Flywheel energy storage systems (FESS) have advantages over other types of energy storage methods due to their infinite charge/discharge cycles and environmental friendliness. The system has two radial bearings and one hybrid-thrust bearing. Thrust hybrid-type bearing use permanent magnet to relieve gravity load. The radial bearings were designed to provide sufficient force slew rate considering the unbalance disturbance at the operating speeds. In this paper, we will derive dynamic model of hybrid-type bearing using permanent magnet for thrust bearing and present simulation and stability of the model.
The concept of structural vibration control is to absorb vibration energy of the structure by introducing auxiliary devices. Various types of structural vibration control theories and devices have been recently developed and introduced into mechanical systems. One of such devices is damper employing controllable fluids such as ElectroRheological (ER) or MagnetoRheological (MR) fluids. MagnetoRheological (MR) materials are suspensions of fine magnetizable ferromagnetic particles in a non-magnetic medium exhibiting controllable rheological behaviour in the presence of an applied magnetic field. This paper presents the modelling of an MRfluid damper. The damper model is developed based on Newtonian shear flow and Bingham plastic shear flow models. The geometric parameters are varied to get the optimised damper characteristics. The numerical analysis is carried out to estimate the damping coefficient and damping force. The analytical results are compared with the experimental results. The results confirm that MR damper is one of the most promising new semi-active devices for structural vibration control.
A Linear induction electromagnetic(EM) pump of liquid metal fast breeder reactor(LMFBR) is used for the purpose that the liquid metal of high temperature is transported by EM force. This paper evaluates magnetic flux density necessary for transporting liquid metal, using analytical model of the linear induction EM pump. Using the 2-D finite element method(2-D FEM), magnetic flux density is estimated in consideration of a geometric model, electric parameter, and velocity of liquid metal. From the viewpoint of hydrodynamics, the results can be used for flow analysis of the liquid metal.

This study aims to analyze the mechanical buckling behavior of a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) integrated with a one-parameter elastic medium and modeled as a Kerr-type foundation under a longitudinal magnetic field. The structure is considered homogeneous and therefore modeled utilizing the nonlocal first shear deformation theory (NL-FSDT). This model targets thin and thick structures and considers the effect of the transverse shear deformation and small-scale effect. The Kerr model describes the elastic matrix, which takes into account the transverse shear strain and normal pressure. Using the nonlocal elastic theory and taking into account the Lorentz magnetic force acquired from Maxwell relations, the stability equation for buckling analysis of a simply supported SWCNT under a longitudinal magnetic field is obtained. Moreover, the mechanical buckling load behavior with respect to the impacts of the magnetic field and the elastic medium parameters considering the nonlocal parameter, the rotary inertia, and transverse shear deformation was examined and discussed. This study showed useful results that can be used for the design of nano-transistors that use the buckling properties of single-wall carbon nanotubes(CNTs) due to the creation of the magnetic field effect.
Magnetostrictive materials have been used for linear actuators due to its large strain, large force output with moderate frequency band in the presence of magnetic field. However their performance analysis is difficult because of nonlinear material behaviors in terms of coupled strain-magnetic field dependence, nonlinear permeability, pre-stress dependence and hysteresis. This paper presents a finite element analysis technique for magnetostrictive linear actuator. To deal with coupled problems and nonlinear behaviors, a simple finite element approach is proposed, which is based on separate magnetic field calculation and displacement simulation. The finite element formulation and an in-house program development are illustrated, and a simulation model is made for a magnetostrictive linear actuator. The fabrication and performance test of the linear actuator are explained, and the performance comparison with simulation result is shown. Since this approach is simple, it can be applied for analyzing magnetostrictive underwater projectors and ultrasonic transducers.
This paper describes are quenching chambers of three type for Magnetic Switch and analyzes electromagnetic blowout force acting on the arc using 3D finite element method we make prototype device of each model and establish characteristics of arc quenching by measuring arcing time. This paper compares electromagnetic blowout to inverse arcing time. As the result this proposes the improving method for arc quen performance in DC magnetic switch.
A six DOF fine manipulator based on magnetic levitation is developed. Since most of magnetic levitation system are inherently unstable, a proposed magnetically levitated fine manipulator is implemented by use of an antagonistic structure to increase stability. From mathematical modeling and experiment, the equations of motion are derived. In addition, a six DOF sensing system is implemented by use of three 2-axis PSD sensors. A model reference-$H_{\infty}$ controller is applied to the system for the position control, In application of the fine manipulator, a wafer probing system is proposed to identify nonfunctional circuts. The probing system requires compliance to avoid destruction of DUT(device under test). A feedfor- ward-PD controllers are presented by the terms of the position accuracy, the settling time and the force accuracy.y.
In this paper, optimum shape design of permanent magnet in slotted type Permanent Magnet Linear Synchronous Motor(PMLSM) is progressed for minimization of detent force owing to structure of slot-teeth and thrust ripple by harmonic magnetic flux of permanent magnet. The characteristics of thrust and detent force computed by Finite element Analysis are acquired equal effect both skewed basic model and optimum model which is optimization of permanent magnet shape.
The following study carried out the characteristic analysis based on the magnet segment of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(IPMSM) for the urban railway vehicles. IPMSM affects the electromagnetic characteristics through the change in magnetic flux based on the rotor structure, and significantly influences the structural features through the change of pressure. Therefore, satisfied by the demanded traction force of the IPMSM, magnet segment derived three different model types. The 1-segment PM model consisted an undivided permanent magnet. The 2-Bridge model consisted a divided permanent magnet with the application of Bridge. The 3-Bridge model consisted additional dividing with one more Bridge applied. The electromagnetic characteristics of the three models were compared and analyzed along with the structural features regarding the scattering of permanent magnet based on strong centrifugal force from the rotation of the rotor at high speed. In conclusion, the final model with electromagnetic characteristics and structural features most suitable of IPMSM for the urban railway vehicles was derived, and the effectiveness was verified through the characteristic experiments after the production of the derived model.
To the optimization design of molded case circuit breakers(MCCBs), it is necessary and important to calculate the electro-dynamic repulsion force acting on the movable conductor. With 3-D finite element nonlinear analysis, according to the equations among current-magnetic field-repulsion force and taking into account the ferromagnet, contact bridge model is introduced to simulate the current constriction between contacts, so Lorentz and Holm force acting on the movable conductor and contact, respectively, can be integrated to calculate. Coupled with circuit equations, the opening time of movable contact also can be obtained using iteration with the restriction of contact force. Simulation and experiment for repulsion forte and opening time of five different configuration models have been investigated. The results indicate that the proposed method is effective and capable of evaluating new design of contact systems in MCCBs.
