Polarization Insensitive CWDM Optical Demultiplexer Based on Polarization Splitter-rotator and Delayed Interferometric Optical Filter

  • We theoretically analyze and experimentally demonstrate a polarization-diversified four-channel optical demultiplexer (DeMUX) comprising a hybrid mode conversion-type polarization splitter rotator (PSR) and delayed Mach-Zehnder interferometer optical DeMUX for use in coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM)-based optical interconnect applications. The Si wire-based device fabricated by a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor-compatible process exhibited nearly the same filter spectral response irrespective of the input polarization state under the PSR. The device had an extremely low insertion loss of <1.0 dB, polarization-dependent loss of <1.0 dB, and interchannel imbalance of <0.5 dB, suppressing unwanted wavelength and polarization crosstalk from neighboring channels of <-20 dB at each peak transmission channel grid.

Optical Triangular Waveform Generation with Alterable Symmetry Index Based on a Cascaded SD-MZM and Polarization Beam Splitter-combiner Architecture

  • A scheme is proposed to generate triangular waveforms with alterable symmetry. The key component is a cascaded single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (SD-MZM) and optical polarization beam splitter-combiner architecture. In this triangular waveform generator, the bias-induced phase shift, modulation index and controllable delay difference are changeable. To generate triangular waveform signals with different symmetry indexes, different combinations of these variables are selected. Compared with the previous schemes, this generator just contains one SD-MZM and the balanced photodetector (BPD) is not needed, which means the costs and energy consumption are significantly reduced. The operation principle of this triangular waveform generator has been theoretically analyzed, and the corresponding simulation is conducted. Based on the theoretical and simulated results, some experiments are demonstrated to prove the validity of the scheme. The triangular waveform signals with a symmetry factor range of 20-80% are generated. Both experiment and theory prove the feasibility of this method.

Development of 1×16 Thermo-optic MZI Switch Using Multimode Interference Coupler (다중모드 간섭현상을 이용한 1×16 마하젠더 스위치 개발)

  • A $1{\times}16$ thermo-optic switch with small excess loss using multimode interference(MMI) couplers is designed, fabricated, and measured. This paper introduces the proposed $1{\times}16$ thermo-optic switch, and discusses the measurement results. The $1{\times}16$ thermo-optic switch is farmed as 4-stage which consists of 15 unit devices. The unit devices are the $2{\times}2$ thermo-optic switches with Mach-Zehnder interferometer(MZI) structure. The characteristics of the $1{\times}16$ thermo-optic switch depends strongly on each unit device. The unit deviceconsists of two 3-dB general interference MMI couplers and two single mode waveguide arms as a phase shifter. First of all, the 3-dB optical splitter and $2{\times}2$ MZI thermo-optic switch have been tested to confirm the characteristics of the unit devices of the $1{\times}16$ MZI thermo-optic switch. Using the measurement results of the unit devices, the $1{\times}16$ MZI thermo-optic switch can be produced with better characteristics. The resultant structure of the MMI coupler with the optical light source of wavelength of 1550nm for the $1{\times}16$ thermo-optic switch is that the width and the optimized length are $25{\mu}m\;and\;1580{\mu}m$, respectively. The smallest excess loss fur the unit device is -0.5dB and the average excess loss is -0.7dB.

Image encryption using phase-based virtual image and interferometer

  • In this paper, we propose an improved optical security system using three phase-encoded images and the principle of interference. This optical system based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer consists of one phase-encoded virtual image to be encrypted and two phase-encoded images, encrypting image and decrypting image, where every pixel in the three images has a phase value of '0' and '$\pi$'. The proposed encryption is performed by the multiplication of an encrypting image and a phase-encoded virtual image which dose not contain any information from the decrypted image. Therefore, even if the unauthorized users steal and analyze the encrypted image, they cannot reconstruct the required image. This virtual image protects the original image from counterfeiting and unauthorized access.. The decryption of the original image is simply performed by interfering between a reference wave and a direct pixel-to-pixel mapping image of the encrypted image with a decrypting image. Both computer simulations and optical experiments confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed optical technique for optical security applications.

  • All-optical NOR logic device was realized by use of two pump signals with a single wavelength and a semiconductor optical amplifier(SOA). Specially, Mach-Zehnder(MZ) modulator was used for an external modulation of the pump signals. To obtain the sufficient gain saturation of the SOA, pump signals are amplified by an Er-doped fiber amplifier(EDFA) at the input of the SOA. Pump and probe signals are obtained from a DFB laser diode(${\lambda}_p$=1554 nm) and a tunable laser diode(${\lambda}_s$=1535 nm), respectively. The operation characteristics of the NOR logic device are successfully measured and demonstrated at the modulation frequency of 4.83 MHz.

Light-induced changes of refractive indices and dispersions of $Er^{3+}$-doped fibers of various doping concentrations (어븀 첨가 광섬유의 첨가 농도에 따른 광유도 굴절률 및 분산의 변화)

  • This study describes a simple and effective experimental determination of pump-power dependence of refractive indices and dispersions of erbium-doped fibers (EDFs) of various doping concentrations. Systermatical analysis on light-induced change of the refractive indices and dispersion for a signal wavelength range of 1510 nm-1560 nm with a pump of 980 nm wavelength has been made by measuring the pump-induced phase changes of the signal beam in Mach-Zehnder type interferometer, which has an optically pumped EDF and a reference EDF in each of the two arms, respectively. The measured pump-induced refractive indices match well with the theoritically predicted ones. The results show that pump-induced refractivity and dispersion changes of the EDF increase with the increasing pump power and $Er^{3+}$-doping concentration as expected from theory.

Stabilization and characterization of a 10 GHz harmonically mode-locked Er-doped fiber ring laser by suppression of relaxation oscillation (완화진동억압을 이용한 10 GHz 고조모드잠금된 고리형 어븀첨가 광섬유 레이저의 출력 안정화 및 특성 측정)

  • Using Mach-Zehnder type intensity modulator, we stabilized a 10 GHz harmonically mode-locked dispersion-compensated fiber ring laser using a feedback controlling system, and we measured its stability. The laser was stabilized for more than 16 hours by controlling the cavity length to suppress the relaxation oscillation frequency component which had caused the laser output instability. The ms timing jitter and ms amplitude noise were measured to be 260-524 fsec and 4~11.5%, respectively, and BER test measurement showed a value of 10$^{-13}$ .

Natural convection cooling of discrete heaters with same heat generation in a vertical open top cavity (상부가 개방된 수직 캐비티내에 장착된 불연속 균일 발열체의 자연대류 냉각)

  • Natural convection cooling of discrete heaters located in a two-dimensional vertical open top cavity is investigated experimentally. The five discrete heaters with same heat generation are located on the wall of the cavity. The heaters are arranged in two configurations; flush-mounted on a vertical wall and protruding from the wall about 4.5 mm. The materials used for the vertical walls are copper and epoxy-resin, and air is used as the cooling fluid. The temperature and flow fields in the cavity were visualized by means of Mach-Zehnder interferometer and smoke-method. Also, local temperature measurements are made along the vertical wall. Results are obtained for cavity aspect ratios of 4.6, 7.5 and 9.5 and modified Rayleigh numbers ranging from 10$^{3}$ to 10$^{6}$ . Results indicate that the cooling efficiency for the copper wall is superior to that of the epoxy-resin. For the epoxy-resin wall, the protrusion of the heaters plays a role in decreasing the heat transfer performance. The location of maximum temperature is significantly influenced by the wall materials and heater configurations. Correlations relating the Nusselt number to the modified Rayleigh number are proposed.

Separation Algorithm for 2D Refractive Index Distribution and Thickness Measurement of Transparent Objects using Multi-wavelength Source (다파장 광원을 이용한 위상 물체의 2 차원 굴절률 분포와 두께 측정을 위한 분리 알고리즘)

  • We propose the separation algorithm to simultaneously measure two-dimensional refractive index distribution and thickness profile of transparent samples using three wavelengths. The optical system was based on the Mach-zehnder interferometer with LD (Laser Diode)-based multi-wavelength sources. A LCR (Liquid Crystal Retarder) was used to obtain interference images at four phase states and then the optical phase of the object is calculated by four-bucket algorithm. Experimental results with a glass rod are provided at the different wavelengths of 635nm, 660nm and 675nm. The refractive indices of the sample are distributed with accuracy of less than 0.0005 and the thickness profile of sample was cylindrical type. This result demonstrates that it is possible to separate refractive index distribution and thickness profile of samples in two dimensions using the proposed algorithm.

Design and Implementation of the OADM for DWDM Using FBG and MZI (FBG와 MZI를 이용한 DWDM용 OADM의 설계와 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Lightwave communication system for Wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) consists of multiplexer, demultiplexer and optical Inter. But, the existing multiplexer, demultiplexer and optical filter is difficult to minimize system and reduce weight because they are not integrated device type. In this paper, thus, we propose the OADM baed on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer(MZI) with FBG(fiber Bragg Slating) in the interferometer Ems. The OADM using FBG. and MZI is able to minimize system and reduce weight. We analyze output characteristics of OADM and present the optimum design data through the computer simulation and experimentation. Also unposed OADM fits for DWDM(Dense WDM) system because of wide bandwidth by tuning narrow linewidth.
