During the past decades, dramatic technology changes affected the life of billions of people around the globe. Although these changes resulted to economic benefits, mostly for the developed countries, the undiscerning development also resulted to many side effects, such as environment pollution, scarce natural resources, global warming, and an increase of the gap between "those who have" and "those who have not", among others. Also, since these developments were based on high technologies, they were not suitable for 90% of the underdeveloped countries. In this review, the possible ways of increasing the quality of life in underdeveloped countries are described, by providing adaptive solutions using appropriate technologies. Some successful applications of appropriate and intermediate technology are introduced, and the need for a new undergraduate education course of engineering design based on appropriate technology is proposed for Korea.
Common problems have been observed in the existing Information Requirements Analysis (IRA) methodologies such as BSP(IBM), CSF(Rockart), or ISP(Information Engineering), etc. These methodologies require too much time and human resources for the IRA process, involves high complexity, and their IRA outcomes are frequently biased by the subjective views of the people involved. In this paper, we introduce a new methodology for the enterprise wide information requirements analysis utilizing templates and nine closed-ended questions. Extending the BIAIT(Business Information Analysis and Integration Technique) method, this methodology presents nine question about each firm's order type(7Q's for customer side and 2Q's for supplier side) to derive information processing characteristics of the firms. As the central component of this methodology, data and process templates for the manufacturing industry were established. To validate the methodology, suitability of the data and process templates were examined through six real world business cases.
This paper presents a method for constructing model of manufacturing processes for simulation and design of the discrete control logic. The models represent the discrete vent evolution of the system as well as features of the underlying continues processes, for applications such as discrete parts manufacture and assembly, the process is decomposed into operations and for each operation the required resources and associated discrete resource slates are Identified. The structure of the discrete-level control is modeled by modified Perti nets which are synthesized from single resource activity cycles. Construction of nets provides discrete control logic with guaranteed properties based on extended Petri nets theory, for illustration, the proposed method is applied to the high-level discrete control of a two-robotic assembly cell.

Remarkably improvements have occurred recently in the maintenance management of physical assets and productive systems, so that less wastages of energy and resources occur. The technology of maintenance is about finding and applying cost-effective ways of avoiding or overcoming performance deterioration. Maintenance is thus a vital support function in business, especially as increasingly large investments are being required in physical assets. TPM(Total Productive Maintenance) focuses on optimizing planning scheduling. Availability, performance and quality rate are other factors that affect productivity. Especially there are some losses that affect the overall equipment effectiveness(OEE). These losses lead to low values of OEE, which provides an indication of how effective the production precess is. This study explores the ways in which Korean small and medium manufacturing industries can improve OEE.

This study is concerned with the loading problems in flexible manufacturing system(FMS). The loading problem in FMS is a complex one, when the number of machine and job is increased. It may be time-consuming and even impossible to achieve an optimal solution about this problem mathematically. Thus, a heuristic method is recommended in order to gain near-optimal solutions in a practically acceptable time. A new loading algorithm is developed with a multi-criterion objective of considering the workload unbalance, and maximizing the machine utilization, throughput for critical resources such as the number of tool slots and the number of working hours in a scheduling period and so on. The results of SAS analysis indicated that true average throughput of proposed heuristic loading statistically exceeds that of Shanker and Srinivasulus loading algorithm at the significance level of 0.1.

Recently WCDMA signal transmission technology by large output microwave antenna have showed reduction of human resources and operating expense. But the existing antenna brackets cost is very expensive also its structure and functions are complicated. Unit brackets, suspending some sensors, subjected to acceleration loads, often fail due to self-vibration. To prevent such failures, it is necessary to understand the fatigue failure mode and to evaluate the fatigue life using tests or analysis techniques. The objective of this study is to develop the component test specifications, which are applicable to predict fatigue life at initial product design step, for unit brackets using vibration fatigue technique. So its application is limited to installation and management. In this project, we studied about more convenient bracket for microwave antennas through improvement on the existing antenna bracket's shortcoming and could develop an improved universal antenna bracket system for simple installation and application.

Traditional CVP (Cost-Volume-Profit) analysis employs linear cost and revenue functions within some specified time period and range of operations. Therefore CVP analysis is assumption of constant labor productivity. The use of linear cost functions implicity assumes, among other things, that firm's labor force is either a homogenous group or a collection homogenous subgroups in a constant mix, and that total production changes in a linear fashion through appropriate increase or decrease of seemingly interchangeable labor unit. But productivity rates in many firms are known to change with additional manufacturing experience in employee skill. Learning curve is intended to subsume the effects of all these resources of productivity. This learning phenomenon is quantifiable in the form of a learning curve, or manufacturing progress function. The purpose d this study is to show how alternative assumptions regarding a firm's labor force may be utilize by integrating conventional CVP analysis with learning curve theory, Explicit consideration of the effect of learning should substantially enrich CVP analysis and improve its use as a tool for planning and control of industry.
Nowadays, many commercial ERP products, such as Oracle, SAP, and Baan, etc, are designed based on large-scaled companies. It is difficult for small and medium-size companies with weakness in budgets and resources(e.g., human, organization, technique, and so on) to use them as it was. So, new ERP system need to be provided for small and medium-size companies. In this paper, we model and provide a conceptual ERP model for small and medium-size companies by using "4+1 View" architecture model of Unified Modeling Language(UML). The conceptual ERP model consists of five subsystems: Manufacturing, Sales, HumanResource and Payroll, Accounting, and Trading. Especially, we describe the conceptual ERP model focusing on "Manufacturing" subsystem by using several diagrams of UML. By using the conceptual ERP model, the ERP system′s developers of small and medium-size companies can obtain many benefits: improving the efficiency of software developing process and helping user requirements gathering and description of ERP system′s nonfunctional aspect as well as functional aspect.
This study is aimed at examining the relationship among the advanced manufacturing technology(AMT) types adopted in Korea, necessary strategic management activities for the selected AMT types and the performance of the AMT introduced. In order to identify such relationship, multivariate analyses are used based on the survey data collected from industry types such as metal processing and assembly, automobile parts, automobile assembly. electric and electronic devices. The study results indicate the following: (1) companies using CIM or ERP tend to be more prepared in terms of human resources; (2) companies adopted CIM and MRPII tend to demonstrate higher performance in terms of both organizational effectiveness and operational efficiency; (3) companies which adopted JIT or ERP perform better in terms of operational efficiency.
This study was carried out to develop the core technology for the manufacturing the flat floor panel with the bamboo grown in Damyang region maintaining its indigenous merits. Using capital bamboo(Phyllostachys bambusoides) of Damyang with superior physical and working properties, Authors have standardized the core technologies for the integrated production of flat floor panel using this superior bamboo i.e, washing, splitting, flattening, blasting, and overlaying over plywood. It is expected to increase the income from bamboo forest and to enhance the image of the eco-city, Damyang with this technological development. Additional quality assuring test and economical analysis for the industralization as building material will be performed.
