Fuzzy programming for improving redundancy-reliability allocation problems in series-parallel systems

  • Redundancy-reliability allocation problems in multi-stage series-parallel systems are addressed in this study. Fuzzy programming techniques are proposed for finding satisfactory solutions. First, a multi-objective programming model is formulated for simultaneously maximizing system reliability and minimizing system total cost. Due to the nature of uncertainty in the problem, the fuzzy set theory and technique are used to convert the deterministic multi-objective programming model into a fuzzy nonlinear programming problem. A heuristic method is developed to get satisfactory solutions for the fuzzy nonlinear programming problem. A Pareto optimal solution is found with maximal degree of satisfaction from the interception area of fuzzy sets. A case study that is related to the electronic control unit installed on aircraft engine over-speed protection system is used to implement the developed approach. Results suggest that the developed fuzzy multi-objective programming model can effectively resolve the fuzzy and uncertain problem when design goals and constraints are not clearly confirmed at the initial conceptual design phase.

  • An environmental test has been performed in order to improve the lifetime and reliability of the electrical units on aircraft. However, faults occurring in the field of aircraft have been difficult to predict and prevent, and new concepts for reliability testing are desired. Therefore, a composite reliability test sequence was proposed in the conventional studies. This study introduces test sequence guidelines based on relevant principles and considerations for electronic testing according to International Standard IEC-60068-1 and the United States Military Standard MIL-STD-810G. In addition, we analyze possible causes of failure using two-step QFD based on aircraft operation scenarios. Finally, the proposed test sequence can reproduce various and realistic failure modes for electrical units on aircraft.

  • In this paper, we consider possibility that the multiple errors occur in each testing stage. At present, software reliability modeling is considered as a part of software reliability quality assurance in software engineering. However they dealt with the software growth model for the single error debugging at each testing stage until now. Hence it is necessary to study software reliability with multiple errors debugging. Therefore we propose software reliability growth modeling and estimate the parameters in the proposed software reliability growth model for the multiple errors debugging at each testing stage.

  • Software testing during development and operation should exercise to obtain the desired software quality and leave failure data set. So far, many software reliability models are classified and can be used to measure a software reliability only based on its failure history But, in practice, developers or testers of software systems must decide which existing software reliability model can be fitted. In this paper, we will show that an appropriate reliability model can be selected by considering relations between characteristics of each testing environment and models' assumptions. Several methods of software testing are presented and discussed. Also, unit test, integrated test, function test and system test that are sequentially exercised during development will be introduced.

  • Air Traffic Management (ATM) system requires extremely high reliability for the safe and dependable operations in the airport. This paper reports a study on the reliability of the prototype ATM hardware system including the servers and local area networks. Reliability Block Diagram and Fault Tree Analysis on the prototype ATM hardware were performed.

  • Recently, product-reliability and process-reliability in product development processes has been regarded as an important issue in many manufacturers. TRIZ which is theory for inventive solving is required to obtain reliability of each process. To solve the technological problems, TRIZ provides problems can be occurred in product development processes as a contradiction matrix based on 40 creative invention principles with alternatives for physical and technological contradiction. This paper suggests the method for inventive solving to ensure the reliability assurance of product development processes based on TRIZ.

  • This paper concerns an expert system for reliability management. The system includes data base, life data analysis, life testing sampling plans and system operation. PROLOG is used as a language with dBASE III+ for the data base management system and C for calculations and graphics. This system analyzing the data and selecting an appropriate sampling plan can be implemented on an IBM PC 386 or a higher level machine.

  • This paper deals with the selection of the important Influencing Factors (IFs) under accident management situations in nuclear power plants for use in the assessment of human errors. In order to achieve this goal, we collected two types of IF taxonomies, one is the full set IF list mainly developed for human error analysis. and the other is the IFs for human reliability analysis (HRA) in probabilistic safety assessment (PSA). Five sets of IF taxonomy among the full set IF list and ten sets of IF taxonomy among HRA methodologies were collected in the study. From the review and analysis of BRA IFs, we could obtain some insights for the selection of HRA IFs. By considering the situational characteristics of the accident management domain, candidate IFs are chosen. Finally, those IFs are structured hierarchically to be appropriate for the use in the assessment of human error under accident management situation. Three nuclear accidents such as TMI. Chernobyl and JCO were analysed to validate the proposed taxonomy.

  • Guided missiles are a one-shot system that finishes their purpose after being used once, and due to the long-term storage until launch, the storage reliability is calculated during development, and performance is maintained through periodic inspections until the life cycle arrives. However, the reliability standards applied in the development of guided missiles were established by analyzing data accumulated by the United States during long-term operation in the country, and since they are different from our environment, the 00 guided missiles that have been deployed in the armed forces for more than 10 years under the premise that there is a difference from actual reliability. As a result of verifying the appropriateness of the current inspection cycle by analyzing the actual reliability of the missile, the necessity of changing the inspection period was derived because it was higher than the predicted reliability. It is proposed to build and utilize a lifespan management system that can systematically collect all data such as shooting and maintenance results by classification, and to establish a reliable reliability standard based on the accumulated data.

This paper aims to propose a risk assessment system which can be applied to product with high-reliability and high-safety, and also show an empirical application of the proposed risk assessment system for the development of motorcycle helmets.
