For the purposes of augmentation of the aid for case analysis and diagnosis of malocclusion, a roentgenocephalometric study was made from 84 Korean adolescences. The Subjects consist of 42 males and 42 females aged from 17 to 20 years with normal occlusion and acceptable facial appearance. The author measured 18 angles and 14 linear distances as suggested by Jarabak. The following results were obtained. 1) Each linear measurement of the males' skull was greaten than that of the females. 2) The posterior to anterior facial height was $69.2\%$ in the males and $67.1\%$ in the females. 3) In the relationship of upper lip to esthetic line, the lip of females was more behind than that of males. 4) Saddle angle was $124.7^{\circ}$, articular angle was $148.7^{\circ}$, genial angle was $119.4^{\circ}$ and upper and lower genial angles were $45.1^{\circ}\;(N-Go-a^{\circ})$ and $74.2^{\circ}\;(N-Go-Me^{\circ})$. 5) The ratio of mandibular body to anterior cranial base was about 1:1. 1. 6) The angulations of $SNA^{\circ},\;SNB^{\circ}\;and\;SNP^{\circ}$ were as follows; $SNA^{\circ},\;80.3^{\circ},\;SNB^{\circ},\;79.8^{\circ},\;SNP^{\circ},\;81.1^{\circ}$. 7) The angle of the sella-nasion plane to the mandibular plane $(SNG^{\circ}Me^{\circ})$ was $32.0^{\circ}$ and that of the occlusal plane to the mandibular plane was $18.2^{\circ}$. 8) The angle of the maxillary central incisor to the sellanasion plane $(1-SN^{\circ})$ was $105.6^{\circ}$. That of the mandibular central incisor to the mandibular plane $(1-GoMe^{\circ})$ was $94.0^{\circ}$, and the interincisal angle $(1\;to\;1^{\circ})$ was $127.6^{\circ}$. 9) The linear distance from incisal edge of upper central incisor to facial plane was 8.0mm and that of lower central incisor was 4.6mm. 10) In the relationship of the lower lip to the esthetic line, the lower lip was 0.2mm front of the esthetic line.
The authors observed a case of Cherubism from 8 year-old boy who visited the Dept. of Oral Radiology in S.N.U.H. The patient complained of painless, bilateral swelling on mandibular angle area. Radiologically, sharply defined multiocular radiolucencies are found at both mandibular angle and maxillary posterior area. Another lesion is found at mandibular symphysis area. Interestingly, patient did not show 'look toward heaven' appearance in spite of maxillary involovment. The purpose of this paper if to describe the characteristic clinical, radiological and histopathological feature of the patient without familial involvement.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of advancement magnitude and changes in mandibular plane angle on the stability of mandibular advancement. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cohort study evaluated the postoperative stability of mandibular advancement in class II skeletal subjects who underwent bilateral sagittal split osteotomy. Radiographs taken preoperatively, immediately postoperatively and 1 year postoperatively were traced and analyzed using linear and angular measurements. To determine horizontal and vertical relapse, an X-Y coordinate system was established in which the X-axis was constructed by rotating S-N downward by $7^{\circ}$ (approximation of the Frankfort horizontal plane) and the Y-axis was defined as a line perpendicular to the X-axis and passing through the point Sella. For certain reference points including point A, point B, pogonion and menton, the perpendicular distance between each point and both axes was determined and cephalometric variables were recorded as X and Y coordinates. Results: Twenty-five subjects were studied. A significant correlation between the amount of mandibular advancement and relapse in the B point (vertical and horizontal) and the pogonion point was observed (vertical and horizontal, P<0.001). Evaluation of data demonstrated a positive correlation between the mandibular plane angle (SN/ML) change and vertical relapse in the B point (P<0.05). A simple regression model demonstrated that 74% of horizontal relapse and 42.3% of vertical relapse in the B point was related to the amount of mandibular advancement. The receiver operating characteristic test showed that 8.5 mm mandibular advancement is related to a relapse rate of 1 mm or more in the pogonion, vertically or horizontally. Conclusion: The magnitude of mandibular advancement is a stronger surgical predictor for horizontal rather than vertical relapse at the B point. Changes in mandibular plane angle (SN/ML) during surgery affect vertical, but not horizontal relapse at the B point.
Purpose: Fibrillar collagens like type I collagen, are the major constituent of the extracellular matrix and structural protein of bone. Also, it can be a scaffold for osteoblast migration. The purpose of this study is to estimate the effects of absorbable atelo-collagen sponge (Teruplug$^{(R)}$, Terumo biomaterials Co., Tokyo, Japan) insertion in tooth extraction sites on periodontal healing of the second molar, healing of the fractured mandibular bone and new bone formation of third molar socket after the extraction of the impacted third molar with mandibular angle fracture. Methods: In our study of six cases of mandibular angle fractures, all of them underwent the extraction of the third molar tooth & absorbable atelo-collagen sponge insertion in tooth extraction site. Three of them had a intraoral infection & oral opening to fracture site, two of the six had dental caries, and only one had reduction problem due to third molar position. Six consecutive patients with noncomminuted fractures of the mandibular angle were treated by open reduction and internal fixation using one noncompression miniplates and screws placed through a transoral incision. Results: All of the patients have showed good postoperative functions and have not experienced complications requiring second surgical intervention. There was well healing of the mandibular bone and the most new bone formation of third molar socket after the extraction of the impacted third molar with mandibular angle fracture. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that absorbable atelo-collagen sponge is relatively favorable bone void filler with prevention of tissue collapse, food packing, and enhance periodontal healing. Thus, the use of atelo-collagen sponge and one noncompression miniplate seems to be relatively easy, safe, and effective for the treatment of fractures of the mandibular angle and third molar extraction.

A prognathic mandible and prominent gonial angle are considered to be unattractive in the Orient because it gives the face a square and muscular appearance. Requests for contouring of the mandibular angle are rare in the other race but are much more common in Korea and, through out the Orient. So, we often encounter a patient with a prognathic mandible and squarish or broad face who wishes to have his or her facial size reduced minimally or to acquire a round or slender appearance. But, mandibular angle is located in the deepest part of the operative field and the strong tension of the lateral soft tissue makes retraction difficult. It is extremely difficult to reduce the gonial angle with sagittal split ramus osteotomy by intraoral approach at the same time. We apply the method of gonial angle reduction during SSRO and had satisfactory results. We will present our results and hope to give some useful information for management of mandibular deformity.

Objectives: We retrospectively evaluated the impact of mandibular third molars on the occurrence of angle and condyle fractures. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective investigation using patient records and radiographs. The sample set consisted of 440 patients with mandibular fractures. Eruption space, depth and angulation of the third molar were measured. Results: Of the 144 angle fracture patients, 130 patients had third molars and 14 patients did not. The ratio of angle fractures when a third molar was present (1.26 : 1) was greater than when no third molar was present (0.19 : 1; odds ratio, 6.58; P<0.001). Of the 141 condyle fractures patients, the third molar was present in 84 patients and absent in 57 patients. The ratio of condyle fractures when a third molar was present (0.56 : 1) was lower than when no third molar was present (1.90 : 1; odds ratio, 0.30; P<0.001). Conclusion: The increased ratio of angle fractures with third molars and the ratio of condyle fractures without a third molar were statistically significant. The occurrence of angle and condyle fractures was more affected by the continuity of the cortical bone at the angle than by the depth of a third molar. These results demonstrate that a third molar can be a determining factor in angle and condyle fractures.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the alveolar bone surface following root separation angle in the mandibular second molars. The fifty mandibular second molars(which were extracted) were selected, and the alveolar bone surface following root separation angle of the selected teeth were evaluated. The results were obtained as follows; 1. The root separation angle of fifty mandibular second molars were divided into three groups. The first $group(10-20^{\circ})$ was made up of ten teeth, the second $group(20-30^{\circ})$ was made up of fifteen teeth, and the third group(30-40$^{\circ}$) was made up of twenty-five teeth. 2. The mean root separation angle was $28.1^{\circ}$. The mean alveolar bone rate on the mesial surface of the mesial root was 44.27%, on the distal surface of the mesial root was 36.52%, on the mesial surface of the distal root was 33.45%, and on the distal surface of the distal root was 25.28%. 3. The mean alveolar bone rate on the distal surface of the mesial root, which composed the root separation area, was 32.95% in the first group, 36.06% in the second group, and 38.22% in the third group. The mean alveolar bone rate in the mesial surface of the distal root was 31.40% in the first group, 31.93% in the second group, and 35.18% in the third group. 4. The positive correlation was found between the root separation angle and the alveolar bone rate in the root separation area.(P<0.05) Although the mandibular second molar is a very important tooth in the oral cavity, its treatment and diagnosis is very difficult due to the variation of its root form. When periodontal disease involves the mandibular second molar, the result of this study assists in its treatment and diagnosis.
Objective: To evaluate soft- and hard-tissue changes in the mandibular angle area after the administration of botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) injection to patients with masseteric hypertrophy by using three-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography (3D-CBCT). Methods: Twenty volunteers were randomly divided into two groups of 10 patients. Patients in group I received a single BoNT-A injection in both masseter muscles, while those in group II received two BoNT-A injections in each masseter muscle, with the second injection being administered 4 months after the first one. In both groups, 3D-CBCT was performed before the first injection and 6 months after the first injection. Results: Masseter muscle thicknesses and cross-sectional areas were significantly reduced in both groups, but the reductions were significantly more substantial in group II than in group I. The intergonial width of the mandibular angle area did not change significantly in either group. However, the bone volume of the mandibular gonial angle area was more significantly reduced in group II than in group I. Conclusions: The repeated administration of BoNT-A injections may induce bone volume changes in the mandibular angle area.
This study was designed to analyse vertical dysplasia such as open bite or deep bite in persons with skeletal Class III malocclusion. The subjects consisted of 60 control patients, 40 Class III open bite patients and 40 Class III deep bite patients. The mean age was 19.8 years in the control group, 17.8 years in the Class III open bite group and 16.5 years in the Class III deep bite group. The results were as follows: 1. In Class III malocclusion patients, the characteristics of the vertical dysplasia are under the palatal plane. 2. In Class III malocclusion patients, the items showing the characteristics of the vertical dysplasia are mandibular plane angle, lower gonial angle, lower facial height, dental height & inclination of the upper first molar, interincisal angle, maxillary & mandibular occlusal plane angle. 3. In Class III malocclusion patients, LPFH/LAFH ratio shows the highest significance among the facial height ratios. 4. In Class III malocclusion patients, open bite group has a upward cant of maxillary occlusal plane & downward cant of mandibular occlusal plane. And deep bite group has a downward cant of maxillary occlusal plane & upward cant of mandibular occlusal plane. 5. In Class III malocclusion patients, the molar teeth of the open bite group are measially inclined and those of the deep bite group are upright.
