Treatment of root perforation elicits special considerations due to its blood-contaminated circumstances. It is known that conventional dental restorative materials are all leaking. Calcium sulfate is the material which react with water to become chemically set. This study, therefore, was performed to develop a new compound containing calcium sulfate and to evaluate its physical and biological characteristics. Three materials were used, IRM, calcium sulfate, calcium sulfate-hydroxyapatite compound. The composition of the calcium sulfate-hydroxyapatite compound was basically 50 % of calcium sulfate and 50 % of hydroxyapatite mixed with guajacol. The materials were mixed in conventional way and underwent four physical test procedures, setting time, solubility test, compressive strength, and marginal leakage test. All materials were evaluated under the scanning electron microscope to examine the marginal sealing ability. Animal experiment was also performed to test the materials' tissue response. Twenty-four dog's premolars were tested with either furcation perforations or apical retro-fillings. From the results, we found that calcium sulfate possess the good marginal sealing ability. However, calcium sulfate creates many voids which is caused by crystal thrusting action when it reacts with water. It seemed that the voids caused disintegration of the material which eventually lead to tissue reaction. By compounding calcium sulfate and hydroxyapatite, we were able to obtain the better physical properties but it showed larger marginal gap between the material and the root surface. Within the six weeks observation period, both IRM and calcium sulfate-hydroxyapatite compound showed good tissue responses in animal experiment. It is concluded that calcium sulfate would be the material of choice in root perforation repair, but the physical property needs to be further improved.
This study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of varnish application and thermocycling on the marginal leakage. 240 cavities of Class V were prepared on the 120 extracted premolars, and the cavities were filled with amalgam, Heliosit$^{(R)}$, and Hipol$^{(R)}$ after application of Copalite$^{(R)}$ or Duraphat$^{(R)}$. All specimens were immersed in methylene blue solution for 24 hours after thermocycling at $4^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$, embedded in acrylic resin, and sectioned with low speed saw into two parts. The sectioned specimens observed with the metallurgical microscope. The following results were obtained: 1. The marginal seal was more effective in the amalgam-filled cavities after application of Copalite$^{(R)}$ threetimes or an application of Duraphat$^{(R)}$ varnish than in those without varnish applications. 2. Of the composite resin-filled cavities, the leakage of the varnish applied cases showed much more than without application. 3. There was no significant difference in the effect of marginal sealing between Copalite$^{(R)}$ and Duraphat$^{(R)}$ applications. 4. There was a significant difference in the degree of the marginal leakage of amalgam-filled cavities between the groups of thermocycling times, but no significant difference in the resin-filled cavities. 5. There was no significant difference in the degree of the marginal leakage between the Heliosit$^{(R)}$ and the Hipol$^{(R)}$ resin-filled cavities.

The present in vitro study was undertaken to evaluate the initial marginal sealing ability of the sealant known as Nuva-Seal to seal cavity margins when used in conjunction with Adaptic and Nuva-Fil restorative materials. The results were as follows; 1. Where each Adaptic and Nuva-Fil restorative material was filled, showed the greatest degree of marginal leakage. 2. Where Adaptic and Nuva-Fil restorative materials were filled after acid etched surrrounding enamel surface adjoining the cavity margins, showed some degree of marginal leakage. 3. Where the Nuva-Seal was applied after acid etching a) to the cavity walls and the peripheral enamel surface adjoining the cavity margins, b) only to the surrounding enamel surface adjoining the cavity margins, and c) over the restorations and the peripheral enamel surface, showed complete absence of marginal leakage of Adaptic and Nuva-Fil restorative materials. 4. Where the Nuva-Seal was applied with the same methods as above, and restorations were placed on thermal stress also showed complete absence of marginal leakage of Adaptic and Nuva-Fil restorative materials.
A full-bead of multi-layer-steel engine head gasket, taking charge of the dynamic sealing of combustion chamber, is susceptible to fatigue failure. The fatigue durability of full-bead was assessed with the finite element analysis results and the high-cycle multi-axial fatigue theory. The assessment aimed to reveal the effects of the forming parameters and dimensions of full-bead. The results show that the selection of embossing parameters producing less deformation of bead plate is beneficial for the improvement of durability while the flatting has marginal influence. The fatigue durability also improves with the increase in the width of full-bead and the radial length of bore-side flat region. However, the dimensional effects are limited due to the occurrence of snap-through.
The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of restorative materials on the marginal leakage of wedge-shaped class V cavity. The study was performed in vitro in 25 defect-free permanent, extracted teeth. Wedge-shaped class V cavities were prepared and then the teeth were randomly selected and restored according to the following. Group A : restoration with Tetric Ceram(composite resin) Group B : restoration with Tetric flow(flowable resin) Group C : restoration with Compoglass after acid etching(compomer) Group D : restoration with Compoglass(compomer) Group E : restoration with Fuji II LC improved(resin-modified GIC) After thermocycling, the specimens were immersed in 5% basic fuchsin solution for 6 hours and sectioned longitudinally through the center of the restoration. The degree of marginal leakage was measured as the extent of dye penetration under the stereomicroscope. The data were analysed using one-way ANOVA. When significant differences found, multiple comparisons were made using Duncan's Multiple Range Test. The results were as follows: 1. The occlusal margins of all groups except for Fuji II LC improved showed lesser leakage than gingival margins and there was statistically significant difference(p<0.05). 2. At the occlusal margins, group A, B showed same marginal leakage scores, and others were decreased as group C, D, E in that order. There were statistically significant difference between group A, Band group D, E, group C and group E(p<0.05). 3. At the gingival margins, group B, C showed same marginal leakage scores, and others were decreased as group A, D, E in that order. But there was statistically significant difference between group B, C and group E(p<0.05). 4. In the Compoglass restoration, acid-etching technique was beneficial for marginal sealing ability at all of margins. But there was no statistically significant difference (p>0.05). In the restorations for wedge-shaped class V cavities, resin restoration with acid etching technique is recommended.

As Fiber-reinforced composite restorations cannot be made without leaving a marginal gap, luting cements play a pivotal role in sealing the margins as a prevention against margnal leakage. A recently introduced adhesive resin cement system is claimed to adhere chemically, as well as mechanically, to tooth substances, dental alloys and porcelain. But when considering the clinical variation conventional cementation using Zinc Phosphate and Glass-Ionomer can be requested. A vitro study was undertaken to compare microleakage and marginal fitness of Fiber-reinforced composite crowns(Targis/Vectris) depending upon luting cements. Fifty non-carious human premolar teeth were randomly divided into five experimental groups of 10 teeth each and luted with five luting cements. ($Bistite\;II^(R),\;Super-bond^(R),\;Variolink\;II^(R)$), Zinc phosphate and Glass-Ionomer cement) After 24 hours of being luted, all specimens were thermocycled 300 times through water bath of $5^{\circ}C\;and\;55^{\circ}C$ in each bath, then the quality of the marginal fitness was measured by the Digital Microscope and marginal leakage was characterized using Dye Penetration technique and the Digital Microscope The results were as follows : 1. The mean values of marginal fit were Bistite II($46.78{\mu}m$), Variolink II($56.25{\mu}m$), Super-Bond($56.78{\mu}m$), Glass-Ionomer($99.21{\mu}m$), Zinc Phosphate($109.49{\mu}m$) indicated a statistically significant difference at p<0.001. 2. The mean microleakage values of tooth-cement interface, restoration-cement interface were increased in the order of Variolink II, Bistite II, Super-Bond, Glass-Ionomer, Zinc Phosphate 3. Crowns luted with resin cement (Bistite II, Super-Bond, Variolink II, etc) exhibited less marginal gap and marginal leakage than those luted with conventional Glass-Ionomer and Zinc Phosphate cement. 4. The results indicated that all five luting systems yielded comparable and acceptable marginal fit.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate microleakage of etched and non-etched amalgam restorations lined with dentin bonding system primer and adhesives. Class V amalgam preparations were made in 100 extracted human premolars divided into 10 groups with 10 teeth each. SEM was taken to assess the dentin/amalgam interface. The results were as follows; 1. At the occlusal and gingival margins, all experimental groups showed lower leakage value than unlined group(p<0.05) The $Copalite^{(R)}-lined$ group showed higher leakage value than other experimental groups(p<0.05). 2. In all experimental groups, the gingival margin showed higher leakage value than the occlusal margin. 3. There were no significant difference between non-etching and etching groups, primer only and primer & adhesive groups, primer & adhesive and self-priming adhesive groups(p>0.05). 4. On the SEM observation, continuous gaps were observed in the unlined and $Copalite^{(R)}-lined$ groups, but the gaps were filled with primer or adhesive layer in other experimental groups.
When conventional root canal treatment is failed or contraindicated, retrograde root canal filling following apicoectomy is a valuable procedure, aimed at hermetically sealing the root canal against leakage of irritants from the canal into the periapical tissue. In this in vitro investigation, to analyze apical microleakage electrochemically in teeth with different retrograde filling materials and preparation types, single - rooted tooth was cut 2mm from the apex and each Class I and Slot preparation was prepared. Experimental groups : Group 1. Amalgam filling with cavity varnish in Class I preparation Group 2. Scotchbond 2+Silux filling in Class I preparation Group 3. Gutta percha filling with ZOE cement in Class I preparation Group 4. Amalgam filling with cavity varnish in Slot preparation Group 5. Scotchbond 2+Silux filling in Slot preparation Each specimens was immersed in 1% solution of KCl, and applied a potential of 9V external power supply. Measurements of the current flow were obtained at 1, 2, 3, 7, 9, 12, 14, 18, 21, 25 and 28 day after immerson. Marginal microleakage were compared and evaluated. The results were as follows ; 1. The group filled with composite resin with dentin bonding agent shows lower apical microleakage value than the group filled with amalgam following varnish application (P<0.01). 2. In the group filled with gutta percha, apical microleakage value was the hightest 3. There was no significant difference between Class I cavity and Slot type cavity regardless of the used materials.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of surface sealing materials on microleakage and surface roughness in Class V composite restorations. Twenty five standardized Class V cavity preparations were made on the facial surface of human premolars and were randomly assigned to 5 groups. The teeth were restored with Z-250 after applying Single Bond. Following 7 days storage in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$, the restorations were sealed as following systems : No sealing ; Single Bond Adhesive ; Biscover ; Fortify ; Optiguard. Then, toothbrush abrasion test was conducted using a wear testing machine. Surface roughness was measured by means of profilometer before and after toothbrushing and the results were statistically analysed by using a paired t-test and ANOVA. The bonded interfaces and the changes of surface roughness were examined by SEM. For microleakage test, specimens were stained in a $2\%$ methylene blue solution, then longitudinally sectioned and analyzed for leakage at occlusal and cervical interfaces using stereomicroscope. The results were statistically analysed by using a Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U test. Surface roughness was increasing in all groups after toothbrushing, but no statistically significant differences. In SEM observation, surface sealant was partially retained and partially detached in bonded interfaces. Especially, microgap was identified in cervical margins. In microleakage test, there was better seal in the enamel region and a significant difference between groups at occlusal margin. Control group and Single Bond group had significantly better marginal seal at enamel margin than cervical margin.

The purpose of this descriptive in vitro study were to evaluate the enamel-resin interface of the preventive resin restoration with regard to etching patterns and resin-tag morphology by means of scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows; 1. Three basic etching patterns were appeared simultaneously in a same microscopic section, in concentration between 20-50% phosphoric acid. 2. In 35% orthorhosphoric acid group etched for 60 second, the etching pattern was most prominent and demonstrate closely interdigitated with enamel-resin interface without the evidence of microspace, and the resin tags were longest ranged from 10-15 um in length. 3. This pattern of interface could reduce the incidence of marginal leakage and 2ndary caries formation. 4, The preventive resin restoration could serve as sealing a questionable occlusal surface.
