  • Magnetic properties by exchange biased perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in [Pd(0.8 nm)/Co(0.8 nm)]$_{5}$/FeMn(15 nm) multilayers deposited by dc magnetron sputtering system are investigated. As inserted Pd layer of interface between [Pd/Co] multilayer and FeMn film, the Hex of perpendicular anisotropy was improved from 127 Oe to 145 Oe. But result of an experiment by thermal stability, the Hex of the case that an inserted layer was inserted in decreased from low 20$0^{\circ}C$ in about 5$0^{\circ}C$ more if not inserted. If Ta was a buffer layer, the experiment results along material of buffer layer, the H$_{ex}$ obtained the largest 127 Oe. And if Pd was a buffer layer, H$_{ex}$ obtained the largest 169 Oe. Also, the Hc in buffer layer of Ta and Pd obtained the largest 203 Oe and 453 Oe, respectively.

  • Thin films of diamond-like carbon(DLC) have been deposited using a magnetron plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition(PECVD) method with an rf(13.56 MHz) plasma of $C_{3}H_{8}$. From the Langmuir probe I-V characteristics, it can be observed that increasing the magnetic field yields an increase of the temperature($T_e$) and density($N_e$) of electron. At a magnetic field of 82 Gauss, the estimated values of $T_e$ and $N_e$ are approximately $1.5\;{\times}\;10^5$ K(13.5 eV) and $1.3\;{\times}\;10^{11}\;cm^{-3}$, respectively. Such a highly dense plasma can be attributed to the enhanced ionization caused by the cyclotron motion of electrons in the presence of a magnetic field. On the other hand, the negative dc self-bias voltage($-V_{sb}$) decreases with an increasing magnetic field, which is irrespective of gas pressure in the range of $1{\sim}7$ mTorr. This result is well explained by a theoretical model considering the variation of $T_e$. Deposition rates of DLC films increases with a magnetic field. This may be due to the increased mean free path of electrons in the magnetron plasma. Structures of DLC films are examined by using various techniques such as FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. Most of hydrocarbon bonds in DLC films prepared consist of $sp^3$ tetrahedral bonds. Increasing the rf power leads to an enhancement of cross-linking of carbon atoms in DLC films. At approximately 140 W, the maximum film density obtained is about 2.4 $g/cm^3$.

  • To find out whether isotropic magnetic bubble propagation can be achived by changing magnetostriction coefficients, bias margins and bubble collapse fields of $2.5{\mu}m$ period "diamond" bubble propagation tracks were measured which were fabricated on three magnetic garnet thin films with nearly isotropic magnetostriction coefficients (${\lambda}111{\simeq}{\lambda}100$). The results showed substantially isotropic bubble propagation in "super","good" and "bad" tracks for all three garnet films. From the bubble collapse fields, the bubble potential well depths vs. the direction of the in-plane rotating magnetic fields were plotted. The results showed that substantial differances in the potential well shapes exist for the three "good," "bad" and "super" tracks when ${\Delta}(=({\lambda}111-{\lambda}100)/{\lambda}100)$ was 0.5 (film AK92). However, the differences were minimal when ${\Delta}$ were 0.3 (film Aka8) or 0.1 (film AKb1). In other words, the bubble potential wells were nearly isotropic. The above two measurements indicate that nearly isotropic bubble propagation can be achieved when B is between 0.1 and 0.3.

  • To develop the highly sensitive Magneto-Impedance sensor, the amorphous ribbon was micro-processed to meander type sensor pattern, and its external magnetic field dependence of impedance was investigated. The impedance of the pattern had peak value at the magnetic field of 13 Oe and its changing ratio was about 170%. The impedance change per unit magnetic field was about 36% at bias field of 6 Oe, in which the output with high sensitivity and linearity could be obtained. The magnetic field resolution of the sensor module, which consist of the amorphous pattern and driving circuit, was about $10^{-3}$ Oe.

  • Safety of large scale cable in bridge is very important because it may cause the unwanted catastrophic failure. Although the proof load were considered at the design stage, its soundness must be monitored continuously because the cable may be broken out without warning by the variable external load. The cable tension of in-use structures has been mainly measured by the resonance method and its use has been limited because of relatively large measurement uncertainty. Recently a new magnetic method was developed and its reliability is known to be good for evaluating the cable tension. In this study a system which can deliver the calibrated load to the cable was developed and the measurement reliability of developed magnetic sensor according to the change of external load was analyzed quantitatively. The effect of magnetization frequency, bias magnetic field, and temperature on the sensor output was also evaluated.

  • We analyzed the angular dependence of ferromagnetic resonance linewidth in exchange coupled CoFe/MnIr bilayers. The maximum and minimum linewidth was observed in the easy and hard direction of unidirectional anisotropy by exchange coupling, respectively, and it was well agreed with the angular dependence of exchange bias field. The maximum linewidth was due to the twist of CoFe magnetization near CoFe/MnIr interface from direction of pinned MnIr spin to direction of applied magnetic field. While, minimum linewidth more higher than that of CoFe was related to rotatable anisotropy field, and explained by easy axis distribution of MnIr grains.

  • Controlling and sensing spin states of magnetic molecules such as metallo-porphyrins at the single molecule level is essential for spintronic molecular device applications. Axial coordinations of diatomic molecules to metallo-porphyrins also play key roles in dynamic processes of biological functions such as blood pressure control and immune response. However, probing such reactions at the single molecule level to understand their physical mechanisms has been rarely performed. Here we present on our single molecule association and dissociation experiments between diatomic and metallo-porphyrin molecules on Au(111) describing its adsorption structures, spin states, and dissociation mechanisms. We observed bright ring shapes in NO adsorbed metallo-porphyrin compelxes and explained them by considering tilted binding and precession motion of NO. Before NO exposure, Co-porphryin showed a clear zero-bias peak in scanning tunneling spectroscopy, a signature of Kondo effect in STS, whereas after NO exposures it formed a molecular complex, NO-Co-porphyrin, that did not show any zero-bias feature implying that the Kondo effect was switched off by binding of NO. Under tunneling junctions of scanning tunneling microscope, both positive and negative energy pulses. From the observed power law relations between dissociation rate and tunneling current, we argue that the dissociations were inelastically induced with molecular orbital resonances. Our study shows that single molecule association and dissociation can be used to probe spin states and reaction mechanisms in a variety of axial coordination between small molecules and metallo-porphyrins.

  • The coupling phenomenon between stress and magnetic induction, known as magnetostriction, has been successfully applied to generate and measure elastic waves. Most applications of this phenomenon thus far, however, are rather limited to cylindrical ferromagnetic waveguides. The main objective of this work is to develop a new patch-type, orientation-adjustable magnetostrictive transducer that is applicable for non-cylindrical, non-ferromagnetic waveguides. The existing patch-type transducer consisting of a ferromagnetic patch and a racetrack coil is useful to generate elastic waves only in one specific direction once the patch is bonded to a test specimen. However, the proposed transducer can transmit and receive elastic waves in any direction only with one patch at a given location. The proposed magnetostrictive transducer consists of a circular nickel patch, a figure-of-eight coil, and a couple of bias permanent magnets. Because of the unique configuration of the transducer, the propagating direction of the generated waves can be freely controlled since the set of bias magnets and the coil is not bonded to the magnetostrictive patch. In this work, the characteristics of the proposed transducer were investigated experimentally.

  • The tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) of a ramp-edge type junction with SrTiO$_3$barrier layer has been stud-ied. The samples with a structure of glass/NiO(600${\AA}$)/Co(100${\AA}$)/SrTiO$_3$(400 ${\AA}$)/SrTiO$_3$(20-100${\AA}$)/NiFe(100${\AA}$) were prepared by the sputtering and etched by the electron cyclotron (ECR) argon ion milling. Nonlinear I-V characteristics were obtained from a ramp-type tunneling junctions, having the dominant difference between two different external magnetic fields (${\pm}$100 Oe) perpendicular to the junction edge line. In the SrTiO$_3$ barrier thickness of 40${\AA}$, the TMR was 52.7% at a bias voltage of -50 mV The bias voltage dependence of resistance and TMR in a ramp-type tunneling junction was similar with those of the layered TMR junction.

  • TASS(Towed Array Sonar System) is a sonar system which tows the sensor array behind a platform. Array shape is generally assumed to be a straight line. But the array shape is often distorted by oceanic current or platform maneuvering which causes the performance loss of signal processing method like beamforming. So array shape estimation methods are needed. Typically the method based on Kalman filter using heading sensor is used. In practice, the measurement is corrupted by biases which are caused by rotation of the tow cable, varying magnetic fields and slowly varying stresses in the mechanical construction. Although they can't be calibrated but can be estimated. In this paper, we suggest the array shape estimation method based on Kalman filter compensating the sensor biases.
