  • The partial-discharge(PD) is accompanied by physical and chemical phenomena, such as heat, light, noise, gas, chemical transformation, electric current, and electromagnetic radiation. The PD can be detected by measuring one of these changes. Although some techniques are employed in this purpose, several obstacles interfere with an on-line measurement. Now a fiber-optic sensor for detecting ultrasonics is suggested for the on line measurement system with high accuracy. In this paper, an optical fiber sensor utilizing the principal of Mach-Zehnder interferometer was proposed to detect the discharge signal.

  • A single mode fiber-optic Mach-Zehnder interferometer for the measurement of strain is described. A fiber-optic strain gauge with great resolution and wide measurement range is realized. In order to varify the dynamic response, the measurements of strain below 1涅 with frequency range 5-50Hz are compared with a semiconductor strain gauge. We report theoretical evaluation for mechanical analysis, PZT-plate, the phase change in a fiber-optic strain gauge and a semiconductor strain gauge. The dynamical characteristics of a fiber-optic strain gauge and a semiconductor strain gauge output siganl show equivalent behavior. This result is shown in very good usage as the dynamical measurement of the low strain below 1涅 by this system.

  • An integrated Mach-Zehnder interferometer for biosensor applications was designed and fabricated. To implement the optimum biosensor a rib waveguide must have single mode operation and high sensitivity. The proposed Mach-Zehnder interferometer was fabricated based on these design rules, and its feasibility is confirmed by ethanol detection experiment in the real-time measurement system operating at 632.8 nm.

  • We constructed a very accurate fiber bragg grating sensor system using an unbalanced mach-zehnder interferometer which converts the measurand-induced bragg wavelength shift to phase change of th einterference signal. With a shielded reference grating, output phase drift which orginates from the thermal drift on the interferometer was compensated. Mesured accuracy of the constructed system was 0.03 .deg. C and 0.26.mu. strain for temperature and strain measuremtn, respectively. It is over 300 times better resolution compared to the conventional optical spectrum analyzer which has 0.1nm wavelength resolution capability.

  • An experimental study was carried out in a cavity with upper channel and square heat surface by visualization equipment with Mach-Zehnder interferometer and laser apparatus. The visualization system consists of 2-dimensional sheet light by Argon-Ion Laser with cylindrical lens and flow picture recording system. Instant simultaneous velocity vectors at whole field were measured by 2-D PIV system(CACTUS'2000). Obtained result showed various flow patterns. Severe unsteady flow fluctuation within the cavity are remarkable and sheared mixing layer phenomena are also found at the region where inlet flow is collided with the counter-clockwise rotating main primary vortex. Photographs of Mach-Zehnder are also compared in terms of constant heat flux.

  • Single mode optical fiber interferometeric sensors using phase tracking homodyne detection are typically susceptible to environmentally indured temperature fluctuations and other types of disturbances. A simple and effective phase tracking feedback electronic circuit for compensator is described to achieve stabilizing signal output, maximum sensitivity and linearity in the fiber optic Mach-Zehnder infterferometer in the presence of differential phase drift. The phase tracking range of the piezoelectric cyclinder in the reference arm is \ulcorner.7 \ulcornerad and the prabe mass about 1 gram in the sensing arm was used for measurements of the gravity acceleration.

  • A signal processor for interferometeric fiber optic sensors, which measure dynamic quantities of frequency up to 1 KHz with high sensitivity, is developed. It is a high-speed version of the all-digital phase tracking (ADPT) processor that was used to measure static or slowly-varying quantities. The processor was applied to a fiber optic Mach-Zehnder interferometer to evaluate the performance. The measured total harmonic distortion was near to -50 ㏈, which is the theoretical limit or the ADPT signal processing.

  • Laminar natural convection heat transfer past an outer rectangular corner was experimentally investigated by using Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The present geometry represents the case when the plume from a vertical flat plate and that from a horizontal one merge into a single plume. the temperature distribution and the local heat flux were measured in the range of Grashof number 8 * 10$^{4}$$r_{LH}$ <1.25 * 10$^{6}$ . The effect of the geometric aspect ratio was also considered. Correlation for the average Nusselt number vs. Grashof number was obtained by using a newly determined characteristic length. To determine the interaction of the plumes, the present results were compared with the similarity solutions available from the isolated vertical and isolated horizontal flat plates.

  • A fiber optic voltage sensor is demonstrated with a new signal processing scheme that displays the magnitude and the waveform of applied voltage with immunity from the signal frequency change. The sensor is based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a PZT phase modulator as a sensing element. We observed a linear relationship between applied voltage and the number of fringe shift during a half cycle of the ac signal. The temperature dependence of the sensor output is experimentally evaluated over the temperature range from $-20^{\circ}C to 80^{\circ}C$. It is demonstrated that the detrimental polarization modulation effect can be overcome by using polarization maintaining fibers or a half-wave plate. plate.
