  • We investigated the origin of magnetic behaviors induced by an asymmetric spin exchange interaction in Fe-site engineered lead iron niobate [Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3, PFN], which exhibits a room-temperature multiferroicity. The magnitude of spin exchange interaction was regulated by the introduced transition metals with a distinct Bohr magneton, i.e., Cr, Co, and Ni. All compositions were found to have a single-phase perovskite structure keeping their ferroelectric order except for Cr introduction. We discovered that the incorporation of each transition metal imposes a distinct magnetic behavior on the lead iron niobate system; antiferro-, hard ferro-, and soft ferromagnetism for Cr, Co, and Ni, respectively. This indicates that orbital occupancy and interatomic distance play key roles in the determination of magnetic behavior rather than the magnitude of the individual Bohr magneton. Further investigations are planned, such as X-ray absorption spectroscopy, to clarify the origin of magnetic properties in this system.

  • $SO_2$and CO gas removal characteristics of a wire-to-cylinder type nonthermal discharge plasma reactor in various applied voltage (-dc, ac, fast rising pulse and high frequency pulse) and a crossed dc magnetic field have been investigated. The experiment has been emphasized on the oxidizing characteristics of $SO_2$ and CO gas by $O_3$ and the applying of a crossed magnetic field, which would induce the cyclotronic and drift motions of electrons making the residual time longer in the removal airgap space. And it also would enhance the energy of electrons and the electrophysicochemical actions to remove the pollutant gases effectively. It is found thatthe corona onset voltage and the breakdown voltage were decreased with increasing the crossed magnetic field and decrease initial fed $SO_2$and CO concentration. As a result, a higher ozone generation and $SO_2$ and CO gas removal rate of 20[%] can be obtained with -dc, ac and fast rising pulse corona discharges in the crossed dc current-induced magnetic field. But high frequency pulse didn't show effect in applying of a crossed magnetic field.

  • Because of the continuous growth of energy consumption and also the tendency to site power lines and pipelines along the same route, the close proximity of power lines and buried metallic pipelines has become more and more frequent. Therefore there has been and still is a slowing concern about possible hazards resulting from the influence of power lines on metallic pipelines. Underground pipelines that run parallel to or in close proximity to power lines are subjected to induced voltages caused by the time-varying magnetic fields produced by the power line currents. The induced electro- motive force cause currents circulation in the pipeline and voltages between the pipeline and surrounding earth. This paper analyzes the induced voltage on the gas pipelines buried in parallel with 22.9kV distribution lines. Their magnitude depends on the length of parallelism and on the distance between distribution lines and pipeline.

  • In this article, entropy generation on MHD Williamson nanofluid over a porous shrinking sheet has been analyzed. Nonlinear thermal radiation and chemical reaction effects are also taken into account with the help of energy and concentration equation. The fluid is electrically conducting by an external applied magnetic field while the induced magnetic field is assumed to be negligible due to small magnetic Reynolds number. The governing equations are first converted into the dimensionless expression with the help of similarity transformation variables. The solution of the highly nonlinear coupled ordinary differential equation has been obtained with the combination of Successive linearization method (SLM) and Chebyshev spectral collocation method. Influence of all the emerging parameters on entropy profile, temperature profile and concentration profile are plotted and discussed. Nusselt number and Sherwood number are also computed and analyzed. It is observed that entropy profile increases for all the physical parameters. Moreover, it is found that when the fluid depicts non-Newtonian (Williamson fluid) behavior then it causes reduction in the velocity of fluid, however, non-Newtonian behavior enhances the temperature and nanoparticle concentration profile.

  • Nondestructive testing (NDT) by using the electromagnetic methods are useful for detecting cracks on the surface and subsurface of the metal. However, when the material contains both ferromagnetic and paramagnetic materials, it is difficult for NDT to detect and analyze cracks using this method. In addition the existence of a partial ferromagnetic material can be incorrectly characterized as a crack in the several cases. On the other hand a large crack has sometimes been misunderstood as a partially magnetized region. Inconel 600 is an important material in atomic energy plant. A nickel film is coated when a crack a appears on an Inconel substrate. Cracks are difficult to detect on the combined material of an Inconel substrate with a nickel film, which are paramagnetic and ferromagnetic material respectively. In this paper, a scan type magnetic camera, which uses a complex induced current-magnetic flux leakage (CIC-MFL) method as a magnetic source and a linearly integrated Hall sensor array (LIHaS) on a wafer as the magnetic sensors, was examined for its ability to detect cracks on the combined material. The evaluation probability of a crack is discussed. In addition the detection probability of the minimum depth was reported.

  • In relation to a non-destructive evaluation of irradiation damage of micro-structure of interstitial, void and dislocation, the changes in the hysteresis loop and Barkhausen noise amplitude and the harmonics frequency due to neutron irradiation were measured and evaluated. The Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel of reactor pressure vessel was irradiated to a neutron fluence of $2.3\times10^{19}n/cm^2$ $(E\ge1MeV)$ at $288^{\circ}C.$The saturation magnetization of neutron irradiated metal did not change. Neutron irradiation caused the coercivity to increase, whereas susceptibility to decrease. The amplitude of Barkhausen noise parameters associated with the domain wall motion were decreased by neutron irradiation. The spectrum of Barkhausen noise was analyzed with an applied frequency of 4Hz and 8Hz, and a sampling time of 50 $\mu$ sec and 20 $\mu$ sec. The harmonic frequency of Joule effect shows 4Hz, 8Hz, 12Hz and 16Hz reflected from an unirradiated specimen. On the contrary, the harmonic frequency disappeared for the irradiated specimen. Harmonic frequency of induced voltage of sinusoidal magnetic field And Spectrum of Barkhausen noise on material is determined.

  • Analyses of the viscous and end effects on electromagnetic (EM) pumps of annular linear induction type for the sodium coolant circulation in Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactors have been carried out based on the MHD laminar flow analysis and the electromagnetic field theory. A one-dimensional MHD analysis for the liquid metal flowing through an annular channel has been performed on the basis of a simplified model of equivalent current sheets instead of three-phase currents in the discrete primary windings. The calculations show that the developed pressure difference resulted from electromagnetic and viscous forces in the liquid metal is expressed in terms of the slip, and that the viscous loss effects are negligible compared with electromagnetic driving forces except in the low-slip region where the pumps operate with very high flow velocities comparable with the synchronous velocity of the electromagnetic fields, which is not applicable to the practical EM pumps. A two-dimensional electromagnetic field analysis based on an equivalent current sheet model has found the vector potentials in closed form by means of the Fourier transform method. The resultant magnetic fields and driving forces exerted on the liquid metal reveal that the end effects due to finiteness of the pump length are formidable. In addition, a two-dimensional numerical analysis for vector potentials has been performed by the SOR iterative method on a realistic EM pump model with discretely-distributed currents in the primary windings. The numerical computations for the distributions of magnetic fields and developed pressure differences along the pump axial length also show considerable end effects at both inlet and outlet ends, especially at high flow velocities. Calculations of each magnetic force contribution indicate that the end effects are originated from the magnetic force caused by the induced current ( u x B ) generated by the liquid metal movement across the magnetic field rather than the one (E) produced by externally applied magnetic fields by three-phase winding currents. It is concluded that since the influences of the end effects in addition to viscous losses are extensive particularly in high-velocity operations of the EM pumps, it is necessary to find ways to suppress them, such as proper selection of the pump parameters and compensation of the end effects.

  • This paper deals with characteristics analysis of a permanent magnet (PM) linear generator using analytical methods for wave energy harvesting. The wave energy is carried out from the movement of a yo-yo system. A linear generator using permanent magnets to generate a magnetic force itself does not require a separate power supply and has the advantage of simple maintenance. In addition to the use of a rare earth, a permanent magnet having a high-energy density can be miniaturized and lightweight, and can obtain high energy-conversion efficiency. We derived magnetic field solutions produced by the permanent magnet and armature reaction based on 2D polar coordinates and magnetic vector potential. Induced voltage is obtained via arbitrary sinusoidal input. In addition, electrical parameters are obtained, such as back-EMF constant, resistance, and self- and mutual-winding inductances. The space harmonic method used in this paper is confirmed by comparing it with finite element method (FEM) results. These facilitate the characterization of the PM-type linear generator and provide a basis for comparative studies, design optimization, and machine dynamic modeling.

  • In this study, I presented power control unit with potential use in the magnetic stimulation of biological systems. The effect of the magnetic stimulation depends on the geometry and orientation of the induced electric field as well as on the current pulse waveform delivered by the stimulator coil. TMS is achieved from the outside of the head using pulses of electromagnetic field that induce an electric field in the brain. There are numerous possibities in the applications TMS, such as diagnosis and therapy through the brain stimulation. These factors are very important to define the equipment requirements and characteristics in that the topology of the power supply and the size and geometry of the coil. The proposed solution is the generation of current pulses with variable amplitude and duration, according to a user defined input. Another solution is the topology that uses elements to store and transfer energy from the power source to the load. In addition to proposed topology, an adequate control strategy and right set of the power circuit parameters made possible to obtain unipolar waves and bipolar waves.

  • This paper describes the design and analysis of vibration driven cylindric electromagnetic energy harvester. The proposed harvester consists with spring, coil and rear earth magnet. The design utilizes an electromagnetic transducer and its operating principle is based on the relative movement of a magnet pole with respect to a coil. In order to optimal design and analysis, ANSYS FEA (Finite Elements Analysis) and Matlab model were used to predict the magnetic filed density with vibration and the generated maximum output power with load resistance. The system was designed for 6 Hz of natural frequency and spring constant was 39.48 N/m between 2 mm and 6 mm of displacement in moving magnet. When moving magnet of system was oscillated, each model was obtained that induced voltage in the coil was generated 2.275 Vpp, 2.334 Vpp and 2.384 Vpp, respectively. Then maximum output powers of system at load resistance ($1303{\Omega}$) were generated $124.2{\sim}132.2\;{\mu}W$ during magnets input displacement of 3 mm and 6 Hz periodic oscillation.
