  • The sewing machine is one of the oldest machine that has ever used, which is related with clothes' life. Modern sewing machines are divided into three groups by the sititch character, which are the lock stitch sewing machine group, the over lock sewing machine group and the specical sewing machine group. The lock stitch sewing machine have being used more than any others, which is also good model to study. This work is part of the improvement of an industrial lock stitch(ILS) sewing machine's design. The research objectives are the kinematic analysis and evaluations of stitch performance. The feed dog and the needle extreme's motion, which are important two part's motion in the sewing machine, are characterized by the stitch process and the needle trace. The needle trace is formulated as the stitch spacing, the stitch spacing's ratio(the static characteristic), and the stitch's phase difference(the dynamic characteristic). The tested ILS sewing machine is evaluated as a good static characteristic and a bad dynamic characteristic. Namely, a stitch spacing's ratio is 0.01~0.063(mm/mm) and a stitch's phase difference ratio is 0.06~0.13(mm/mm).

  • In this paper we consider the part-machine cell formation decision of the generalized Group Technology(GT) problem in which multiple process routes can be generated for each part. The existing p-median model and similarity coefficient algorithm can solve only small-sized or well-structured cases. We suggest an assignment method for the cell formation problem. This method uses an assignment model which is a simple linear programming. Numerical examples show that our assignment method provides good separable cells formation even for large-sized and ill-structured problems.

  • The development of a microprocessor-controlled centreless grinding station has opened the way for the production of automobile camshafts-from raw casting to precision-finished part-as a fully automated operation. This results in manufacture to finer tolerances, with part-to-part consistency and a floor-to-floor time of half that needed for alternative production methods. Shafts with a grinding length of up to 700 mm can be processed.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop a procedure and a system for the design of manufacturing cells. First, a procedure is developed to create machine cells, to identify part families and to allocate part families to machine cells so that the intercellular movement of part is minimized. Next, a system for solving this procedure is developed and an application example is demonstrated.

  • FEM analysis is essential to shorten the development time and reduce the cost for developing high-performance machine tools. Mount joint parts play important role to ensure static and dynamic stability of machine tools. This paper suggests a computational modeling of mount joint part of machine tools. MATRIX27 element of ANSYS is adopted to model mount joint parts. MATRIX27 allows the definition of stiffness and damping matrices in matrix form. The matrix is assumed to relate two nodes, each with six degrees of freedom per node. Stiffness and damping values of commercial mount products are measured to build a database for FEM analysis. Jack mounts with rubber pad are exemplified in this paper. The database extracted from the experiments is also used to estimate of stiffness and damping of untested mounts. FEM analysis of machine tools system with the suggested mount computational model is performed. Static and dynamic results prove the feasibility of the suggested mount model.

  • The demands of the large scale machine tools, for instance, such as planomiller, turning machine, boring machine, NC machine, have been gradually increased in recent years. As the performances of machine tools and/or cutting tools are advanced, it is possible to perform high-speed and high-precision cutting works. The effective treatment of wet chip, which is discharged from cutting works, becomes very important problems. Therefore, this study is forced on the design of large scale machine tools using CATIA V5R18 and analysis of cutter, which is considered as essential equipment in large scale machine tools, using MSC.Nastran & MSC.Patran. Especially, the relations between tolerated load of cutter, driving horse power and rpm of driving shaft in chip processing system are investigated through analysis. As the results, the reliability of design could be improved by evaluating simulated numerical values, it showed that tolerated loads of supported part and edged part of cutter are 87,000N and 14,450N, respectively.

  • The piercing and blanking of thin sheet metal working is specified division in press die design and making. In order to prevent the detects, the optimum design of the production part, strip process layout, die design, die making and try out etc. re necessary the analysis of effective factors. For example, theory and practice of metal shearing process and its phenomena, die structure, machine tool working for die making, die materials and its heat treatment, metal working in industrial and its know how etc. In this study, we analyzed whole of data base, theoretical back ground of metal working process, and then performed the progressive die tryout with the screw press. This study regards to the aim of small quantity of production part's press working. Part 1 of this study reveals with production part and strip process layout design.

  • In this paper, a method to determine the optimal configuration of operating policies in an integrated-automated manufacturing system using the Taguchi method and computer simulation experiments is presented. An integrated-automated manufacturing system called direct-input-output manufacturing system(DIOMS) is described. We only consider the operational aspect of the DIOMS. Four operating policies including input sequencing control, dispatching rule for the storage/retrieval(S/R) machine, machine center-based part type selection rule, and storage assignment policy are treated as design factors. The number of machine centers, the number of part types, demand rate, processing time and the rate of each part type, vertical and horizontal speed of the S/R machine, and the size of a local buffer in the machine centers are considered as noise factors in generating various manufacturing system environment. For the performance characteristics, mean flow time and throughput are adopted. A robust design experiment with inner and outer orthogonal arrays are conducted by computer simulation, and an optimal configuration of operating policies is presented which consists of a combination of the level of each design factor. The validity of the optimal configurations is investigated by comparing their signal-to-noise ratios with those obtained with full factorial designs.

  • Human state in human-machine systems highly affects the overall system performance, and should be detected and monitored. Physiological cues are essential indicators of human state and useful for the purpose of monitoring. The study presented in this paper was focused on developing a bio-inspired sensing system, i.e., Nano-Skin, to non-intrusively measure physiological cues on human-machine contact surfaces to detect human state. The paper is presented in three parts. The first part is to analyze the relationship between human state and physiological cues, and to introduce the conceptual design of Nano-Skin. Generally, heart rate, skin conductance, skin temperature, operating force, blood alcohol concentration, sweat rate, and electromyography are closely related with human state. They can be measured through human-machine contact surfaces using Nano-Skin. The second part is to discuss the technologies for skin temperature measurement. The third part is to introduce the design and manufacture of the Nano-Skin for skin temperature measurement. Experiments were performed to verify the performance of the Nano-Skin in temperature measurement. Overall, the study concludes that Nano-Skin is a promising product for measuring physiological cues on human-machine contact surfaces to detect human state.

  • The machine cell formation problem is the problem to group machines into machine families and parts into part families so as to minimize bottleneck machines, exceptional parts, and inter-cell part movements in cellular manufacturing systems and flexible manufacturing systems. This paper proposes a new machine cell formation method based on the adaptive Hamming net which is a kind of neural network model. To show the applicability of the proposed method, it presents some experiment results and compares the method with other cell formation methods. From the experiments, we observed that the proposed method could produce good cells for the machine cell formation problem.
