  • A new magnetic field measuring system with induced coil is reported. This system consists of air-cared coil that is forced by the ultrasonic transducer. Induction voltage of coil is proportional to the DC magnetic field and the driving frequency of ultrasonic transducer by the principle of Faraday's law. The experimental measuring system is setup, and the possibility of a new magnetic field sensors is confirmed.

  • A great amount of effort has been devoted to the constant improvement of such basic performance as dirvability, safety and enviromental protection. As a result, the total combination of various technologies has made it possible to produce safer and more comfortable automobiles. Among these technologies, plasma and thin film techniques are mainly cocerned with sensors, optics, electronics and surface modification. This paper first describes a concept of thin film processing in materials synthesis for sensors based on particle-surface interaction during deposition to provide a long life sensor applicable to sutomobiles. Some examples of parctical application of thin films to sensors are then given. These include(1) a thin films strain gauge for gravity sensors, (2) a giant magneto resistance film for speen sensors, and (3) a Magneto-impedance sensors fordetection of low magnetic field. Further progress of sophisticated thin film technology must be considered in detail to explore advanced thin film materials science and to ensure the field reliability of future sensor devices for automobile.

  • To fabricate low field magnetic sensors using magnetoresistance(MR) effects, we deposited thin layers of $600{\AA}$ in thickness of Ni-Co(0.7Ni-0.3Co) alloy on slide glasses. In the layers we ordered 4 arms of the fullbridge sensors in the shape of grid structure to be inclined at an angle of $45^{\circ}$ to main axis and made the areal rate increase to 67%. While the response characteristics of the fabricated sensors had good linearity in the magnetic field of ${\pm}0.5mT$ ranges, the white noise was 0.2 nV and the voltage sensitivity was 7.6 $nV/{\mu}T$.

  • Fiber optic sensors (FOS) have advantages such as electromagnetic interference (EMI) immunity, corrosion resistance and multiplexing capability. For these reasons, they are widely used in various condition monitoring systems (CMS). This study investigated a muscular condition monitoring system using fiber optic sensors (FOS). Generally, sensors for monitoring the condition of the human body are based on electro-magnetic devices. However, such an electrical system has several weaknesses, including the potential for electro-magnetic interference and distortion. Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors overcome these weaknesses, along with simplifying the devices and increasing user convenience. To measure the level of muscle contraction and relaxation, which indicates the musle condition, a belt-shaped FBG sensor module that makes it possible to monitor the movement of muscles in the radial and circumferential directions was fabricated in this study. In addition, a uniaxial tensile test was carried out in order to evaluate the applicability of this FBG sensor module. Based on the experimental results, a relationship was observed between the tensile stress and Bragg wavelength of the FBG sensors, which revealed the possibility of fabricating a muscular condition monitoring system based on FBG sensors.

  • In recent studies, many methods have been studied for mobile robot using magnetic markers on its pathway. This is not influenced by the weather conditions, and makes possible to develop controller with low level processors and simple algorithms. However, the interval between magnets is restricted by the magnetic field intensity and it is impossible to get road information ahead. This paper suggests a method of widening markers and expressing the road information ahead using magnetic markers, and explains a sensor arrangement considering suggested methods. Also, magnetic field analysis was done to investigate the effects of widening magnetic markers with various environments. A small mobile robot was made to figure out the performance of suggested methods, and driving experiments were performed on the straight and curved road with magnetic markers. The results show that the robot moved the prearranged pathway with 0.5 cm lateral displacements and stopped at a stop line using magnetic information on the road.

  • The magnetic field standards, facilities and capabilities available at NPL for the calibration of magnetometers and gradiometers and the measurement of the magnetic properties of materials will be introduced. The details of the low magnetic field facility will be explained and the capabilities this facility enables for the characterisation and calibration of ultra-sensitive room temperature magnetic sensors will be presented. Building on core material capabilities that are compliant with the IEC 60404 series of written standards, the example of a standard permeameter that has been modified for the measurement of strips for real world conditions is discussed. This was incorporated into a stress machine to measure the DC properties of the soft magnetic materials used by the partners of a collaborative industry led R&D project at stress levels of up to 700 MPa. The results for three materials are presented and the changes in the properties with applied stress compared to establish which material exhibits favourable properties.

  • Most of the indoor positioning algorithms based on magnetic data mainly focus on reducing the accumulated error of the odometry data, such as signals produced by the inertial sensors. However, in most cases such as positioning by using smartphones in the indoor environment, those approaches seem unfeasible due to the absence of the inertial sensors. Thus, in this paper, we try to study a positioning algorithm exclusively based on the magnetic data. We refer to some thinking from the steps of Particle Filter and conduct an experiment to verify the application of the new algorithm. Besides, we use the variance of the result of the previous step to decrease the area to be matched in the next step, intending to improve the accuracy of the results. The result of the experiment shows that the new algorithm has a high probability to match with accuracy less than 2 meters in a 24 meters by 2.6 meters corridor.

  • An impeller identification technique that is essential for adding viscosity measurement functions to overhead stirrers is presented in this study. Previous studies have revealed that using magnets facing the same poles arranged in a row can aid in distinguishing the types of impellers by detecting the number of magnets in a non-contact manner. However, as these previous studies measured the magnetic fields using analog Hall sensors, a converting circuit for the digital signals is required that can interface with the MCU. In this study, it was demonstrated that the number of magnets can be distinguished without using a separate conversion circuit by using a Hall sensor with a digital output. Owing to the unique hysteresis characteristics of digital Hall sensors, it was confirmed through experiments that the complex and diverse outputs appear depending on the direction of the magnetic field, the arrangement of magnetic poles, and the moving direction of the magnet. The measurement of the magnetic field showed that an edge signal equal to the number of magnets inserted into the impeller was detected when the radial direction was used, and the south pole was first approached.
