  • Recently, studies about application of magnesium alloy sheet to automotive bodies are on the increase. For application to automotive bodies, researches about characteristics of resistance spot welding of magnesium alloy sheet are essential. Electrode life of resistance spot welding of magnesium alloy is very short due to sticking of magnesium alloy to copper alloy electrode. To increase electrode life, most effective method is inserting cover plate between electrode and magnesium sheet. But application of cover plate to actual process is difficult and decreases welding productivity. Process tape supplied automatically as cover plate can minimize lose of productivity and increase welding quality. In this study, resistance spot welding of magnesium alloy is carried out with applying process tape. Acceptable welding current region according to electrode force and welding time is determined.

  • Magnesium (Mg) plays an essential role in physiological and metabolic reactions. Recently, there has been an increased interest in the role of Mg deficiency, particularly the relationship between serum Mg value and inflammatory response. This study was designed to determine the relationship between serum Mg deficiency with inflammatory response, electrolytes and hematological alteration over long-term periods. Sixteen male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups: control (n=8), and Mg deficiency group (MgD group, n=8). Chow and normal water (tap water) were regularly provided to the control group and Mg-depleted chow and third distilled water were regularly provided for 60 days to the MgD group. Body weights, Serum Mg, $K^+$, inorganic phosphorus (IP) and total iron binding capacity (TIBC) levels in the MgD group were lower than those of the control group (P<0.05). Granulocyte fraction and MCV, RDW and PDW levels were higher, whereas lymphocyte fraction, erythrocyte, hemoglobin and MCHC levels were lower in the MgD group than in the control group (P<0.05). MCP-1 and TNF-${\alpha}$ levels in the MgD group were greater than those of the control group (P<0.05). In conclusion, the results of the present study suggest that Mg deficiency over a long-term period had not altered total leukocyte concentration in the blood, but had detrimental effects, including disturbances of electrolytes balance, disturbance of iron indices, potential anemia and elevation of pro-inflammatory cytokine. However, further studies should be performed to determine the relationship between serum Mg deficiency and major organ damage or alteration.

  • Purpose:The pathophysiology of magnesium, the second highest common compound in humans, is still unclear, especially in preterm babies. We accessed the association between total magnesium (tMg), ionized Mg (iMg), and gestational age (GA) and that between serum magnesium (sMg) and intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in preterm babies. Methods:In all, 119 inborn preterm infants admitted between July 2006 and February 2008 were divided into the IVH group (19) and the control group (100) and were prospectively analyzed. TMg, iMg, pH, total calcium (tCa), and ionized Ca (iCa) levels were determined immediately after delivery or within 3 hours after birth, and their correlation with GA were investigated. Results:TMg was not correlated with GA, tCa, iCa, and pH. IMg was correlated with tMg (r=0.288, P=0.002) and iCa (r=0.212, P=0.021); however, it was not correlated with GA and pH. Mean GA and birth weight were significantly lower (P=0.002) and smaller (P=0.030) in the IVH group. Mean sMg was higher in the IVH group ($2.5{\pm}0.9mg/dL$) than in the control group ($2.1{\pm}0.6mg/dL$) (P=0.021). SMg was a risk factor even after logistic regression analysis (OR, 2.798; 95% C.I., 1.265-6.192; P=0.011). Conclusion:In less than 37-week-old preterm babies, tMg and iMg were similar, regardless of GA. High sMg may be a risk factor for IVH in premature babies, regardless of their exposure to antenatal magnesium.

  • Recovery component for cell division in UV-irradiated E. coli B was detected with use of the cell extract of E. coli B/r which is a resistant mutant of E. coli B against UV-irradiation. The active substance was non-dialyzable and increased the activity by adding B-NAD remarkably. One more factor for increasing or promoting the restoration recognized was magnesium. Magnesium was effective to stabilze the substance in procedure of isolation. Two active substances were obtained from sucrose gradient centrifugation. One of them was recovred from the botton area and the other from top area just below below surface. the former was not stabilized by magnesium, while the latter stabilized the activity by it remarkably. The former which did not require magnesium was insensitive to protease and the latter which required magnesium was sensitive to it. Both were insensitive to RNase and DNase. Recovery ratio was doubled by using nitrogen gas than aeration in purification process. DNA-ligase less mutant was revealed same activity on it's recovery ratio with the parent strain of E. coli K-12. The active substance stimulating the filament cell may exist as a complex which is inactivated easily in the dissociated state ana requrie B-NAD or magnesium.

  • Background: Surgeon satisfaction and patient analgesia during the procedure of laparoscopic surgery are important issues. The aim of this work was to study if an intrathecal (IT) Bupivacaine combined with Magnesium sulfate may or may not provide good surgeon satisfaction in addition to improvement of intraoperative and postoperative analgesia. Methods: Sixty female patients were enrolled in this prospective, randomized, double-blind controlled clinical trial study. All patients were operated for gynecological laparoscopic surgery under spinal anesthesia. Patients were divided into two groups (Bupivacaine and Magnesium). Group Bupivacaine (30 patients) received intrathecal Bupivacaine 0.5% only (15 mg), while 30 patients in group Magnesium received intrathecal Bupivacaine (15 mg) in addition to intrathecal Magnesium sulfate (50 mg). The sensory block level, the intensity of motor block, the surgeon satisfaction, the intraoperative visual analog scale (VAS) for pain assessment, the postoperative VAS, and side effects were recorded during the intraoperative period and within the first 24 hours after surgery in the post-anesthesia care unit. Results: Surgeon satisfaction, intraoperative shoulder pain, postoperative pain after 2 h, and perioperative analgesic consumption (ketorolac) were significant better in group Magnesium than in group Bupivacaine. (P < 0.05). The onset of motor and sensory blocks was significant longer in group Magnesium than the other one. The incidence of PONV, pruritus and urinary retention was insignificant statistically between both groups. Conclusions: Magnesium sulfate if used intrathecally as an adjuvant to Bupivacaine would provide a better surgeon satisfaction and would improve the analgesic effect of spinal anesthesia used for gynecological laparoscopic surgery.

  • Plasma electrolyte oxidation (PEO) surface treatment of magnesium alloy, an optical analysis method through reflection spectra were measured. As a result, the sample is formed on the membrane form of MgO or $Mg(OH)_2$ is in the form of oxide. The wavelength energy of surface treatment of magnesium alloy sample observed 0.23eV red shift. The measured reflectance spectra observed with the three different signals. This is due to $Mg(OH)_2$ oxide layer formed on porous hole.

  • Although magnesium has high potential for structural material due to the lightweight and high specific strength, the structural application has been limited by the low ductility at room temperature. The reason of the poor ductility is few activated slip systems of magnesium (HCP structure) during deformation. As temperature increases, however, additional non-basal slip systems are incorporated to exhibit higher ductility comparable to aluminum. In the present study, a series of tensile tests of Mg-Al alloy has been carried out to study deformation behavior with temperature variation. Analysis of load relaxation test results based on internal variable approach gave information about relationship between the micromechanical character and corresponding deformation behavior of magnesium. Especially, the material parameter, p representing dislocation permeability through barriers was altered from 0.1 to 0.15 as the non-basal slip systems were activated at high temperature.

  • Infrared has been used in determination of water in magnesium metaphosphate glasses. The method consisted of measuring the weight loss and the variation in absorption coefficient at 3, 200$cm^{-1}$. The molar absorptivity of water in magnesium metaphophate glasses was found to 76.9ι$mol^{-1} cm^{-1}$ Using the value for $\varepsilon$, A and Δ$\upsilon$H of the hydroxyl band in the spectra of magnesium metaphosphate. The molar absorptivity of the hydroxyl absorption band at 3, 3130-2, $925cm^{-1}$ in the spectra of MgO.$P_2O_5$ system glasses could be computed. And a variation of molar absorptivity against the MgO/P2O5 ratio has not been shown regulation.

  • In recent years, Magnesium(Mg) and its alloys have become a center of special interest in the automotive industry. Due to their high specific mechanical properties, they offer a significant weight saving potential in modern vehicle constructions. Most Mg alloys show very good machinability and processability, and even the most complicated die casting parts can be easily produced. In this study, Microstructure, Vickers hardness and tensile tests were examined and performed for each specimen to verify effects of forming conditions. Also to verify upsettability and forming limit of the specimen at room temperature and elevated temperature, upsetting experiments were performed. For comparison, experiments at elevated temperature were performed for various Mg alloy, such as AZ31, AZ91, and AM50. The experimental results were compared with those of CAE analysis to propose forming limit of Magnesium alloys.
