Spray Behavior Characteristics of Injector Used for HC-DeNOx Catalyst System in the Transparent Exhaust Manifold (모사 배기관 내 HC-DeNOx 촉매용 인젝터의 분무 거동 특성)

  • A new method that optimizes a control of hydrocarbon (HC) addition to diesel exhaust gas for HC type DeNOx catalyst system has been developed. These catalysts are called as the HC-DeNOx catalyst in this paper. The system using HC-DeNOx catalyst requires a resonable quantity of hydrocarbons addition in the inlet gas of the catalyst, because the HC concentration in a diesel engine is so low that the HC is not sufficient for NOx conversion. Generally ambient temperature in the exhaust manifold is $250{\sim}350^{\circ}C$, so spray behavior in this case is different from that of any other condions. This research shows spray behavior of injected hydrocarbons in the transparent exhaust manifold.

Experimental and numerical study on coupled motion responses of a floating crane vessel and a lifted subsea manifold in deep water

  • The floating crane vessel in waves gives rise to the motion of the lifted object which is connected to the hoisting wire. The dynamic tension induced by the lifted object also affects the motion responses of the floating crane vessel in return. In this study, coupled motion responses of a floating crane vessel and a lifted subsea manifold during deep-water installation operations were investigated by both experiments and numerical calculations. A series of model tests for the deep-water lifting operation were performed at Ocean Engineering Basin of KRISO. For the model test, the vessel with a crane control system and a typical subsea manifold were examined. To validate the experimental results, a frequency-domain motion analysis method is applied. The coupled motion equations of the crane vessel and the lifted object are solved in the frequency domain with an additional linear stiffness matrix due to the hoisting wire. The hydrodynamic coefficients of the lifted object, which is a significant factor to affect the coupled dynamics, are estimated based on the perforation value of the structure and the CFD results. The discussions were made on three main points. First, the motion characteristics of the lifted object as well as the crane vessel were studied by comparing the calculation results. Second, the dynamic tension of the hoisting wire were evaluated under the various wave conditions. Final discussion was made on the effect of passive heave compensator on the motion and tension responses.

  • Three-dimensional optimum design of coat-hanger die is performed using power-law and Carreau models. It is found that the three-dimensional optimum design algorithm shows good convergence with the non-Newtonian fludis. the nore realistic optimum design is accomplished by employing Carreau model with the three-dimensional design method. The effect of vixcosity modles is investigated by comparing the optimum manifold profiles and flow rate distributions of power-law and Carreau modles. Through the accurated viscosity representation of Carreau model, the effect of total flow rate on the optimum manifold profile is investigated.

A Surface Displaced From a Manifold (다양체 기반의 변위곡면)

  • 본 논문에서는 다양체 (manifold) 구조와 스칼라 변위함수 (scalar displacement function)에 기반한 새로운 변위곡면 (displaced surface)의 표현 기법을 제안한다. 변위곡면은 제어메쉬 (control mesh)의 각 정점에서 변위된 국소적 패치들 (displaced local patches)을 블렌딩 (blending)함으로써 생성된다. 제안된 변위곡면은 점 군 (point cloud)의 형태로 주어진 기하학적 모델을 근사하기 위해서 사용된다. 점 군의 데이터로터 제어메쉬가 생성되고, 점 군의 점들이 제어메쉬의 국소적 패치들 (local patches)에 사영 (projection)되어 각 패치들로 부터의 스칼라 변위함수가 구해지고, 이러한 변위함수들을 최적화 하여 높은 정밀도를 갖는 최종적인 곡면을 생성된다. 점 군의 형태로 주어진 다양한 모델에 대한 실험 결과를 통해서 제안된 근사기법의 효율성과 정밀도가 입증된다. 본 논문에서 제안된 표현기법은 다 단계 (multi-level) 변위함수를 통해 다중해상도 표현 (multi-resolution representations)과 골격기반 형상변형 (skeleton-driven deformation)등과 같은 다양한 응용들에 효율적으로 사용된다.

A Study on the Flow Characteristics of the Mixture in an Intake Manifold (흡기관 내의 혼합기 유동 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The behaviors of the mixture at the downstream of throttle valve in a TBI type gasoline engine plays a greater role in design of intake system. A good mixture has been influencing directly not only on the engine power but also on the pollutant emission. The mixture flow in an intake manifold is very complex, and the flow characteristics are varied with the valve type, valve angle, inlet air flow rate, and the other flow factors. Three kinds of valve are chosen in this study, and the informations of the mixture flow are observed experimentally using a PIV apparatus. Perforate valve has a smaller recirculation zone than the case of solid valve with a lower valve loss coefficient, and iti is verified that the perforated valve is also suitable to control the flow rate in a mixture flow system.

High Temperature Tensile Properties of Heat-resistant Cast Ferritic Stainless Steels (고내열 페라이트계 스테인레스 주강의 고온인장특성 평가)

  • Exhaust manifold is a very important component that is directly connected to air environment pollution and that requires strict mechanical properties such as high temperature fatigue and oxidation. Among stainless steels, the ferritic stainless steel with body-centered cubic structure shows excellent resistance of stress-corrosion cracking, ferromagnetic at room temperature, very excellent cold workability and may not be enhanced by heat treatment. The microstructural characteristics of four cast ferritic stainless steels which are high heat-resistant materials, were analyzed. By comparing and evaluating the mechanical properties at room temperature and high temperature in a range of 400℃~800℃, a database was established to control and predict the required properties and the mechanical properties of the final product. The precipitates of cast ferritic stainless steels were analyzed and the high-temperature deformation characteristics were evaluated by comparative analysis of hardness and tensile characteristics of four steels at room temperature and from 400℃ to 800℃.

Research and development of Hyundai FFVs(flexible fuel vehicles) (현대 FFV(Flexible Fuel Vehicle) 개발)

  • This paper describes Hyundai's research and development work on a flexible fuel vehicle (FFV). The work on FFV has been conducted to evaluate its potential as an alternative to the conventional gasoline vehicle. Hyundai FFV described here can be operated on M85, gasoline, or any of their combinations, in which the methanol concentration is measured by an electrostatic type fuel sensor. For that operation, a special FFV ECU(Eletronic Control Unit) has been developed and incorporated in the FFV. The characteristics affecting FFV operation, such as FFV ECU control strategy and injector flow rate, have been investigated and optimized through the experiment. And various development tests have been performed in view of engine performance, durability, cold startability, and exhaust emissions reduction. The exhaust gas aftertreatment system consisting of manifold type catalyst and secondary air injection system shows good emission reduction performance including formaldehyde, and finally, the possibility of the FFVs as the low emission vehicles is evaluated by presenting NMOG(Non-Methane Organic Gases) levels with respect to M0 and M85. With these results, it is concluded that FFV can be a candidate for the low emission vehicles, but more works on its durability improvement is required.

Design of nonlinear optimal regulators using lower dimensional riemannian geometric models

  • A new Riemannian geometric model for the controlled plant is proposed by imbedding the control vector space in the state space, so as to reduce the dimension of the model. This geometric model is derived by replacing the orthogonal straight coordinate axes on the state space of a linear system with the curvilinear coordinate axes. Therefore the integral manifold of the geometric model becomes homeomorphic to that of fictitious linear system. For the lower dimensional Riemannian geometric model, a nonlinear optimal regulator with a quadratic form performance index which contains the Riemannian metric tensor is designed. Since the integral manifold of the nonlinear regulator is determined to be homeomorphic to that of the linear regulator, it is expected that the basic properties of the linear regulator such as feedback structure, stability and robustness are to be reflected in those of the nonlinear regulator. To apply the above regulator theory to a real nonlinear plant, it is discussed how to distort the curvilinear coordinate axes on which a nonlinear plant behaves as a linear system. Consequently, a partial differential equation with respect to the homeomorphism is derived. Finally, the computational algorithm for the nonlinear optimal regulator is discussed and a numerical example is shown.

Simulation of the Gas Exchange Process in a Two - Stroke Cycle Diesel Engine (2행정 사이클 디젤기관의 가스교환과정 시뮬레이션)

  • The scavenging efficiency has a great influence on the performance of a diesel engine, especially slow two-stroke diesel engines which are usually used as a marine propulsion power plant. And this is greatly affected by the conditions in the cylinder, scavenging manifold and exhaust manifold during the gas exchange process. There are many factors to affect on the scavenging efficiency and these factors interact each other very complicatedly. Therefore the simulation program of the gas exchange process is very useful to improve and predict the scavenging efficiency, due to the high costs associated with redesign and testing. In this paper, a three-zone scavenging model for two-stroke uniflow engines was developed to link a control-volume-type engine simulation program for performance prediction of long-stroke marine engines. In this model it was attempted to simulate the three different regions perceived to exist inside the cylinder during scavenging, namely the air, mixing and combystion products regions, by modeling each region as a seperate control volume. Finally the scavenging efficiency was compared with three type of scavenging modes, that is, pure displacement, partial mixing and prefect mixing.

  • We study how to design conventional feedback controllers to drive chaotic trajectories of the well-known systems to their equilibrium points or any of their inherent periodic orbits. The well-known chaotic systems are Heon map and Duffing's equation, which are used as illustrative examples. The proposed feedback controller forces the chaotic trajectory to the stable manifold as OGY method does. Simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed design method.
