Excessive stay cable vibrations can cause severe problems for cable-stayed bridges. In this paper a semiactive Magnetorheological (MR) damper is investigated to reduce cable vibrations. The control-oriented cable-damper model is first established; a computer simulation for the cable-damper system is carried out; and finally a MR damper is experimentally used to reduce the cable vibration in a laboratory environment using a semiactive control algorithm. Both the simulation and experimental results show that the semiactive MR damper achieves better control results than the corresponding passive damper.
MR(magnetorheological) devices for vehicle applications requires the consistent control performance and the reliable operation. However, the corrosion of iron particles consisting the MR fluid can significantly affect on MR properties. This paper presents an effect of the MR particle corrosion on the performance of MR fluids such as shear stress magnitude which is directly concerned with control performance. As a first step, MR particles are corroded by water-calcium chloride solution. The resulting MR particles are examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and their molar ratios are analyzed by the energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX). By dispersing the corroded MR particles into silicone oil, the corroded MR fluid is synthesized for evaluation of MR effect change. A rotational viscometer is adopted to measure shear stress magnitude. Finally, it is demonstrated how much the corrosion affect on performances by comparing the normal MR fluid to the corroded MR fluid, from which performance investigation of the MR devices containing the corroded MR particles will be studied in the second phase of this study.
Magnetorheological elastomer (MRE), a smart material, is an innovative material for base isolation system. It has magnetorheological (MR) effect that can control the stiffness in real-time. In this paper, a new hybrid base isolation system combining two electromagnetic closed circuits and the roller bearing is proposed. In the proposed system, the roller part can support the vertical load. Thus, the MRE part is free from the vertical load and can exhibit the maximum MR effect. The MRE magnetic loop is constructed in the free space of the roller bearing and forms a strong magnetic field. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed hybrid base isolation system, dynamic characteristic tests and performance evaluation were carried out. Dynamic characteristic tests were performed under the extensive range of strain of the MRE and the change of the applied current. Performance evaluation was carried out using the hybrid simulation under five earthquakes (i.e., El Centro, Kobe, Hachinohe, Northridge, and Loma Prieta). Especially, semi-active fuzzy control algorithm was applied and compared with passive type. From the performance evaluation, the comparison shows that the new hybrid base isolation system using fuzzy control algorithm is superior to passive type in reducing the acceleration and displacement responses of a target structure.
Magnetorheological (MR) fluids are capable of changing their rheological properties under the application of external fields. When MR fluids operate in the so-called squeeze mode, in which displacement levels are limited to a few millimetres but there are large forces, they have many potential applications in vibration isolation. This paper presents an experimental and a numerical investigation of the performance of an MR fluid under tensile and compressive loads and oscillatory squeeze-flow. The performance of the fluid was found to depend dramatically on the strain direction. The shape of the stress-strain hysteresis loops was affected by the strength of the applied field, particularly when the fluid was under tensile loading. In addition, the yield force of the fluid under the oscillatory squeeze-flow mode changed almost linearly with the applied electric or magnetic field. Finally, in order to shed further light on the mechanism of the MR fluid under squeeze operation, computational fluid dynamics analyses of non-Newtonian fluid behaviour using the Bingham-plastic model were carried out. The results confirmed superior fluid performance under compressive inputs.
Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) are a type of “smart” material, and their properties can be controlled rapidly and reversibly under the influence of an external stimulus. The application of an external magnetic field can change the shear modulus, hardness, and friction coefficient of MREs. The friction can cause vibration; moreover, the vibration can affect friction. The change of friction depends on the relative motion, normal force, roughness of the rubbing surfaces, material type, temperature, lubrication, relative humidity, and vibration condition. As MREs are a type of “smart material,” their friction coefficient can be reduced by applying an external magnetic field—the applications of this feature in engineering have been widely studied. However, the friction properties of MREs under vibration have not been tested to date. In this study, MRE samples and a reciprocating friction tester were fabricated. The friction coefficient was measured to evaluate the friction properties under various vibration conditions; subsequently, the wear depth and wear surface profile of the MRE were observed in order to evaluate the wear properties. The results show that the friction coefficient of the MREs decreased when a magnetic field was applied. Moreover, the friction coefficient decreased when the vibrational amplitudes increased. The wear depth of the MRE also decreased as the vibrational amplitudes increased.
This paper presents the materials analysis for combination of working modes of Magnetorheological (MR) damper. The materials were selected based on the optimum magnetic field strength at the effective areas in order to obtain a better design of MR damper. The design of electromagnetic circuit is one of the critical criteria in designing MR dampers besides the working mechanism and the types of MR damper. The increase in the magnetic field strength is an indication of the improvement in the damping performance of the MR damper. Eventually, the experimental test was performed under quasi-static loading to observe the performances of MR damper in shear mode, squeeze mode and mixed mode. The results showed that the increment of forces was obtained with the increased current due to higher magnetic flux density generated by electromagnetic coils. In general, it can be summarized that the combination of modes generates higher forces than single mode for the same experimental parameters throughout the study.

This paper focuses on the design of an intelligent control system. The used techniques are based on Neuro Fuzzy approaches applied to a magnetorheological damper in order to reduce the vibrations over footbridges; it has been applied to the Science Museum Footbridge of Valladolid, particularly. A model of the footbridge and of the damper has been built using different simulation tools, and a successful comparison with the real footbridge and the real damper has been carried out. This simulated model has allowed the reproduction of the behaviour of the footbridge and damper when a pedestrian walks across the footbridge. Once it is determined that the simulation results are similar to real data, the control system is introduced into the model. In this sense, different strategies based on Neuro Fuzzy systems have been studied. In fact, an ANFIS (Artificial Neuro Fuzzy Inference System) method has also been used, in addition to an alternative Neuro Fuzzy approach. Several trials have been carried out, using both techniques, obtaining satisfactory results after using these techniques.
Magnetorheological suspensions (MRSs) are smart materials that have the potential to revolutionize several industrial sectors because of their special rheological behaviors. In this paper, MRS, based on carbonyl iron (CI) microparticles that were dispersed in silicone oil with oleic acid, were prepared. We showed that the electroconductibility of MRS was significantly influenced by the intensity of the external magnetic field that was applied. The resistance value can vary from infinite to below $300{\Omega}$ after applying an external magnetic field. The results indicated that this MRS had the property of magnetic-field-tuned insulator to conductor transition. This system has potential applications in controllable MRS electrical devices.

This paper presents vehicle road test of a semi-active suspension system equipped with continuously controllable magnetorheological (MR) dampers. As a first step, front and rear MR dampers are designed and manufactured based on the optimized damping force levels and mechanical dimensions required for a commercial middle-sized passenger vehicle. After experimentally evaluating dynamic characteristics of the MR dampers, the test vehicle is prepared for road test by integrating current suppliers, real-time data acquisition system and numerous sensors such as accelerometer and gyroscope. Subsequently, the manufactured four MR dampers (two for front parts and two for rear parts) are incorporated with the test vehicle and a skyhook control algorithm is formulated and realized in the data acquisition system. In order to emphasize practical aspect of the proposed MR suspension system, road tests are undertaken on proving grounds: bump and paved roads. The control responses are evaluated in both time and frequency domains by activating the MR dampers.
