  • A drum type of high gradient magnetic separator was designed and optimized by computer simulations. The magnetic separator consists of high performance rare earth $(Nd_2Fe_14B)$ permanent magnets and magnetic yokes of extremely low carbon steel interconnecting the permanent magnets. Magnetic circuits of the separator were simulated for the aim of the least cost, highest magnetic strength and most efficient function by using specialized S/W (Vector Field Program) employing the Finite Element Method. The magnetic flux density was provided to be strong enough to collect the invisible fine metal particles from the surface of hot rolled steel plate with the efficiency of almost 95%.

  • The oil-based magnetic fluids were prepared with synthesized ultrafine magnette by allowing surfactactants such as sodium oleate and aliquat 336 to adsorb on the surface of magnetite particles. The dispersion ratio of oil-based magnetic fluids was higher than 90% when the amount of sodium oleate and aliqua 336 were more than 2.63$\times$10-2 mol and 6.56$\times$10-3 mol for 20g of magnetite respectively. The dispersion ratio of oil-based magnetic fluids with the amount of secondary surfactant addition was higher than 90% when oil-based magnetic fluids were prepared with aliquat 336 of cationic type. However oil-based magnetic fluids prepared with surfactants of anionic and nonionic type showed lower dispersion than whose with cationic surfac-tants.

  • An internal finishing process by the application of magnetic abrasive machining has been developed as a new technology to obtain a fine inner surface of non-ferromagnetic pipe. In this paper, an abrasive slurry circulation system was designed and manufactured. As a result, it was found that a fine inner surface of pipe was available by the use of these machining methods. The basic machining characteristics of pin-type magnetic tools were analyzed experimentally. In addition, the experimental results show that pin-type magnetic tools have more machining efficiency than Iron particles as magnetic tools.

  • This paper has aims to share fundamental knowledge for magnetic abrasive polishing and to mainly introduce recent research results. In order to enhance a magnetic flux density for nonferrous materials, advanced magnetic abrasive polishing system which is called 2nd generation system was established by electro-magnet array table, and the effectiveness of the electromagnet array table was evaluated in real polishing experiments. To increase adhesiveness of the abrasives in high speed polishing, a silicone gel agent was proposed and carbon nanotube particles as new magnetic abrasives were applied in the magnetic abrasive polishing. In addition, a strategy for optimal step-over determination by heuristic algorithm was introduced for applying large size workpiece. Curved surfaces having a uniform radius were simulated and tested with installed electro-magnet array table.

  • Dust particles, which inflow to the subway mechanical ventilation and air conditioning(MVAC) chamber, contain a fair amount of iron compounds, approximately 25.2w/w%. This work attempted to capture those iron containing dust using magnetic filters. Average magnetization value of the test MVAC dust was 0.012 emu on 5,000 Oe, which could correspond sufficiently with the magnetic interaction. External permanent magnets provided with magnetization of iron mesh screen showing high gradient magnetic field(HGM). It resulted in the capture efficiency with 84.0 ~ 99.7% and 81.2 ~ 99.8% for $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ respectively. Magnetic capture was found to be closely associated with the magnetic intensity, mesh opening size and flow velocity.

  • Microcontamination caused by particle deposition on the head disk interface threatens the reliability of hard disk drive. Design of slider rail to control contamination becomes an important issue in magnetic recording. In this paper, how particles adhere to the slider and the disk is examined. To investigate accumulation mechanism of the particles, trajectory of the particles in a slider/disk interface is simulated with considering various forces including drag force, gravitational force, Saffman lift force, and electrostatic force. It is found that the charged particles can easily adhere to the slider or disk surface, if an electric field exists between the slider and the disk. It is supposed that the vertical motion of the particles should be related with not only Saffman force but also electrostatic force.

  • The EA.F. sleelmaking slag (slag that follow) of a cnmvany 1 Co.. containzd a simple substance of a metal, wustlte (FeO), magnetite (Fe,O,), gehlenite (CaAl,SiO,), monlicellite (CaMgSiO,), dc. To recovere a metal (Fe grade . t95%) in the slag, it is desirable that the particles of a metal are isolated from thc slag and madc for a liberated subslance. Then, the liberaled melal is easlly recoveled by a magnetic separation. If thc rcclarnalcd slag, the sizc of which ranges under 40 nun, have a mulli-stage crushing, the most of a metal in thc slag is simply isolaled as a liberated subslance. If the mad, lhat is a liberated subslance and a sphere, is recovered by a magnetic field intensity. the minimum intensity, at which a metal is attracted, is approximately IOOG and did no1 dcpcnd on the particle size of a metad in the same particles. TIe recovered material. that contdined a iron (Fe) over 95% is a metal which is crushed slag by l00G in the multi-stage. If the magnetic field intcns~ty increase, the recovery mcrcasc, but the concentration grade decrease Bewusc thc concentration eams more and more impurities, iron oxide and the coml~ound of alkali earth element. 'll~ercforc If the rccla~nated slag have the multi-stage crushing, the metal is almostly recovered in the crushed slag by lO0G on each particles. If the slag, used as a rcclamatian lhat is a amount of 350,000 tan from I Co., was undcr the multistage crushing and then separaled by 100gauss, it is possible to recova a metal approximately 2.500 Ion, lhat is 0.73% of n ~eclamated slag. in 304.7 mm particles and to recover 4.200 tan in 0.3-1.7 mm particles , that is 1.2% nf a rcclamated slag, in a year. Therefore, ihe told recoverable meld is 6,700 ton, that is 19% of a reclmated slag, in a year, too.

  • Physical characteristics of a magneto-rheological(MR) fluid can be influenced by a magnetic field. MR fluid is a suspension of micrometer-sized magnetic particles in a base liquid such as oil. Therefore, the key issue is dispersion stability because density of micrometer-sized magnetic particles are different from that of oil. In the present study, dispersion stability and physical characteristics along chemical compositions of MR fluid are investigated. 216 kinds of MR fluids are made by using magnetic powder(#2), surfactant(#2), base oil(#2), functional additive(#3), density(#3) and viscosity(#3). From experimental results, SEM photograph, magnetic flux density, supernatant and sediment of 216 kinds of MR fluids are obtained.

  • The materials showing high structure dispersion with functional properties were developed on the quartz base and those were obtained by mechano-chemical reaction technology. Depending on the processing conditions and subsequent applications the materials produced by mechano-chemical reaction show concurrently magnetic, dielectric and electrical properties. The obtained magnetic-electrical powders classified by aggregate complex of their features as segnetomagnetics, containing a dielectric material as a carrying nucleus, particularly the quartz on that surface one or more layers of different compounds were synthesized having thickness up to 10~50 nm showing magnetic, electrical properties and others. The similarity of the structure of surface layers of quartz particles subjected to mechano-chemical processing and nano-structure cluspol (clusters in a polymer matrics) material was also confirmed by the fact that the characteristics of ferromagnetic quartz of insulating nano-composite powder were changed with time, after its preparing process was completed. The magnetic permeability of the sample was decreasing within first two months down by 15~20 %. Then, the magnetic characteristics were almost stabilized steadily and continuously. The observed changes were related with defective structure of the particles, elastic stress relief, and changes of electron density and magnetic moment in deformation zones. This process of stabilization of the investigated properties could be intensified by the thermal annealing heat treatment in short time period of the nano-composite quartz powders at the temperature ranges of 100~15$0^{\circ}C$.

  • The dielectric breakdown voltage (DBV) is a measure of an insulating fluids ability to withstand a high electric field stress without breaking down. Conventionally, the presence of water or particulate matter in a dielectric fluid comprises the liquid's breakdown strength. However, the addition of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in the base oil can increase the dielectric breakdown voltage of the fluid reversely, if the condition of the added particles in the fluid is in balance with that of keeping down the initiation and propagation of electrical streamers. In this study, we developed a mathematical model by a set of coupled, nonlinear equations using the COMSOL multiphysics finite element simulation suite and calculated the dielectrophoretic activity of magnetic nanoparticles suspended in the presence of electric field, which is the behavior responsible for enhancing the dielectric characteristics of transformer oil, in order to examine how the activity differ in a transformer oil-based magnetic fluid.
