  • In this paper, load monitoring technologies using U-shape Magnetoelastic (EM or ME) sensors have been exploited systemically for the first time. The steel rod to be tested is the Japan 7 mm piano steel rod. The load dependence of the magnetic properties of the piano steel rod was manifested. Two experimental designs of U-shape magnetoelastic sensors were introduced, one with double pick-up concentric coils wound on the rod to be tested, the other with pick-up coil on one yoke foot. The former design is used to derive the correlation of the relative permeability with elastic tension, while the latter is aimed to reflect the stress induced magnetic flux variation along the magnetic circuit. Magnetostatic simulations provide interpretations for the yoke foot sensing technology. Tests with double pick-up coils indicate that under proper working points (primary voltages), the relative permeability varies linearly with the axial load for the Japan 7 mm piano steel rod. Tests with pick-up coil on the yoke foot show that the integrated sensing voltage changes quadratically with the load, and error is more acceptable when the working point is high enough.

  • Cantilever-shaped lateral field emitters were fabricated and their electrical characteristics were tested. As shown in Fig.1, poly-silicon cantilevers were fabricated by the surface micromachining and they were used to the vacuum magnetic field sensors. The tunneling devices were vacuum sealed with the tubeless packaging method, as shown in Fig.2 and Fig.3. The soda-lime glasses were used for better encapsulation, so the sputtered silicon and the glass layers on the soda-lime glasses were bonded together at 1x10$^{-6}$ Torr. The getter was activated after the vacuum sealing fur the stable emissions. The devices were tested outside of the vacuum chamber. Through vacuum packaging, the tunneling sensors can be utilized. Fig.4 shows that the sensor operates with the switching of the magnetic field. When the magnetic field was applied to the device, the anode currents were varied by the Lorentz force. The difference of anode currents can be varied with the strength of the applied magnetic field.

The system for measuring the properties of AC magnetic field sensors consist of 3-axis helmholtz coil, signal generator, signal amplifier, sensor data acquisition unit and AC magnetic field sensor property measurement & analysis equipment including the operating software. By using this system, we can measure various properties of AC magnetic field sensor such as sensitivity, linearity and dynamic response in the frequency from 1 Hz to 10 kHz. Finally we also verified its performance by measuring the property of a MAG 639, standard magnetic field sensor of bartington instruments, with the developed measurement system.

  • This paper describes a development of magnetic tomography system using two poles perpendicular magnetic field. In the system, the relative permeabilities of the object are detected by Hall sensors located along with tube circumference. The signals according to the size and position of the object could be separated in case the relative permeability of the object are over 10. Moreover, the size and location of the object could be determined in real time.

  • The measurement of external magnetic field orientation using Giant Magneto Impedance (GMI) sensors has been performed. A soft magnetic alloy of $Co_{30}Fe_{34}Ni_{36}$ was electroplated on a Si wafer with a CoFeNi seed layer. V-shaped microwire patterns were formed using a conventional photolithography process. An external magnetic field was generated by a rectangular AlNiCo permanent magnet. The reference direction was defined as the external magnetic field direction oriented in the middle of 2 GMI devices. As the orientation of the magnetic field deviated from the reference direction, variation in the field component along each device introduced voltage changes. It was found that, by taking the voltage difference between the left and right arms of the Vshaped device, the nonlinearity of each device could be significantly reduced. The fabricated angle sensor had a linear range of approximately $70^{\circ}$ and an overall sensitivity of approximately 10 mV.

  • The attitude information of spacecraft can be obtained by the sensors attached to it using a star tracker, three-axis magnetometer, three-axis gyroscope, and a global positioning signal receiver. By using these sensors, the spacecraft can be maneuvered by actuators that generate torques. In particular, electromagnetic-torque bars can be used for attitude control and as a momentum-canceling instrument. The spacecraft momentum can be created by the current through the electrical circuits and coils. Thus, the current around the electromagnetic-torque bars is a critical factor for precisely controlling the spacecraft. In connection with these concerns, a solar-cell array can be considered to prevent generation of a magnetic dipole moment because the solar-cell array can introduce a large amount of current through the electrical wires. The maximum value of a magnetic dipole moment that cannot affect precise control is $0.25A{\cdot}m^2$, which takes into account the current that flows through the reaction-wheel assembly and the magnetic-torque current. In this study, we designed a 300-W solar cell array and presented an optimal wire-routing method to minimize the magnetic dipole moment for space applications. We verified our proposed method by simulation.

  • For monitoring of railway structures, optical fiber sensors are very convenient. The fiber sensors are very small and do not disturb the structural properties. They also have several merits such as electro-magnetic immunity, long signal transmission, good accuracy and multiplicity of one sensor line. Strain measurement technologies with fiber optic sensors have been investigated as a part of smart structure. In this paper, we investigated the possibilities of fiber optic sensor application to the monitoring of railway structures. We expect that the fiber optic sensors have much less noises than electrical strain gauges because of electro-magnetic immunity while railways operate electric power of 22000 volts. Fiber optic sensors showed good durability and long term stability for continuous monitoring of the railway structures as well as good response to the structural behaviors during construction.

  • There is great interest in developing magnetoresistance(MR) sensor, using ferromagnetic, electrically non-magnetic conducting and antiferromagnetic films, especially for the use in weak magnetic fields. Here, we report single and Wheatstone-bridge type of MR sensors made in Si(001)/NiO($300{\AA}$)/NiFe bilayers. Angular dependence of MR profiles was measured in Si(001)/NiO($300{\AA}$)/NiFe($450{\AA})$ films as a function of an angle between current and applied field direction, also, linearity was determined. AMR characteristics of single MR sensors was well explained with single domain model. Good linearity in $45^{\circ}$ Wheatstone-bridge type of MR sensors consisting of 4 single MR sensors made in Si(001)/NiO($300{\AA}$)/NiFe($450{\AA})$ was shown in the range of about ${\leq}{\pm}5$ Oe.
