  • This study investigated nutritional status and eating behaviors among 59 nephritic patients with mild kidney malfunction in Korea. Nutritional status was measured by blood analysis and 1-3 day dietary recall and records, and eating behaviors were assessed by a questionnaire. Mean Body Mass Index(BMI) was within the normal range, while 21% and 14% of the patients were underweight and overweight, respectively. They received nutrition information mainly from doctors, nurses and mass media, but rarely from nutrition professionals. A quarter of patients skipped breakfast at least 3 times per 12% of the patients, respectively. Energy intake of 83% of the patients was less than the recommended level. Protein intakes of 56% of them were either under or over the recommended levels. Patients had low vitamin B$_2$ and calcium(<75% of the RDA) and excessive phosphorus(138% RDA) and vitamin C(170% RDA). Major food sources to absolute nutrient intakes were similar to those for the average Koreas, except for milk. Milk intake was low in our patients. Dietary quantity and quality were associated positively with BMI, albumin, and HDL-cholesterol and negatively with triglycerides and BUN. Results of this study indicate low nutritional status of the patients and, in turn a need for conducting nutritional education or counselling at regular at regular basis for the nephritic patients with mild kidney malfunction.

  • The purpose of this investigation was to determine the inhibition of $Na^+,\;K^+$-ATPase, cyclicAMP phophodiesterase and platelet activation by secondary metabolites isolated from mar ine organisms. The secondary metabolites were isolated and identified as six diterpenoids(1 : astrogorgin, 2 : ophirin, 3 : calicophirin B, 4, 5 and 6 : cladiellin) from the dichloromethane extract of Muricellajsp., four ceramides(1,2,3, and 4) from Acabaria undulata and three antharaquinones(1,2 : crysophanol, and 3 : physcion) from Urechis unicintus. The results demonstrated that diterpenoids(2,3, and 4) showed the inhibition of cyclicAMP phosphodiesterase, and ceramides(1,3, and 4) showed the inhibition of cyclicAMP phosphodiesterase and thrombin(0.1 units/ml)-induced aggregation of washed rabbit platelet, and anthrapuinones((1,2, and 3) showed the inhibition of $Na^+,\;K^+$-ATPase. Among the anthraquionones, 1,2-dimethoxy-3-methyl-8-hydroxy-anthraquinone(1) showed the inhibition of collagen(1.0 ${\mu}g$/ml)-induced aggregation in a concenration-dependent manner with IC50 value of 42.8 ${\mu}g$M.

  • Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder after Alzhemier's disease. Neuropathologically, PD is characterized by the selective loss of dopaminergic neurons. The neuronal toxicity of cytosolic excess dopamine (DA) has been described in many studies using several cell lines. In dopaminergic neurons, cytosolic excess DA is easily oxidized via monoamine oxidase (MAO)-B, tyrosinase or by auto-oxidation to produce neurotoxic metabolites such as DA quinone. So, in the present study, we induced cell death by treatment of DA ($600{\mu}M$) in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cell which was treated samples before 24 hr, and cell viability was measured by fluorescence activated cell sorter (FACs) analysis. Of those tested, the extracts of Poria cocos (赤茯笭)(whole), Gastrodia elata (rhizomes), Eucommia ulmoides (炒)(barks), Syneilesis palmata (whole), Acorus gramineus (rhizomes), Ligustrum japonicum (leaves) showed neuroprotective effects in dose dependent manner.

  • This study aims to clarify the effect of forest management practices(thinning and pruning) on soil physical properties and water quality to get the fundamental information on the facility of purifying water quality after forestry practices. Rainfall, throughfall, stemflow, soil and stream water were sampled at the study site which consists of Pinus rigida in Jinju National University Experimental Forest for 4 years from Mar. 1, 2002 to Nov. 30, 2006. Averaged tree height of the management site increased by 1.6m, compared to the value of the non-management site in Pinus rigida. Increment of averaged D. B. H. at the management site showed 4.2cm more in Pinus rigida compared with that at non-management sites. Mesopore ratios (pF2.7) and total porosities of A layer soil at the management site increased more than those at the non-management sites in both stands. Otherwise, soil bulk density resulted in being reversely. Water qualities of throughfall, stemflow and buffered soil water were influenced more positively by the management practice. The average electrical conductivity of stream water was $32.9{\mu}S/cm$ within the range of non-polluted stream water.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the zoonotic diseases of stray dog and cat in Gwangju, Korea. We chose randomly 300 samples which is 265, dogs and 35, cats in the public animal shelter from March to August of 2013. The animals' blood biochemistry values measured, and the out of normal values were 49.7% GOT, 36.3% GPT, and 78.0% GGT. The tested items were Dirofilaria immitis, Toxoplasma gondii, Brucella canis, Rabies virus. The positive results were 10% Dirofilaria immitis, 6.3% Toxoplasma gondii (antibody detected), 10% Rabies (antibody detected) but 0.0% in B. canis. The stray animals' antibody antigen positivity take effect high from Mar.-May. Therefore, we propose that those diseases should be monitering and vaccinating in Korea.

  • The Ni base superalloy Mar-M247 substrate was aluminized or aluminized after boronizing by the pack cementation under Ar atmosphere. The hot corrosion resistance and after-heat-treatment effect of aluminized specimens were studied by the cyclic hot corrosion test in $Na_2SO_4$-NaCl molten salt. XRD analysis showed that the $Ni_2Al_3$ phase was formed between the coated layer and substrate below 1273K but the NiAl phase above 1273K. The peak of the NiAl phase was developed after heat treatment. Corrosion test showed that corrosion resistance of the specimen with the NiAl phase was better than that with the $Ni_2Al_3$ phase. Corrosion resistance could be improved by heat treatment to form ductile NiAl phase, where cracks were not formed by thermal shock on coating layer. Moreover, it appeared that heat treatment played a role to improve corrosion resistance of Al diffusion coating above 1273K. The existence of boron in the Al diffusion coating layer obstructed outwared diffusion of Cr from the substrate, and it influenced on corrosion resistance of the coating layer by weakening adherence of the oxide scale.

  • Fiber-reinforced cementitious composites (FRCC) have emerged as a response to the calls for strong, ductile and sustainable concrete mixes. FRCC has shown outstanding mechanical properties and ductility where special fibres are used in the mixes to give it the strength and the ability to exhibit strain hardening. With the possibility of designing the FRCC mixes to include sustainable constituents and by-products materials such as fly ash, FRCC started to emerge as a green alternative as well. To be able to design mixes that achieve these conflicting properties in concrete, there is a need to understand the composition effect on FRCC and optimize these compositions. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the influence of FRCC compositions on the properties of fresh and hardened of FRCC and then to optimize these mix compositions using factorial design approach. Three factors, water-to-binder ratio (w/b), mineral admixtures (total of fly ash and metakaolin by cement content (MAR)), and metakaolin content (MK), were investigated to determine their effects on the properties of fresh and hardened FRCC. The results show the importance of combining both FA and MK in obtaining a satisfactory fresh and mechanical properties of FRCC. Models were suggested to elucidate the role of the studied factors and a method for optimization was proposed.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate dietary quality of Korea Antarctic expedition by menu analysis. Basic menu pattern, intake of dish and dish group, DDS (dietary diversity score), daily nutrients supply, and NAR (nutrient adequacy ratio) & MAR (mean adequacy ratio) were analyzed using 1 year menu list for the 10th Korea Antarctic expedition. Most frequently served basic menu patterns were ${\ulcorner}$Rice + Soup + 2 Side dish + Kimchi (53.5%)${\lrcorner}$ and ${\ulcorner}$Rice + Stew + 2 Side dish + Kimchi (13.4%)${\lrcorner}$. In the analysis of dish group, excluding Rice and Kimchi, ${\ulcorner}$Grilled foods${\lrcorner}$ and ${\ulcorner}$Pan-fried foods${\lrcorner}$ were served more than 25% per month. Most frequently served dishes were "pan-fried rolled egg", "grilled seaweed", "kimchi soup", "fruits cocktail, canned" and "salt-fermented squid". The kinds of served dishes were very restrictive. The average score of DDS showed 2.88 for summer and 2.97 for winter. Dairy group was almost not served. Fruit & Vegetable groups were also served a little as canned product. The energy ratio of Carbohydrate : Fat : Protein was 56.5 : 23.9 : 19.2, and 56.9 : 24.5 : 18.3, for summer and winter, respectively. Both seasons had higher ratio of carbohydrate and lower ratio of fat compared to the recommended ratio (44 : 40 : 16) in polar area. Ca : P ratio was very poor, 0.40 in both seasons. NAR scores of Ca, vitamin A, vitamin $B_2$ and vitamin C were also very low, ranged from 0.6 to 0.7. Consequently, a well-planned menu supplying adequate amount of dairy, fruit and vegetable is necessarily required including Ca, vitamin D, vitamin A, vitamin $B_2$ and vitamin C intake, and some nutritionally well-educated members are urgently needed to join in the expedition.

  • A numerical analysis for ROT sparger of PWR(Pressurized Water Reactor) is carried out. Computation is performed to investigate the flow characteristics as the change of design factor. As the result of this study, RDT sparger's flow resistance coefficient is K=3.53 at the present design condition if engineering mar&in is considered with 20%, and flow ratio into branch pipe is $Q_s/Q_i=0.41$. Velocity distribution at exit is not uniform because of separation in branch pipe. In the change of inlet flow rate and section area ratio of branch pipe for main pipe, flow resistance coefficient is increased as $Q_s/Q_i$ decreasing, but in the change of branch angle and outlet nozzle diameter of main pipe, flow resistance coefficient is decreased as $Q_s/Q_i$ decreasing. As the change rate of $Q_s/Q_i$ is the larger, the change rate of flow resistance coefficient is the larger. The change rate of pressure loss is the largest change as section area ratio changing. The optimal design condition of sparger is estimated as the outlet nozzle diameter ratio of main pipe is $D_s/D_i=0.333$, the section area ratio is $A_s/A_i=0.2$ and the branch angle is ${\alpha}=55^{\circ}$.
