  • This paper proposes a bit manipulation accelerator (BMA) having application specific instructions, which efficiently supports scrambling, convolutional encoding, puncturing, and interleaving. Conventional DSPs cannot effectively perform bit manipulation functions since かey have multiply accumulate (MAC) oriented data paths and word-based functions. However, the proposed accelerator can efficiently process bit manipulation functions using parallel shift and Exclusive-OR (XOR) operations and bit jnsertion/extraction operations on multiple data. The proposed BMA has been modeled by VHDL and synthesized using the SEC $0.18\mu m$ standard cell library and the gate count of the BMA is only about 1,700 gates. Performance comparisons show that the number of clock cycles can be reduced about $40\%\sim80\%$ for scrambling, convolutional encoding and interleaving compared with existing DSPs.

  • In this paper, we Implement a new arithmetic computation for MPEG audio data to overcome the limitations of real number processing in the fixed-point arithmetics, such as: overheads in processing time and power consumption. We aims at efficiently dealing with real numbers by extending the fixed-point arithmetic manipulation for floating-point numbers in MPEG audio data, and implementing the DSP libraries to support the manipulation and computation of real numbers with the fixed-point resources.

  • In this paper, a localization algorithm and an autonomous controller for PETASUS system II which is an underwater vehicle-manipulator system, are proposed. To estimate its position and to identify manipulation targets in a structured environment, a multi-rate extended Kalman filter is developed, where map information and data from inertial sensors, sonar sensors, and vision sensors are used. In addition, a three layered control structure is proposed as a controller for autonomy. By this controller, PETASUS system II is able to generate waypoints and make decisions on its own behaviors. Experiment results are provided for verifying proposed algorithms.

  • A reward function suitable for a task is required to manipulate objects through reinforcement learning. However, it is difficult to design the reward function if the ample information of the objects cannot be obtained. In this study, a demonstration-based object manipulation algorithm called stochastic exploration guided by demonstration (SEGD) is proposed to solve the design problem of the reward function. SEGD is a reinforcement learning algorithm in which a sparse reward explorer (SRE) and an interpolated policy using demonstration (IPD) are added to soft actor-critic (SAC). SRE ensures the training of the critic of SAC by collecting prior data and IPD limits the exploration space by making SEGD's action similar to the expert's action. Through these two algorithms, the SEGD can learn only with the sparse reward of the task without designing the reward function. In order to verify the SEGD, experiments were conducted for three tasks. SEGD showed its effectiveness by showing success rates of more than 96.5% in these experiments.

  • The manipulation of Boolean functions is a fundamental part of computer science, and many problems in the design and testing of digital systems can be expressed as a sequence of operations. It is mainly a paper of our research on the techniques of Boolean function manipulation using Binary Decision Diagram(BDDs) and their applications for VLSI CAD System. In many practical applications related to digital system design, it is a basic technique to use ternary-valued functions. In this paper, we discuss the methods for representing logical values.

  • Haptic rendering is a process providing force feedback during interactions between a user and a virtual object. This paper presents a real-time haptic rendering technique for deformable objects based on visual information of intervention between a tool and a real object in a remote place. A user can feel the artificial reaction force through a haptic device in real-time when a slave system exerts manipulation tasks on a deformable object. The models of the deformable object and the manipulator are created from the captured image obtained with a CCD camera and the recognition of objects is achieved using image processing techniques. The force at a rate of 1 kHz for stable haptic interaction is deduced using extrapolation of forces at a low update rate. The rendering algorithm developed was tested and validated on a test platform consisting of a one-dimensional indentation device and an off-the shelf force feedback device. This software system can be used in a cellular manipulation system providing artificial force feedback to enhance a success rate of operations.

  • A data manipulation unit capable of bit partitioned shift and various multimedia data type conversions in addition to conventional shift, is presented. Utilizing the similarity between the data type conversion and the shift, the addition of small amount of interconnections to conventional barrel shifter enables data type conversion as well as shift operations with minimal hardware overhead. The presented data manipulation unit is composed of the shifter block for conventional shift and a pack and a unpack block. It has been designed with verilog HDL and the VLSI implementation results using compass 0.6 um standard cell are discussed.

  • Virtual object weight perception is an important topic, as it heightens the believability of object manipulation in immersive virtual environments. Although weight perception can be achieved using haptic interfaces, their technical complexity makes them difficult to apply in immersive virtual environments. In this study, we present a visual pseudo-haptic feedback system that simulates and depicts the weights of virtual objects, the effect of which is weight perception. The proposed method recognizes grasping and manipulating hand motions using computer vision-based tracking methods, visualizing a Force Arrow to indicate the current lifting forces and its difference from the standard lifting force. With the proposed Force Arrow method, a user can more accurately perceive the logical and unidirectional weight and therefore control the force used to lift a virtual object. In this paper, we investigate the potential of the proposed method in discriminating between different weights of virtual objects.
