The study on the major insect pests community of Hibiscus syriacus. There were three orders, seven families, and thirteen species of insects harmful to H. syriacus. When the harmful insects eating H. syriacus were classified according to which part of the flower they were eating, insects eating leaves, which considered of nine species four families and one order, accounted for 69.23 %. Insects sucking juice from leaves and stems comprised 15.38 %, with two species two families and two orders, while insects eating seeds comprised 15.38 %, with two species two families and two orders. Aphis gossypii appeared once per H. syriacus from the fourth week of April to the second week of June, appearing the most at a rate of 69.05 per H. syriacus during the first week of May. Dichocrocis surusalis appeared at a rate of 0.05 per H. syriacus during the third week of April and regularly appeared from the first week of July to the second week of September. Nortacha derogata appeared at a rate of 0.1 per tree during the first week of May, after which it continuously appeared until the third week of October. Anomis privata appeared at a rate of 0.05 per tree during the first week of May and continuously occurred from the fourth week of June to the fourth week of October. Its occurrence was most frequent at 2.30 per tree during the third week of September.

A decrease in pass ratio of Korean exporting pears causes several negative effects including an increase in pesticide dependency. In this study, we attempted to establish the pest forecasting management system, composed of weekly field forecasting by pear farmers, meteorological data obtained by automatic weather station (AWS), newly designed internet web page ($\underline{http://pearpest.jnu.ac.kr/}$) as information collecting and providing ground, and information providing service. The weekly field forecasting information on major pear diseases and pests was collected from the forecasting team composed of five team leaders from each pear exporting complex. Further, an abridged weather information for the prediction of an infestation of major disease (pear scab) and pest (pear psylla and scale species) was obtained from an AWS installed at Bonghwang in Naju City. Such information was then promptly uploaded on the web page and also publicized to the pear famers specializing in export. We hope this pest forecasting management system increases the pass ratio of Korean exporting pears throughout establishment of famer-oriented forecasting, inspiring famers' effort for the prevention and forecasting of diseases and pests occurring at pear orchards.
This study was carried out to investigate the quality of soil, irrigation water, and status of agrochemicals application in relation to good agriculture practices system in the major cultivation area of Disocorea batatas. The concentrations of heavy metals as Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn in soils and irrigation waters were lower than those of standard level for Environmental Conservation Act of Soil and Water in Korea. The dominant weed have been appeared Digitaria sanguinalis and Portulaca oleraceamite. The dominant insect pests and plant pathogens have been appeared aphid and anthracnose. Average yearly application of pesticide was 2 to 4 times for herbicide and 4 to 6 times for plant pathogens and insect pests. In order to safety production of medicinal crops could be achieved by proper cultivation management such as minimum application of agro-chemicals, effective use of by-product fertilizer, and technology development of organic farming.
To develop a natural fungicide against Botrytis cinerea and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, a total of 25 essential oils were tested for their fumigant activity against post-harvest pathogens. The vaporous phases of oils were treated to each fungus on potato dextrose agar medium in half-plate separated Petri plates at $10\;{\mu}g$ per plate. The essential oil of Illicium verum strongly inhibited the mycelial growth of both B. cinerea and C. gloeosporioides by over 90%. On the other hand, the essential oil of Schizonepeta tenuifolia showed inhibitory activity against mycelial growth of only B. cinerea by over 90%. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and bioassay indicated trans-anethole in I. verum and menthone in S. tenuifolia as a major antifungal constituent. The essential oils of I. verum and S. tenuifolia and their major constituents could be used to manage post-harvest diseases caused by B. cinerea and C. gloeosporioides.

Experiments were conducted to study the integrated control of one of the major pests of citrus, the citrus red mite, Panonychus citri (McGregor). Studies were conducted in Seogwipo, Cheju Island, 1973-1976. Results obtained were: 1. The major peak of citrus red mite occurrence was mid-July to mid-August. 2. Standard field populations of citrus red mite were also high in September, October, and November. 3. A total of 10 species of natural enemies of citrus red mite were found. These included; Oligota yasumatusi Kistner, Anystis baccarum L., Hemerobiid sp., Semidalis albate E., Orius sp., Agistemus terminalis Q., 3 species of lady beetles (Coccinellidae), and one unidentified species of predacious mite. 4. Annual occurrence of citrus med mite tended to decrease in unsprayed fields, but increased in fields receiving standard treatments. 5. With fungicides, there was an increase in mite populations associated with use of Bordeaux mixture and copperpowder sprays. Streptomycin, however, did not effect on increase in mite numbers.
Plant essential oils (EOs) exhibit an array of biological activities against insect pests. However, their negative influences on the pheromonal activity of azuki bean beetle (ABB), Callosobruchus chinensis L. have not received research attentions. ABB is a field-to-storage pest of legumes, and its female produces the sex pheromone known as homofarnesal with two isomeric components: 2E- and 2Z-homofarnesal, (2E,6E)-7-ethyl-3,11-dimethyl-2,6,10-dodecatrienals and (2Z,6E)-7-ethyl-3,11-dimethyl-2,6,10-dodecatrienals. We evaluated the effects of three EOs and their two major components on the attractiveness of male ABBs to synthetic homofarnesal (2E-:2Z-homofarnesal = 6:4) using Y-tube olfactometry in laboratory and rocket traps in the semi-open polyhouse. Y-tube olfactometry showed the significant negative effect of EOs of Illicium verum, Croton anisatum at 10 and 100 ng, and Gaultheria fragrantissima at 100 ng against homofarnesal (100 ng) in attracting male ABBs. Similarly trans-anethole (at 10 and 100 ng) and methyl salicylate (at 100 ng) also ascertained significant negative effect against homofarnesal (100 ng) in Y-tube olfactometry. When 10 mg of each of trans-anethole and methyl salicylate was released at the downstream of 30 mg homofarnesal lure in rocket traps, highly significant effect was achieved against attractiveness of homofarnesal to ABB males. This study ascertained significant level of negative effect of the tested EOs and their major components to homofarnesal, tracing out a new opportunity of integrating them in ABB management programs both in field and storage.

Sampling plan using yellow sticky traps for the major strawberry flying pests - western flower thrips Frankliniella occidentalis adults, cotton aphid Aphis gossypii alate and greenhouse whitefly Trialeurodes vaporarium adults was developed to determine the initial occurrence time. The analyzed trap data were obtained from three commercial strawberry greenhouses for the whole growing season (September to May of the following year) during 2013 to 2017 in Jeju province. Three flying pests showed the aggregated distribution patterns resulted from commonly used regression techniques - Taylor's power law and Iwao's patchiness regression. Taylor's power law was better description of mean-variance relationship of the western flower thrips and the cotton aphid than Iwao's patchiness regression, otherwise greenhouse whitefly was better described by Iwao's patchiness regression. There were highly significant correlated among mean density per trap, maximum density and proportion of traps with more than 10 individuals. To estimate 4.0 heads of mean density per trap, the minimum number of traps were required 13 traps for western flower thrips, 11 traps for cotton aphid and 10 traps for greenhouse whitefly. The sequential sampling plans at the fixed precision level 0.25 were developed using parameters of Taylor's power law for western flower thrips and cotton aphid, and of Iwao's patchiness regression for greenhouse whitefly.
Biological-control-based-integrated-pest-management of major pests occurring on sweet pepper in greenhouse during summer season was tried. As many as 2.1 Orius laevigatus per $m^2$ were released in two times on June 6 and 19, and the population of thrips was kept under control and accordingly the damage was negligible throughout the season. To control aphids, a total of 0.8 Aphidius colemani per $m^2$ were released in four times, 0.2 of them at a time, flonicamid on May 14 and July 18 and pymetrozine on June 14 and September 4 were sprayed on the spots of high aphid occurrence to reduce the release of the wasp, and the density of aphids was kept under control. Whitefly was controlled successfully by releasing a total of 343.4 Amblyseius swirski per $m^2$ in nine times, 38.1 of them at a time, from May 9 until November 12 and dinotefuran was sprayed on November 12 when the density of whitefly increased up to 200 per trap. Tetranichus kanzawai was controlled by both Phytoseiulus persimilis which was released a total of 44.4 per $m^2$ in five times 8.9 of them at a time from May 23 to September 10, and the A. swirski which was released for the control of whitefly.
Road-map for the environmental friendly integrated pest management(IPM) of insect pests was drawn up on the strawberry vinyl-houses of farmer's field. Major insect pests were occurred Tetranychus urticae and Aphis gossypii during the strawberry plant seeding in the vinyl house and open field. Also, same insect pests were occurred in the vinyl house during harvesting season of strawberry. For the control of T. urticae and A. gossypii, Phytoseiulus persimilis and Aphidius colemani as natural enemies were input to the vinyl house, respectively. However, because these natural enemies could not control insect pest populations, acaricide and insecticide were sprayed. Then natural enemies were input again in the vinyl house. Natural enemies could not endure the intense cold and differences of temperature and relative humidity between day and night during strawberry harvesting season. So, their behavior and control activity of pests were more decrease than pests. Firstly, natural enemies are input in the vinyl house during the early breeding season of strawberry, secondly, acaricides and insecticide are sprayed for the control of mites and aphids, respectively, during the middle breeding season in the hard winter. Finally, natural enemies are re-input in the vinyl house during the middle and late breeding season.
Aphidius colemani and Orius laevigatus aree natural enemies of the control cotton aphid and western flower thrips, which are the major pests of cucumber plants. We evaluated the low toxicity of 47 fungicides against A. colemani and O. laevigatus, and we investigated the simultaneous effect of the natural enemies with fungicide of low toxicity on the pests. The toxicity of DBEDC, hexaconazole, pyraclostrobin, tribasic copper sulfate, triflumizole, chlorothalonil, flusilazole, folpet, carbendazim+diethofencarb, cymoxanil+fenamidone and trifloxystrobin to A. colemani mummies was more than 50% and to O. laevigatus was low toxic. Among the fungicides with low toxicity, azoxystrobin 20% WP was selected because it could be used simultaneously with A. colemani and O. laevigatus and as a fungicide to control powdery mildew and downy mildew. In 2011, the densities of western flower thrips and cotton aphid increased rapidly in early-May in Gongju and Cheonan, Chungnam Province. When azoxystrobin was used at an interval of 10 days in spring, A. colemani and O. laevigatus were released at an interval of 7 days at the early occurrence of the pests. The natural enemies decreased the densities of the pests; the maximum number of A. colemani mummies was 18 per lower leaf, and the maximum number of O. laevigatus was 0.5 per flower. Azoxystrobin did not influence the densities of A. colemani and O. laevigatus. The results show that the selected fungicides can be used with A. colemani and O. laevigatus for the intergrated pest management of cotton aphid and western flower thrips in cucumber polyvinyl house cultivation.
