The purpose of this study was to find out the degree of self-consciousness of oral malodor, the status of oral hygiene care, some oral examination factors, and measurement values of malodor compounds through conduction oral examination and questionnaire survey, and measuring volatile malodor compounds by instrumental analysis. The data were collected from 155 patients visiting a dental clinic by using a self-administered questionnaire, conducting oral examination for halitosis, and measuring malodor compounds with Oral Chroma. The rate of recognizing their breath as 'somewhat bad' were 80.0% for the female patients and 74.3% for the male, and, however, 14.3% of the male recognized their breath as 'very bad' while 18.8% of the female did not recognized oral malodor, showing statistically significant difference between gender(p=0.004). The average concentrations of volatile sulfur compounds measured by Oral Chroma were 1.65 ng/10 ml for hydrogen sulfide, 1.71 ng/10 ml for methyl mercaptan and 1.66 ng/10 ml for dimethyl sulfide, on the average, respectively, exceeding malodor threshold levels of all 3 compounds, and were significantly higher in the male group than those in the female, also exceeding all threshold levels except hydrogen sulfide values of the female group. The type of oral malodor was the most prevalent for Type I as 23.2%, followed by Type V, Type IV, Type II whileas Type I and Type IV in the female as 30.6% and 25.9% respectively, showing statistically significant difference by gender(p=0.006). The correlations among oral examination indices was the highest between tongue fur score and simplified oral hygiene index, followed by a significant reverse correlation between the number of fixed prosthodontic teeth and the number of dental caries(p=0.000).

The carbonyl compounds in the atmosphere belong to one of the regulatory pollutants for the malodor control designated by the Korean Ministry of Environment(KMOE). In the present study, the emission concentration levels of carbonyl compounds were measured along with a number of criteria odor pollutants from a total of 47 individual companies(June 2004 to January 2005). The results of our study showed that a number of carbonyl compounds(such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, and butyraldehyde) maintained significantly high mean concentrations of 298 to 372 ppb. In contrast, other carbonyl compounds were low enough with the mean valves of 0.54 to 19.1 ppb. It was found that except for such industries as metal production or leather processing, their emissions were generally quite significant. If the measured values were evaluated in terms of malodor intensity, butyraldehyde appeared to be the most significant contributor to the malodor release. According to the measurements made in strong source areas, it can be concluded that several carbonyl compounds(acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde, isovaleraldehyde, and valeraldehyde) are useful enough to diagnose malodor release from those source areas. It should also be addressed that a number of carbonyl compounds added newly as the result of malodor control legislation were not sensitive enough to diagnose malodor release from such sources.

Maintenance systems are demanded to manage malodor-information and deal effectively with the odor-related civil complaints by constructing the database for sources of malodor compounds in real time. In this paper, to carry out these tasks, a real-time monitering system for malodor based on ubiquitous sensor networks(USN) is presented. The constructed monitering system stores the malodor data collected periodically from industrial complex into the database and shows in real time the circumstances of the odor sources being emitted around the industrial complex by indicating on the map where it is taking place. Besides, by clicking an icon indicating the sensor node on the map, we can figure out what firms are located near the malodor source and possible material related with those firms. The proposed system is considered to enhance the efficiency of management of malodor-emitting firms based on the malodor-related information.
Putrefactive activity within the oral cavity is the principal cause of halitosis. The most common intraoral sites of oral malodor production are tongue, interdental and subgingival areas. The other foci may include faulty restorations, sites of food impaction and abscesses. Periodontal disease frequently involves pathological oral malodor, which is caused mainly by volatile sulfur compounds(VSC), such as hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, and dimethyl sulfide. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the association between oral malodor and periodontal status. Volatile sulfur compounds in mouth air were estimated by portable sulfide monitor($Halimeter^{TM}$). The results were as follows : 1. The levels of volatile sulfur compounds were significantly greater in a periodontitis group than in a control group(P<0.01). The amounts of VSC in mouth air from patients with periodontal involvement were four times greater than those of the control group. 2. The significant positive correlation was found between VSC concentrations and the number of pocket depth above 4mm(P<0.01), but correlation between VSC concentrations and plaque score was not statistically significant(P>0.05). 3. In the periodontitis group, VSC concentrations of pre-treatment significantly decreased after scaling and root planing(P<0.01). 4. No statistically significant correlation was found between VSC concentrations and sex / age in the periodontitis group. The above results indicate that periodontal disease may play a role as an important factor of oral malodor and deep periodontal pockets are a source of volatile sulfur compounds.
It was confirmed that malodor connected with an air-conditioner in an automobile is caused by microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) produced by microorganisms getting into an air-conditioner when it is operating. Chemicals such as hydrogen sulfide, dimethyl sulfide, nbutyric acid, n-valeric acid, iso-valeric acid, n-octanol and toluene were detected above the odor threshold inside the automobile. The characteristics of a funky odor in the air blown into the automobile were due to detected sulfur compounds (hydrogen sulfide and dimethyl sulfide). Dimethyl sulfide was produced by microorganisms such as Aspergillus versicolor, Methylobacterium aquaticum, Herbaspirillum sp. and Acidovorax sp. In addition, the characteristics of a sour odor in the air blown into the automobile were due to detected organic acids (n-butyric acid, n-valeric acid and iso-valeric acid). N-valeric acid and iso-valeric acid were generated from Aspergillus versicolor, while iso-valeric acid was produced by Methylobacterium aquaticum. In addition, the odor intensity of the air blown into the automobile was affected by the concentration of detected sulfur compounds and organic acids. On the other hand, it is estimated that chemicals such as hydrogen sulfide, n-octanol and n-butyric acid detected in the air blown into the automobile were produced by non-identified species of microorganisms.
Considering various factors contributing oral malodor, the accurate prediction of prognosis is very important to both clinician and patients. The present study has been performed to invetigate the relationship between treatment effeicacy and pre-treatment volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) level. Ninety patients were divided into three groups, A(<150ppb), B(150< <200ppb), and C(>200ppb) groups, according to pre-treatment VSC level detected by Halimeter, and each group included 30 patients. Routine therapeutic measures for oral were provided to each patient which consisted of oral prophylaxis, tooth brushing and flossing instruction, tongue scraping by proper device, and gargling of 0.25% ZnCl2 Solution. The group with high pre-treatment VSC level (>150ppb) showed significant reduction of VSC level at 1 and 3 weeks after. However, the group with low pre-treatment VSC level (<150ppb) did not show any significant reduction during the experimental periods. Collectively, the results suggested that patients with high pre-treatment VSC level show better prognosis.

Objective: This study assessed five respective herbs in Cheonggugamrosu (CGGRS) for ability to inhibit malodor in vitro. Methods: We used malodor modeling of the salivary sediment system. Incubation mixtures were prepared with sediment at 16.7% (v/v), amino acids (cysteine and tryptophan) at 6mM and either herb extract at 1% (w/v) or water as control. Mixtures were incubated at $37^{\circ}C$ and odor was monitored organoleptically and for volatile sulfur compounds with the Halimeter. Indole/skatole was determined by Kovac's colorimetric method. Results: Two of the herbs, Caryophilli Flos and Glycyrrhizae Radix, had inhibitory effect on malodor generation. Both of them significantly reduced VSC, organoleptic odor and indole/skatole formation (p<0.05). Conclusions: We found Caryophilli Flos and Glycyrrhizae Radix played a main role in CGGRS. Both herbs have potential as effective anti-malodor agents and this suggests they are worthy of further exploration.
To explore the effective treatment methods for waste food generating malodor compounds, mixed microorganisms (MM) capable of deodorizing of domestic animal waste were applied using household composting box. The mixture of 5 kg whole chips as a bulk agent, 2 kg MM and 1 kg of waste food were input into the compost reactor and agitated. Waste food was supplemented every 24 hours. As the results, the composting volume was stable at 13∼14 L for 10 days. In the initial compost process with MM, the pH and temperature were increased more quickly than that of without MM. Also, the conductivity recognized as a barometer of compost was increased from 0.2 to 2.4 mS/cm that was higher than 1.3 mS/cm of without MM, for 10 days. The malodor compounds generated from waste food treatment such as sulfur compounds and volatile fatty acids were effectively reduced about 90∼l00%, and 70∼80% for 8 days, respectively. The microorganisms growing under the condition of alkaline phase and higher temperature were dominated during the compost Moreover, it was demonstrated that inoculated Bacillus cereus HY15 dominated during the compost results in responsible to the effective treatment of waste food.

In order to investigate the amount of oral malodor of denture wearers, concentration of volatile sulfur compounds of 20 denture wearers(10 male, 10 female) was measured by Halimeter(RH-17, Interscan, CA, USA) at following four conditions ; condition 1(with denture) : male - $415.0{\pm}90.1$, female - $430.9{\pm}101.3$ condition 2(immediately after denture removal) : male - $291.4{\pm}35.5$, female - $259.8{\pm}20.4$ condition 3(with denture after 30 minutes immersing in chlorhexidine) :male - $210.1{\pm}25.7$, 여자 - $197.4{\pm}22.2$ condition 4(with denture after 24 hours immersing in chlorhexidine) : male - $120.1{\pm}35.2$, 여자 - $109.2{\pm}20.0$ There was no sexual difference, but, value at the condition 1 showed statistically significant difference from the others(p<0.05). It is dentists' responsibility and privilege to understand and diagnose the strong association between mouth and oral malodor and treat it.
Halitosis, defined as an unpleasant oral odor, is a commonly experienced condition with a variety of etiological factors and may cause a significant social or psychological handicap to those suffering from it, In most cases, halitosis originates within the oral cavity itself and patients with periodontal disease often suffer from oral malodor, The most common cause of this disease is related to microbiota which reside on the tongue and in the periodontal pocket, This study was undertaken to examine the effect of full mouth disinfection including tongue scraping on oral malodor in a group of patients with chronic periodontitis, The relationship between halitosis and oral health status was also investigated, The volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) scores were significantly correlated with Plaque Index, Bleeding Index, pocket depth, and tongue coating score, The organoleptic ratings were significantly associated with Plaque Index, Bleeding Index. and tongue coating score, The VSC scores and organoleptic ratings correlated strongly with each other. Full mouth disinfection resulted in a significant reduction in the VSC scores. organoleptic ratings, and self-perception of malodor up to 12 weeks, This study indicates that in patients with chronic periodontitis. a full mouth disinfection including tongue scraping has a significant effect in the treatment of oral malodor.
