The goal of this study is to investigate structural analysis and behaviors of an innovative aerial work platform truss frame whose ductility is improved by using high strength-steel UL-700. The present space truss frame can move or stop through tunnels for maintenance constructions by automatic facilities and workmanship within standardized limited building lines of tunnel. Most of all, this method overcomes problematic, which is to block cars during construction periods, seriously, of typical methods like as using truck and scaffolds for tunnel maintenance. According to evaluated appropriate design results of space truss frames of numerical examples by using a commercial MIDAS GEN program, it is verified that design parameters such as layered size, cross-sectional size, and steel material of the present space truss frame are determined to depend on characteristics such as lanes or shape of road tunnels.

The study of maintenance planning is important in military weapon systems because it can improve their availability and reduce the operational and maintenance cost during the total life cycle. In maintenance planning, it is important to determine the preventive maintenance task and its optimal interval. This paper focuses on the hard time task, which is one of the preventive maintenance tasks. A hard time task removes an item or restorative action before some specified maximum age limit to prevent functional failure. The Monte-Carlo simulation model was proposed to help understand the cost effectiveness of a hard time task. In the simulation, various shape parameters of the Weibull distribution and cost ratio of corrective maintenance to preventive maintenance were assumed. Using a Monte-Carlo simulation, a quantified cost saving effect and optimal preventive maintenance interval were suggested.

In the decision-making, such as selection of structure, construction method, or time and scheme of maintenance, the evaluation of life-cycle cost(LCC) is of great importance. The maintenance cost occupy a large portion of the LCC of the railway track as well as the initial construction cost. Futhermore, the proportion of the maintenance cost is much higher in the ballasted track. Thus, the importance of the LCC evaluation is higher than in any other engineering structures. In this study, a LCC model that can consider various design parameters such as the type of track structure, annual traffic volume, axle load, train speed, and proportion of curve sections and engineering structures has been developed. Fundamental data for calculating costs also have been presented. Based on the model and data proposed, the trends in the variation of LCC according to the design parameters were examined and the most important design parameters in the LCC analysis of railway track were investigated. The results show that the proportion of renewal and operational costs is much higher in the ballasted track than in the concrete track, and the annual traffic volume and ballast taming period are most significant factors on the LCC of the ballasted track. On the contrary, it is revealed that the proportion of the initial construction costs in the concrete track is much higher, and the LCC of the concrete track is less sensitive to the traffic volume, train speed, and axle load.
Performance assessment of pavements proves useful, in terms of handling the ride quality, controlling the travel time of vehicles and adequate maintenance of pavements. Roughness profiles provide a good measure of the deteriorating condition of the pavement. For the accurate estimates of pavement roughness from dynamic vehicle responses, vehicle parameters should be known accurately. Information on vehicle parameters is uncertain, due to the wear and tear over time. Hence, condition monitoring of pavement requires the identification of pavement roughness along with vehicle parameters. The present study proposes a scheme which estimates the roughness profile of the pavement with the use of accurate estimates of vehicle parameters computed in parallel. Pavement model used in this study is a two-layer Euler-Bernoulli beam resting on a nonlinear Pasternak foundation. The asphalt topping of the pavement in the top layer is modeled as viscoelastic, and the base course bottom layer is modeled as elastic. The viscoelastic response of the top layer is modeled with the help of the Burgers model. The vehicle model considered in this study is a half car model, fitted with accelerometers at specified points. The identification of the coupled system of vehicle-pavement interaction employs a coupled scheme of an unbiased minimum variance estimator and an optimization scheme. The partitioning of observed noisy quantities to be used in the two schemes is investigated in detail before the analysis. The unbiased minimum variance estimator (MVE) make use of a linear state-space formulation including roughness, to overcome the linearization difficulties as in conventional nonlinear filters. MVE gives estimates for the unknown input and fed into the optimization scheme to yield estimates of vehicle parameters. The issue of ill-posedness of the problem is dealt with by introducing a regularization equivalent term in the objective function, specifically where a large number of parameters are to be estimated. Effect of different objective functions is also studied. The outcome of this research is an overall measure of pavement condition.

The safety problem of aged tunnels has been emphasized. For the effective maintenance, site inspection of tunnel structures and surrounding grounds are required periodically. Also, the determination of safety of tunnels is not a simple problem. So the role experienced engineer in the maintenance is very important and development of an expert system that can perform as the engineers, has been needed. In this study, from the results of numerical analysis in several case, new precision inspection rules which can substitute actual numerical analysis are determined by a commercial program FLAC and regression analysis under various parameters such as material property, lining thickness, overburden and laterial coefficients. They are added to the knowledge base to determine safety of tunnel lining. To verify the expert system, the results are compared with an existing tunnel diagnosis report. It can be concluded that the new rule are well represented the actual numerical analysis under various site conditions. Therefore it is expected that the systematic management for effective maintenance of tunnel structure will be possible.

The maintenance of school building is pivotal issue. However, it is difficult to obtain basic analysis data for LCC(Lifecycle Cost) analysis and maintenance planning of school building. Therefore, this study proposed System Dynamics(SD) techniques to make maintenance decisions for school building. The interaction between the major parameters related to the aging of a building, maintenance activities, and cost were expressed in Causal Loop Diagram. Based on this, the formula for the relationship between causal maps was defined and converted to Stock and Flow Diagram. Through the completed SD model the 50-year plan of 214 educational building were tested by considered in account budget, maintainability, and budget allocation opinions. As a result, the integrated SD model demonstrated that it can support strategic decision making by identifying the status class and LCC behavior of school buildings by scenario. According to the scenario analysis, the rehabilitation action of preventive maintenance that primarily repairs the buildings in condition grade C showed the best performance improvement effect relative to the cost. Therefore, if the proposed SD model is expanded to consider the effects of other educational policies, the crucial performance improvement budget can be estimated in the long-term perspective.
Design and maintenance of large span roof structures require an analysis of their static and dynamic behavior depending on the physical parameters defining the structures. Therefore, it is highly desirable to estimate the parameters from observations of the system. In this paper we study the parameter estimation problem for damped shallow arches. We discuss both symmetric and non-symmetric shapes and loads, and provide theoretical and numerical studies of the model behavior. Our study of the behavior of such structures shows that it is greatly affected by the existence of critical parameters. A small change in such parameters causes a significant change in the model behavior. The presence of the critical parameters makes it challenging to obtain good estimation. We overcome this difficulty by presenting the Parameter Estimation Algorithm that identifies the unknown parameters sequentially. It is shown numerically that the algorithm achieves a successful parameter estimation for models defined by arbitrary parameters, including the critical ones.
Developing accurate prediction models for deterioration behavior represents a challenging but essential task in comprehensive Infrastructure Management Systems. The challenge may be a result of the lack of historical data, impact of unforeseen parameters, and/or the past repair/maintenance practices. These realities contribute heavily to the noticeable variability in deterioration behavior even among similar components. This paper introduces a novel approach to predict the deterioration of any infrastructure component. The approach is general as it fits any component, however the prediction is custom for a specific item to consider the inherent impacts of expected and unexpected parameters that affect its unique deterioration behavior.

This paper presents a statistical analysis of empirical fragility curves for bridge. The empirical fragility curves are developed utilizing bridge damage data obtained from the 1995 Hyogoken Nanbu(Kobe) earthquake. Two-parameter lognormal distribution functions are used to represent the fragility curves with the parameters estimated by the maximum likelihood method. This paper also presents methods of testing the goodness of fit of the fragility curves and estimating the confidence intervals of the two parameters(median and log-standard deviation) of the distribution. An analytical interpretation of randomness and uncertainty associated with the median is provided.
