occurrence of harmful algae blooms from the Chattonella group has been increasing and expanding in the southern and western seas of Korea. We investigated the relationship between growth kinetics and nutrients in the harmful algae Chattonella marina and Chattonella ovata of the South Sea, Korea. As a result; high concentrations of ammonium ($30\;{\mu}M$ and above) was not effective to the growth of C. ovata, while C. marina displayed good growth at concentration of $100\;{\mu}M$. The half-saturation constant ($K_s$) of C. marina for ammonium ($2.51\;{\mu}M$), nitrate ($5.36\;{\mu}M$) and phosphate ($0.75\;{\mu}M$) was higher than C. ovata (1.85, 4.01, and $0.61\;{\mu}M$, respectively). This indicates that C. ovata can achieve higher cell densities than C. marina under lower nutrient conditions. These $K_s$ values were comparatively higher than those of diatoms and other flagellates previously reported. Therefore, our results indicate that the growth of C. marina and C. ovata is less adapted to lower nutrient environments than other competition species, such as Skeletonema costatum and Cochlodinium polykrikoides.

  • Prolactin (PRL) plays an important role in freshwater (FW) osmoregulation by preventing the loss of ions and the uptake of water in fish. Growth hormone (GH) promotes acclimation to seawater (SW) in several teleosts. We acclimated rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss weighting $68.2{\pm}16.6$, $138.3{\pm}24$, and $287.5{\pm}42.1$ g in separate experiments to SW under slow-acclimation (SSW) or acute-acclimation (ASW) conditions, and then examined the PRL and GH mRNA levels using the real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The PRL mRNA levels in all three experimental groups decreased significantly with both the SSW and ASW treatments, as compared to a control group kept in FW for 30 days. The GH mRNA levels increased with ASW in the largest fish, whereas the levels in the other groups did not change significantly. The mortality rate of the largest fish was lower than for the other groups, whereas the growth rate among the three experimental groups did not differ significantly. The growth rate of the ASW group was highest for the smallest fish. These results suggest that SW acclimation is associated with the gene expression levels of PRL and GH in relatively large rainbow trout. In addition, the fish mortality and growth rate on FW-SW transfer seem to be related to body weight, and the SW acclimation method may be applied to the hatcheries industry.

  • Somatostatin (SS) and growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) are primary factors regulating growth hormone (GH) secretion in the pituitary. To date, it remains unknown how this rhythm is controlled endogenously, although there must be coordination of circadian manners. Melatonin was the main regulator in biological rhythms, and its secretion has fluctuation by photic information. But relationship between melatonin and growth-related genes (ghrh and ss) is unclear. We investigated circadian rhythms of melatonin secretion, ghrh and ss expressions, and correlation between melatonin with growth-related genes in tiger puffer Takifugu rubripes. The melatonin secretion showed nocturnal rhythms under light and dark (LD) conditions. In constant light (LL) condition, melatonin secretion has similar patterns with LD conditions. ss1 mRNA was high during scotophase under LD conditions. But ss1 rhythms disappeared in LL conditions. Ghrh appeared opposite expression compared with melatonin levels or ss1 expression under LD and LL. In the results of the melatonin injection, ghrh and ss1 showed no significant expression compared with control groups. These results suggested that melatonin and growth-related genes have daily or circadian rhythms in the tiger puffer. Further, we need to know mechanisms of each ss and ghrh gene regulation.

  • Predictive models in food microbiology are used for predicting microbial growth or death rates using mathematical and statistical tools considering the intrinsic and extrinsic factors of food. This study developed predictive growth models for Bacillus cereus on dried laver Pyropia pseudolinearis stored at different temperatures (5, 10, 15, 20, and 25℃). Primary models developed for specific growth rate (SGR), lag time (LT), and maximum population density (MPD) indicated a good fit (R2≥0.98) with the Gompertz equation. The SGR values were 0.03, 0.08, and 0.12, and the LT values were 12.64, 4.01, and 2.17 h, at the storage temperatures of 15, 20, and 25℃, respectively. Secondary models for the same parameters were determined via nonlinear regression as follows: SGR=0.0228-0.0069*T1+0.0005*T12; LT=113.0685-9.6256*T1+0.2079*T12; MPD=1.6630+0.4284*T1-0.0080*T12 (where T1 is the storage temperature). The appropriateness of the secondary models was validated using statistical indices, such as mean squared error (MSE<0.01), bias factor (0.99≤Bf≤1.07), and accuracy factor (1.01≤Af≤1.14). External validation was performed at three random temperatures, and the results were consistent with each other. Thus, these models may be useful for predicting the growth of B. cereus on dried laver.

  • We examined the relative growth of Microstomus achne during early life stages of laboratory-reared larvae and juveniles. Turning points in the relative growth of preanal length and upper jaw length against total length occurred during the settlement period (11.12-19.91 mm in total length). However, turning points in the relative growth of head length and eye diameter, as compared to total length, occurred during metamorphosis (17.57-22.47 mm in total length). Our results suggest that Microstomus achne concentrates its energy on the feeding apparatus (jaw) and digestive organs (intestine) rather than sensory or neural organs (eye, head) during early larval stage growth.

  • Eye growth and lens diameter of brown croaker Miichthys miiuy were positively allometric between hatching and 180 days post-hatch (d.p.h.). Eye growth in relation to head length and head height was nearly isometric. Eyes were formed completely at 14 d.p.h. At this age, the eye has a crystalline lens, an optic nerve fiber layer, a ganglion cell layer, an inner plexiform layer, an inner nuclear layer, an outer plexiform layer, an outer nuclear layer, an outer limiting membrane, and a pigment epithelium. The essential demands that must be met by the retina in this species pertain to light sensitivity and spatial resolution.

  • Early-stage lung cancer is the deadliest form of the disease. In this study, we investigated the anticancer activity of 5-bromoprotocatechualdehyde (BPCA) extracted from the seaweed Polysiphonia morrowii Harvey (P. morrowii) in lung cancer H460 cells. We extracted P. morrowii powder thrice with 80% aqueous methanol and separated the extract using high-performance liquid chromatography. We then tested BPCA's effects on cell viability, apoptosis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and protein expression Our results showed that BPCA inhibited tumor cell growth and ROS production and induced apoptosis through mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and AKT signaling pathways in lung cancer cells. When BPCA was combined with hydrogen peroxide, ROS production and apoptosis increased even further due to the regulation of AKT signaling and JNK-MAPKs pathways. These findings suggest that BPCA induces lung-cancer-cell death through ROS-mediated phosphorylation in AKT/MAPK signaling. This could lead to the development of new and effective treatments for early-stage lung cancer.
