  • This paper presents an impact-based piezoelectric vibration energy harvester using a freely movable metal sphere and a piezoceramic fiber-based MFC (Macro Fiber Composite) as piezoelectric cantilever. The free motion of the metal sphere, which impacts both ends of the cavity in an aluminum housing, generates power across a cantilever-type MFC beam in response to low frequency vibration such as human-body-induced motion. Impacting force of the spherical proof mass is transformed into the vibration of the piezoelectric cantilever indirectly via the aluminum housing. A proof-of-concept energy harvesting device has been fabricated and tested. Effect of the indirect impact-based system has been tested and compared with the direct impact-based counterpart. Maximum peak-to-peak open circuit voltage of 39.8V and average power of $598.9{\mu}W$ have been obtained at 3g acceleration at 18Hz. Long-term reliability of the fabricated device has been verified by cyclic testing. For the improvement of output performance and reliability, various devices have been tested and compared. Using device fabricated with anodized aluminum housing, maximum peak-to-peak open-circuit voltage of 34.4V and average power of $372.8{\mu}W$ have been obtained at 3g excitation at 20Hz. In terms of reliability, housing with 0.5mm-thick steel plate and anodized aluminum gave improved results with reduced power reduction during initial phase of the cyclic testing.

  • Dynamic characteristics of smart hull structure are investigated and active vibration control performance is evaluated. Dynamic model of smart hull structure with surface bonded Macro-fiber Composite (MFC) actuators is established by analytical method. Equations of motion of the host hull structure are derived based on Donnell-Mushtari equilibrium equations for a thin cylindrical shell. A general model for the interaction between hull structure and MFC actuator is included in the dynamic model. Modal analysis is then conducted and mode shapes and corresponding natural frequencies are investigated. After constructing of the optimal control algorithm, active vibration control performance of the proposed system is evaluated. It has been shown that structural vibration can be reduced effectively with proper control input.

  • This paper is concerned with the active vibration control experiment on cylindrical shell equipped with Macro Fiber Composite(MFC) actuators. The MFC actuators were glued to the cylindrical shell in circumferential directions. To verify the theoretical result, vibration test using impact hammer and accelerometer was carried out. It was found from experiments that theoretical result predicts experimental result to some extent. The positive position feedback controllers were designed and applied to the test article. It was observed that the resonant amplitude of the fundamental mode was reduced by 20dB thus achieving active vibration control. The active vibration control of the response subject to non resonant excitation has been of interest. We developed the combination of the positive position feedback controller which can cope with the fundamental mode and the positive position feedback controller which can counteract the external disturbance with non resonant frequency. It was found from experiments that the hybrid controller can suppress the vibration amplitude successfully.

  • Novel design of interdigitated electrodes capable of increasing the performance of piezoelectric transducers are proposed. The new electrodes' geometry improve the electromechanical coupling by offering an enhanced adaptation of the electric field to the interdigitated electrode configuration. The proposed analysis is based on finite element modeling and takes into account local polarization effect. It is shown that the proposed electrodes considerably increase the strain generation compared to flat electrode arrangement used for Macro Fiber Composite (MFC) and Active Fiber Composite (AFC) actuators. Also, electric field singularities are reduced allowing better reliability of the transducer against electric failure.

  • This paper presents design optimization of a new Active Twist Rotor (ATR) blade and conducts its aeroelastic analysis in forward flight condition. In order to improve a twist actuation performance, the present ATR blade utilizes a single crystal piezoelectric fiber composite actuator and the blade cross-sectional layout is designed through an optimization procedure. The single crystal piezoelectric fiber composite actuator has excellent piezoelectric strain performance when compared with the previous piezoelectric fiber composites such as Active Fiber Composites (AFC) and Macro Fiber Composites (MFC). Further design optimization gives a cross-sectional layout that maximizes the static twist actuation while satisfying various blade design requirements. After the design optimization is completed successfully, an aeroelastic analysis of the present ATR blade in forward flight is conducted to confirm the efficiency in reducing the vibratory loads at both fixed- and rotating-systems. Numerical simulation shows that the present ATR blade utilizing single crystal piezoelectric fiber composites may reduce the vibratory loads significantly even with much lower input-voltage when compared with that used in the previous ATR blade. However, for an application of the present single crystal piezoelectric actuator to a full scaled rotor blade, several issues exist. Difficulty of manufacturing in a large size and severe brittleness in its material characteristics will need to be examined.

  • Ultrasonic chaotic excitations combined with sensor prediction algorithms have shown the ability to identify incipient damage (loss of preload) in a bolted joint. In this study we examine a physical experiment on a single-bolt aluminum lap joint as well as a three-dimensional physics-based simulation designed to model the behavior of guided ultrasonic waves through a similarly configured joint. A multiple bolt frame structure is also experimentally examined. In the physical experiment each signal is imparted to the structure through a macro-fiber composite (MFC) patch on one side of the lap joint and sensed using an equivalent MFC patch on the opposite side of the joint. The model applies the waveform via direct nodal displacement and 'senses' the resulting displacement using an average of the nodal strain over an area equivalent to the MFC patch. A novel statistical classification feature is developed from information theory concepts of cross-prediction and interdependence. This damage detection algorithm is used to evaluate multiple damage levels and locations.

  • In the present paper, dynamic characteristics and vibration control performance of a cylindrical shell structure are experimentally investigated and results are presented in the air and underwater conditions. End-capped cylindrical shell structure is manufactured and macro-fiber composite(MFC) actuators are attached on the inside-surface of the structure. Modal characteristics are studied in the air and under the water conditions and then equation of motion of the structure is derived from the test results. Structural vibration control performances of the proposed structure are evaluated via experiments with optimal control algorithm. Vibration control performances are presented both in the frequency and time domains.
