PHYTOPLANKTON BLOOMING AND OCEANIC CONDITIONS IN THE SEAS AROUND THE SPRATLY ISLANDS

  • The oceanic currents in the South China Sea (SCS) are strongly influenced by monsoon winds. A review on the SCS currents has indicated that previous studies have pointed out an anticyclonic circulation in the area between the southern Vietnam coast and the Spratly Islands. However, its detail is not understood because of less information of in situ observations. The physical-biological interaction is quite new research area, which has been established and promoted by means of the ocean color remote sensing. Temporal/spatial variability of the phytoplankton activities are well captured by ocean color (OC) -derived Chlorophyll-a images. Combining the OC-Chl-a and the other high-resolution satellite data (e.g., SST images), the biological aspects of oceanographic variation is well described. The blooming phenomena in the area between the southern Vietnam coast and the Spratly islands are further investigated. Change in the wind-system related to the El Nino generates upwelling/SST-cooling in the sea south of the Spratly Islands through the air-sea-land interaction was studied. The seasonal upwelling is also associated with the harmful algal bloom (HAB) off two side of Indochina Peninsula have investigated. The seasonal variation of SCS phytoplankton blooming and related oceanic conditions in Vietnam coast was observed. Ocean color satellite data has effective contribute to study the oceanic condition and phytoplankton blooming in South China Sea.

3차원 수치모델상에서 태풍통과시 '우측쏠림현상' (Variations of 'Rightward Bias' with Typhoon Using an Ideal 3D Primitive Equation Numerical Model)

  • An ideal 3D primitive equation model is implemented to investigate upper ocean response to typhoons, focusing on rightward bias (RWB) which means an appearance of an intensified sea surface cooling to the right side of the typhoon track. The model has 26-stratified levels and a flat bottom (1000 m), covering a rectangular domain of about 3,060 km×3,300 km with four open boundaries. The sea water is forced by an atmospheric pressure and a gradient wind of the typhoon. The model well reproduces the RWB in previous observations and theoretical analyses. For the fast moving typhoon (FMT) (-8m/sec), the model shows that in the mixed layer (ML), the RWB in the SST noticeably appears clearly illustrating the coupling between inertial motion and wind stress, but in the subsurface layer (-100m), the RWB does not emerge since a cyclonic current field (CCF) caused by wind stress curl is primarily dominant. For the slowly moving typhoon (SMT) (-3m/sec), however, the RWB does not emerge because the coupling is weakened and the CCF is rather predominant even in the ML. In the model, we conclude that the RWB noticeably emerges in the FMT but does not emerge in the SMT related to predominance of CCF.

  • One-dimensional numerical model is implemented to investigate temperature variations in the mixed layer depth (MLD) with the passage of typhoons. In the model, we assume a non-divergent, infinite ocean and consider wind effects only, excluding isostatic effects (inverse barometric effects) and upwelling with vertical movement of the water column. Numerical experiments investigate the effects of typhoon tracks on temperature variations, including their dependence on vertical resolutions in the MLD and these results are compared with those in a three-dimensional primitive equation model (POM). The model reproduces features of the observed temperature variations in the MLD fairly well, and implies that wind effects, rather than isostatic effects, play a predominant role in temporal and spatial temperature variations in the MLD. After the passage of typhoons, however, the model does not reproduce well the temperature variations observed in the MLD, because a limitation of the model is its inability to reproduce events such as cyclonic eddy formation (Hong et al., 2011; Masuda and Hong, 2011). The model also shows well the so called 'rightward bias' (Price, 1981) of sea surface cooling which is the most predominant in the right hand side of typhoon's track.

수중용접한 국산 SM41A-2강판의 편진반복 인장하중하의 피로강도특성에 관한 연구 (Study on tension-tension fatigue strength properties of underwater welded joints of SM41A-2 Plate-to-Plate)

  • Nowadays, the high development of industrial technique demands the optimal design of marine structures to be welded under the water, because the underwater welding of the ship hull and marine structures can decrease manpower and cost of production. However there is not available at present any report on fatigue behavior about underwater welded joints. In this paper under tention- tension repeated fatigue stress with frequency of 10 cycles per second by local controlled system, the fatigue strength properties of underwater welded joints of SM41A-2 Plate-to-Plate of 10 mm thickness were experimentally examined. The results obtained were as follows : 1) The fatigue strength of underwater welded joints of SM41A-2 was peaked at the heat input of about 1, 400 joule/mm(180 A, 36 V), while, at the heat input of more than about 1, 100 joule/mm (160 A, 33 V) that of the underwater welds at the higher than cycle of life rather than the lower cycle was higher than that of the base metal but lower than that of the atmosphere welds on account of both cooling and notch effects. 2) The fatigue limit of underwater welds increased with an increase of heat input resulting in a peak of that at the heat input of about 1, 400 joule/mm and then decreased gradually. 3) The fatigue strength at N cycles was peaked between the heat input of about 1, 400 and 1, 700 joule/mm where the strain was rapidly increased. 4) It was confirmed that the optimal zone of heat input condition for obtaining the underwater welds fatigue strength higher than that of the base metal exists, and if out of this zone, the fatigue strength of the underwater welds was lower than that of the base metal because of lack weld penetration, inclusion of slag, voids, etc. 5) By the fatigue test, the underwater welds fractured brittly without visual deformation, so the strain was remarkably less than of the atmosphere welds. 6) The fatigue life factor was peaked at the heat input of about 1, 600 joule/mm (200 A, 36 V) at which the mean strain is a little higher than that of the base metal but quite lower than those of the atmosphere welds, resulting in good underwater welds because both fatigue strength and ductility of the underwater welds are higher than those of the base metal at such heat input.

공조용 열교환기 증발관에서의 서리 발생에 관한 메커니즘의 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on Frost Generation Mechanism from Evaporator Tube in Air Conditioning System)

  • 이 실험의 목적은 튜브형 증발관에서 입구 공기 속도, 온도와 상대 습도에 따른 서리층 생성의 비교 검토에 있다. 입구 공기 속도와 온도는 각각 $0.3^m/_s,\;0.6^m/_s,\;0.9^m/_s,\;15^{\circ}C,\;20^{\circ}C,\;25^{\circ}C$로 하였고, 상대 습도는 $70\%\~90\%$로 하였다. 그리고 일반적인 공조기용 열교환기에서의 서리발생 현상을 파악하기 위하여 냉각튜브의 온도를 $-15^{\circ}C$로 일정하게 유지하였다. 그 결과 공급공기의 상대습도, 유속 및 온도가 증가할수록 서리 생성량이 증가함을 알 수 있었다.

해수면 난류수 유동방향 탐지를 위한 지구통계학적 분석기법 적용 (Application of Geostatistical Analysis Method to Detect the Direction of Sea Surface Warm Flows)

  • 최근 울진원자력 발전소에 대량의 해파리가 유입되어 냉각용수 공급을 위한 취수구를 막고 발전장애를 일으키는데, 이에 대한 사전 방지 대책 중 하나로 해양생물 대량유입의 감시 및 예보의 필요성이 제기되고 있다. 자체 이동 능력이 약한 보름달 물해파리와 같은 해양생물체에 대해서는 해수유동이 중요한 유입 요소로 작용하며, 울진주변해역에서 표층 해류방향이 북서향일 때에는 대마난류를 타고 올라온 해파리가 발전소 쪽으로 이동하여 피해를 주게 된다. 난류수의 유동방향 탐지를 위해 울진해역 $25km{\times}25km$ 공간범위를 설정하여 NOAA 해수면온도 관측자료를 수집하였다. 통계적 분석을 위해 수온자료는 GIS point 데이터로 만들고 ArcGIS의 geostatistical analyst를 사용하였으며, 수온 point 데이터에 대해 방향성 반베리오그램(directional semivariogram) 계산과 이방성(anisotropy)으로 해수면 난류수 유동방향을 탐지하였다. 이러한 실험적 결과는 발전소 취수구에 해양생물 대량유입을 감시하는 요소기술로 해파리유입 조기경보시스템 개발에 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

연소 배출가스 중 SO2 농도에 따른 응축성먼지 변화에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Change of Condensable Particulate Matter by the SO2 Concentration among Combustion Gases)

  • Particulate matter (PM) emitted from fossil fuel-combustion facilities can be classified as either filterable or condensable PM. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defined condensable PM as material that is in the phase of vapor at the stack temperature of the sampling location which condenses, reacts upon cooling and dilution in the ambient air to form solid or liquid in a few second after the discharge from the stack. Condensable PM passed through the filter media and it is typically ignored. But condensable PM was defined as a component of primary PM. This study investigates the change of condensable PM according to the variation in the sulfur dioxide of combustion gas. Domestic oil boilers were used as the source of emission ($SO_2$) and the level of $SO_2$ concentration (0, 50, 80, and 120 ppm) was adjusted by diluting general light oil and marine gas oil (MGO) that contains sulfur less than 0.5%. Condensable PM was measured as 2.72, 6.10, 8.38, and $13.34mg/m^3$ when $SO_2$ concentration in combustion gas were 0, 50, 80, and 120 ppm respectively. The condensable PM tended to increase as the concentration of $SO_2$ increased. Some of the gaseous air pollutants emitted from the stack should be considered precursors of condensable PM. The gas phase pollutants which converted into condensable PM should reduced for condensable PM control.

WELDING-INDUCED BUCKLING INSTABILITIES IN THIN PLATES

  • Welding-induced buckling distortion is one of the most problematic concerns in both design and fabrication of welded thin-plate structures. This paper deals with experimental and numerical results of the welding-induced longitudinal and/or buckling distortion occurring in welding of 6mm-thick AH36 high strength steel plates. Effects of the heat input and the plate size on the distortion were experimentally evaluated for square plates. Bead-on-plate welding was performed with the submerged arc welding process along the middle line of plate specimens. Experimental results showed that the longitudinal distortion made a single curvature in the plate, and the distortion magnitude along the weld centerline was proportional to the heat input and the plate size. The experimental results were used to examine the validity of the numerical simulation procedure for welding-induced distortion where the longitudinal distortion mode and magnitude were numerically quantified. Three-dimensional, large deformation, welding simulations were performed for selected weld models. Numerical results of the distortion mode and magnitude were in a good agreement with experimental ones. Depending on the presence of halting the distortion growth during the cooling cycle of welding, the condition discriminating buckling distortion from longitudinal distortion was established. Eigenvalue analyses were performed to check the buckling instability of tested plates with different sizes subjected to different heat inputs. The perturbation load pattern for the analysis was extracted from longitudinal inherent strain distributions. Critical buckling curve from the eigenvalue analyses revealed that the buckling instability is manifested when plate size or heat input increases.

  • 본 연구에서는 액체용 이젝터의 성능을 결정하는 여러가지 제약인자중 특히 레이놀즈수 변화에 따른 구동노즐의 면적비 및 목부길이가 액체용 이제터성능에 미치 는 영향을 체계적인 실험을 통하여 연구함으로써 기 개발된 CAD용 전산프로그램의 타 당성을 보다 세밀히 검토하고 이에 보완을 가하는데 연구의 목적이 있다.

함정용 다기능 AESA 레이더 시스템을 위한 고전압·고효율 DC-DC 전원모듈 개발 (Development of High Voltage, High Efficiency DC-DC Power Module for Modern Shipboard Multi-Function AESA Radar Systems)

  • For conventional AESA radars, DC-DC power modules using 300 Vdc have low efficiency, high volume, heavy weight, and high price, which have problems in modularity with T/R module groups. In this paper, to improve these problems, we propose a distributed DC-DC power module with high-voltage 800 Vdc and high-efficiency Step-down Converter. In particular, power requirements for modern and future marine weapons systems and sensors are rapidly evolving into high-energy and high-voltage power systems. The power distribution of the next generation Navy AESA radar antenna is under development with 1000 Vdc. In this paper, the proposed highvoltage, high-efficiency DC-DC power modules increase space(size), weight, power and cooling(SWaP-C) margins, reduce integration costs/risk, and reduce maintenance costs. Reduced system weight and higher reliability are achieved in navy and ground AESA systems. In addition, the proposed architecture will be easier to scale with larger shipboard radars and applicable to other platforms.
