  • A conceptual design of marine environmental information system(MEIS) for vessels running in the ocean was carried out. MEIS consists of a remote acquisition system of raw environmental data, a physical and numerical processing system of acquired raw data, and a supporting satellite communication system for data transfer. The efficiency of a remote acquisition system depends on the amount of acquired data and its real-time accessibility, while the efficiency of a data processing system is governed by the flexibility and accuracy of data analysis tools.

  • A virtual vessel traffic control system is introduced to contribute to prevent a marine accident such as collision and stranding from happening. Existing VTS has its limit. The virtual vessel traffic control system consists of both data acquisition by satellite remote sensing and a simulation of traffic environment stress based on the satellite data, remotely sensed data And it could be used to provide timely and detailed information about the marine safety, including the location, speed and direction of ships, and help us operate vessels safely and efficiently. If environmental stress values are simulated for the ship information derived from satellite data, proper actions can be taken to prevent accidents. Since optical sensor has a high spatial resolution, JERS satellite data are used to track ships and extract their information. We present an algorithm of automatic identification of ship size and velocity. It lastly is shown that based on ship information extracted from JERS data, a qualitative evaluation method of environmental stress is introduced.

  • A marine environmental information system (MEIS) useful for optimal route planning of ships running in the ocean was developed. Utilizing the simulated marine environmental data produced by the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts based on global environmental data observed by satellites, the real-time forecast and long-term statistics of marine environments around planned and probable ship routes are provided. The MEIS consists of a land-based data acquisition and analysis system(MEIS-Center) and a onboard information display system(MEIS-Ship) for graphic description of marine information and optimal route planning of ships. Also, it uses of satellite communication system for data transfer. The marine environmental components of winds, waves, air pressures and storms are provided, in which winds are described by speed and direction and waves are expressed in terms of height, direction and period for both of wind waves and swells. The real-time information is characterized by 0.5° resolution, 10 day forecast in 6 hour interval and daily update. The statistic information of monthly average and maximum value expected for a return period is featured by 1.5° resolution and based on 15 year database. The MEIS-Ship include an editing tool for route simulation and the forecasting and statistic information on planned routes can be displayed in graph or table. The MEIS enables for navigators to design an optimal navigational route that minimizes probable risk and operational cost.

  • Microplastics have arisen as a worldwide environmental concern, becoming ubiquitous in all marine compartments, and various researches on monitoring marine microplastics are being actively conducted worldwide. Recently, application of a remote detection technology that enables large-scale real-time observation to marine plastic monitoring has been conducted overseas. However, in South Korea, there is little information linking remote detection to marine microplastics and some field studies have demonstrated remote detection of medium- and large-sized marine plastics. This study introduces research cases with remote detection of marine plastics in South Korea and overseas, investigates potential feasibility of using the remote detection technology to marine microplastic monitoring, and suggests some future works to monitor marine microplastics with the remote detection.

  • The study of Mobile MGIS (Marine Geographic Information System) based on the Android Mobile Platform is mainly performed on effective methodologies which transform real world data to computing world data. Mobile GUI system has its own target on reliable data service by acquisition of geometric information using EFDC (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code) Model, accurate measurement and graphical visualization. Even simple visualizations can aid in the interpretation of complex hydrodynamic relationships that are frequently encountered in the marine environment. The Mobile MGIS provides an easy way for hydrodynamics geoscientists to construct complex visualizations that can be viewed with free software. This study proposes a Mobile GUI MGIS using EFDC Model result of Seomjin River estuary. Finally, we design a Seomjin River estuarine Coastal Waters Mobile MGIS integrating above data models. It must adds more ecological information and the various service item for approach more easily in order to user.

  • This study assessed documentation status of each environmental assessment items by analyzing the 243 case of marine EIS on the Consultation System of Sea Area Utilization. Observed rate of tidal elevation, current, temperature, salinity in maine environment were below 20%. The EFDC tool is applied substantially in hydrodynamic modeling. The verification process, however, is very insufficient using the recent observed data. Also, in-situ assessment rate of pelagic organism such as phytoplankton was below 50%, and assessment for Chlorophyll a was not accomplished. Ecological index evaluation for zooplankton and benthic ecosystem were not considered in statements. Especially, the rational assessment on the fisheries resources and protected species were very limited. It was necessary that the core assessment items (checklists) were established for environmental scoping. Furthermore, suggestion of information related to development, regional coastal management plan, aquaculture farms, and facilities were enhanced. The redundancy problem of proceedings between Environmental Impact Assessment and Sea Area Utilization Assessment System was improved.

  • This study focused on the a 20-year evaluation of the dynamism of critical thermal anomalies in Busan metropolitan area prompted by unusual infrastructural development and demographic growth rate. Archived Landsat thermal data derived-LST was the major input for UTFVI and hot spot analysis (Getis-Ord Gi*). Results revealed that the surface urban heat island-affected area has gradually expanded overtime from 23.32% to 32.36%; while the critical positive thermal anomalies (level-3 hotspots) have also spatially increased from 19.88% in 2000 to 23.56% in 2020, recording a net LST difference of > 5℃ between the maximum level-3 hotspot and minimum level-3 coldspot each year. It is been observed that thermal conditions of Busan have gradually deteriorated with time, which is potentially inherent in the rate of urban expansion. Thus, this work serves as an eye-opener to powers that be, to think and act constructively towards a sustainable thermal conform for city dwellers.

  • $\ulcorner$Ministry Of Maritime Affairs And Fisheries$\lrcorner$was established on 8 August 1996 by emerging ex-$\ulcorner$Maritime and Port Administration$\lrcorner$, $\ulcorner$Fisheries Administration$\lrcorner$and some other marine-related organs such as $\ulcorner$Maritime Police Agency$\lrcorner$, $\ulcorner$Marine Accident Inquiry Agency$\lrcorner$, etc., for the purpose of enhancing development of national marine polices in various aspect and promoting marine safety and environmental protection activities. Therefore, the unification of marine casualty statistics is required for the need of appreciating present condition and problem. This paper shows the Client/Server computing system which could replace the existing Main Frame system set up by Maritime and Port Administration and Marine Accident Inquiry Agency. It also gives the way to connect every casualty related organ for data exchange of casualty information and INTERNET for opening casualty information to the public. So, applicable techniques and basic policy direction is dealt with.

  • Recently development trends in information technology expand the activity boundaries for human living beyond coastal zones. These rapid changes of paradigm are stimulating scientists and strategists to be encouraged in making adequate model for marine geographic information system (MGIS) and their applications. Coastal zones are places which are affected by many factors, such as water quality, tide, wave, atmosphere, population, industry, etc. Therefore information related to the coast has to be integrated and analyzed for managing it efficiently. GIS-based Ocean Informatics is suited for those purposes and used in the study for establishing and managing coastal geographic and environmental information system. This paper reviews the properties of ocean and coastal spaces, then defines some MGIS related terminologies for clarifying the scope of MGIS boundaries. In this study, coastal geographic information is established by digital geographic information and digital terrain information. Digital coast chart having information on digital chart and map can merge and analyze various coastal information and can be a useful tool for the coastal integrated management.
