  • Magnetization behavior of sputter-deposited Co/Pd multilayers were characterized, and it has been found that even when the multilayers are sputtered at low pressure (10 mTorr), the coercivity of the multilayers can be increased to large extent without noticeable change of saturation magnetization by increasing the deposition pressure of Pd underlayer. It turned out that the surface topology of Pd underlayer gets rough as deposition pressure increases, which consequently affects the magnetization reversal mode of Co/Pd multilayers from domain wall motion to magnetic spin rotation. The enhancement of coercivity is attributed to the domain wall pinning effect which is comected with the surface roughness of Pd underlayer on which Co/Pd multilayers grow.

  • The magneto-optical properties of Co/Co$_2$TiSn two-phase magnet films were studied. These films show that relatively large Kerr rotations which are -0.4 deg. at the wavelength of 400 nm, compared to that of pure Co. It is conceivable that the magneto-optical effects may be due to both contributions of ferromagnetic Co matrix and ferromagnetic Co$_2$TiSn Heusler alloy precipitate. The perpendicular magnetization curve domonstrates a typical bubble domain hysteresis loop. the saturation magnetization change of the annealed film is less sensitive to temperature in the low temperature region and the Curie temperature of Co$_2$TiSn Heusler alloy precipitate is a little higher in the annealed film. These can be explained by the increase of the number of Co-Co exchange interaction in Heusler alloy structure resulting from the change of chemical ordering by annealing.

  • Fe/Co and FeN/CoN multilayer films were prepared by using RF and DC magnetron sputter^ ing technique with Ar or a mixture of Ar and $N_{2}$ gas. Annealing treatment was carried out in a vacuum at temperatures between $100^{\circ}C$ and $500^{\circ}C$ for lhour. Saturation magnetization (MS) and coercivity (Hc) of Fe/Co mutilayer films were investigated as a function of Fe layer thickness and annealing temperature. Permeability ($\mu$) was also examined. Saturation magnetization of 1.8T and coercivity of 1.80e were obtained for the as-deposited Fe/Co($70 \AA /15 \AA$) multilayer film. The Coercivity(Hc) did not change from 1.8 Oe till the annealing temperature $250^{\circ}C$ and then increased rapidly at higher annealing temperatures above $300^{\circ}C$. Coercivity(Hc) measured for the as-deposited FeN/CoN multilayer film was 5 Oe. It decreased gradually with annealing up to $250^{\circ}C$, and then increased rapidly at higher tempera tures.

  • Microstructural and electromagnetic properties of YIG ferrites, (Y, Ca)-(Fe, V, In, Al)-O for Isolator/Circulator were investigated with the sintering temperature. YIG ferrites of $Y_{2.1}Ca_{0.9}Fe_{4.4}V_{0.5}In_{0.05}Al_{0.05}O_{12}$ were fabricated by sintering at $1300^{\circ}C$, $1330^{\circ}C$, $1350^{\circ}C$, $1370^{\circ}C$. Crystallographic and microstructural properties were measured using XRD and SEM. Saturation magnetization$(4{\pi}M_s)$ were measured using VSM, and FMR(Ferromagnetic Resonance) experiment was conducted to measure ferromagnetic resonance line width$({\Delta}H)$. Microwave characteristics of YIG ferrites were measured using a Network Analyzer. The YIG ferrite of $Y_{2.1}Ca_{0.9}Fe_{4.4}V_{0.5}In_{0.05}Al_{0.05}O_{12}$, sintered at $1350^{\circ}C$, showed higher density, saturation magnetization and lower ferromagnetic resonance line width than those sintered at any other temperature.

  • The fault current limiting characteristics of a flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) according to fault angles were investigated. From the electrical equivalent circuit with the magnetization branch, the inner magnetic flux of this SFCL due to fault angles was induced and its effect on the limited fault current was analyzed. From the fault current limiting experiments, the exciting current, which described the saturation of the iron core, was calculated and its dependence on the fault angle was analyzed. Before the fault happened, the exciting current did not happen, that it kept zero value. However, after the fault happened, the exciting current flowed and, the exciting current in case of the additive polarity winding showed higher value than for the case of the subtractive polarity winding. The analysis results were compared with the experimental ones, and experimental results agreed with the analysis ones.

  • Purpose: With neurodegeneration, the signal intensity of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain increases. The objective of this study was to evaluate chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) signals with and without the contribution of CSF signals in elderly human brains using two different 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences Methods: Full CEST signals were acquired in ten subjects (Group I) with a three-dimensional (3D)-segmented gradient-echo echo-planar imaging (EPI) sequence and in ten other subjects (Group II) with a 3D gradient and spin-echo (GRASE) sequence using two different 3T MRI systems. The segmented tissue compartments of gray and white matter were used to mask the CSF signals in the full CEST images. Two sets of magnetization transfer ratio asymmetry (MTRasym) maps were obtained for each offset frequency in each subject with and without masking the CSF signals (masked and unmasked conditions, respectively) and later compared using paired t-tests. Results: The region-of-interest (ROI)-based analyses showed that the MTRasym values for both the 3D-segmented gradient-echo EPI and 3D GRASE sequences were altered under the masked condition compared with the unmasked condition at several ROIs and offset frequencies. Conclusions: Depending on the imaging sequence, the MTRasym values can be overestimated for some areas of the elderly human brain when CSF signals are unmasked. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a method to minimize this overestimation in the case of elderly patients.

  • The evaporation heat transfer and pressure drop of $CO_2$ in a small diameter tube was investigated experimentally. The experiments were conducted without oil in a closed refrigerant loop which was driven by a magnetic gear pump. The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable-speed pump, a mass flow meter, a pre-heater and evaporator(test section). The test section was made of a horizontal stainless steel tube with the inner diameter of 4.57 mm, and length of 4 m. The experiments were conducted at mass flux of 200 to 700 $kg/m^2s$, saturation temperature of $0^{\circ}C$ to $20^{\circ}C$, and heat flux of 10 to 20 $kW/m^2$ . The test results showed the evaporation heat transfer of $CO_2$ has great effect on more nucleate boiling than convective boiling. The evaporation heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ are highly dependent on the vapor quality, heat flux and saturation temperature. The evaporation pressure drop of C02 are highly dependent on the mass flux. In comparison with test results and existing correlations, correlations failed to predict the evaporation heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of $CO_2$, therefore, it is necessary to develop reliable and accurate predictions determining the evaporation heat transfer coefficient and friction pressure drop of $CO_2$ in a horizontal tube.

  • The magnetic properties of a series of both annealed (biaxially textured) and as-rolled (non-textured) Ni-xW alloy tapes with compositions x = 0,1,3, and 5 at.$\%$, were studied. Characterization methods included XRD analyses to investigate the biaxial cube texturing of the annealed Ni-W alloy tapes and studies of the magnetization M for both annealed and as-rolled Ni-W alloy tapes. Both the isothermal mass magnetizations M(H) of a series of samples at different fixed temperatures and M(T) in fixed field, employing a PPMS-9 (Quantum Design), were measured. The Ni-W alloys have shown much reduced ferromagnetism as W-content x increases. Both the saturation magnetization Msat and Curie temperature Tc decrease linearly with W-content x, and both Msat and Tc go to zero at critical concentration of Xc - 9.50 at. $\%$ W.

  • We have investigated the effects of post annealing on iron oxide nanoparticles synthesized by the novel hydrothermal synthesis method with the $FeSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$. To investigate the post annealing effect, the as-synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles were annealed at different temperatures in a vacuum chamber. The morphological, structural and magnetic properties of the iron oxide nanoparticles were investigated with high resolution X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Mossbauer spectroscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometer analysis. According to the XRD and HRTEM analysis results, as-synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles were only magnetite ($Fe_3O_4$) phase with face-centered cubic structure but post annealed iron oxide nanoparticles at $700^{\circ}C$ were mainly magnetite phase with trivial maghemite ($\gamma-Fe_2O_3$) phase which was induced in the post annealing treatment. The crystallinity of the iron oxide nanoparticles is enhanced by the post annealing treatment. The particle size of the as-synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles was about 5 nm and the particle shape was almost spherical. But the particle size of the post annealed iron oxide nanoparticles at $700^{\circ}C$ was around 25 nm and the particle shape was spherical and irregular. The as-synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles showed superparamagnetic behavior, but post annealed iron oxide nanoparticles at $700^{\circ}C$ did not show superparamagnetic behavior due to the increase of particle size by post annealing treatment. The saturation of magnetization of the as-synthesized nanoparticles, post annealed nanoparticles at $500^{\circ}C$, and post annealed nanoparticles at $700^{\circ}C$ was found to be 3.7 emu/g, 6.1 emu/g, and 7.5 emu/g, respectively. The much smaller saturation magnetization value than one of bulk magnetite can be attributed to spin disorder and/or spin canting, spin pinning at the nanoparticle surface.
