The method of enhancing visibility in optical fiber sensor was investigated by improving coherence length of light source. The optical feedback technique is used to enhance coherence length in fiber laser which generates laser in near infrared wavelength region and utilizes low loss characteristics of optical communication grade fiber. In this paper, the effect to coherence length by short and long optical feedback paths are investigated by using Mach-Zehnder interferometer technique. The effect to coherence length by changing optical feedback power and optical modulation are investigated. The spectral drift was calculated by measuring the degree of phase perturbation in unbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer having loom path difference. The short optical feedback path was effective to reduce spectral drift to 450kHz/sec and the long optical feedback path in combination with short optical feedback path was found to further reduce spectral drift to 50kHz/sec.
We investigate the characteristics of RJ (random jitter) in an analog fiber-optic link employing a MZM (Mach-Zehnder modulator) and an EDFA (Erbium-doped fiber amplifier). RJ has been measured using two methods, one of which derived from the noise spectrum of a RF spectrum analyzer and the other from the histogram data of a sampling oscilloscope. If the optical power and/or the RF power input to the MZM increase, RJ decreases due to the output signal power increase. For the optical link without EDFA, the minimum RJ is about 1 ps at an RF power of 10 dBm and an optical power of 8 dBm measured using the noise spectrum method. For the optical link with an EDFA, RJ decreases toward a jitter floor as the EDFA gain increases. If the gain increases further, it has been observed that RJ increases from the minimum. If the EDFA gain is fixed, RJ is smaller for the case of larger optical input power. As the EDFA gain increases, RJ reduction rate becomes greater for the case of lower optical input power.
A fiber-optic magnetic sensor system for the detection of small ac magnetic field(200Hz-2 kHz) was constructed. Magnetic field sensing part was fabricated by bonding a section of optical fiber to amorphous metallic glass(2605SC) having large magnetostriction effect. And with the directional coupler, all fiber type Mach-Zehnder interferometer was constructed to measure the variation of the external magnetic field by translating it into the optical phase shift in the interferometer. The signal fading problem of the interferometer, which is due to random phase drifts originated from the environment, i.e., temperature fluctuation, vibrations, etc., was elliminated by feedback phase compensation. This allows the sensitivity to be maintained at the maximum by keeping the interferometer in quadrature phase condition. The frequency response of metallic glass was found to be nearly flat in the range of 90 Hz-2 kHz and dc bias field for the maximum ac response was 3.5 Oe. The interferometer output showed good linearity over the range $\pm$0.5 Oe. For 1 kHz ac magnetic field the scale factor S and the minimum detectable magnetic field were measured to be 8.0 rad/Oe and $3X10^{-6} Oe/\sqrt{Hz}$at 1 Hz detection bandwidth respectively.
This paper proposes how to fabricate an educational Mach-Zehnder interferometer that is easy to align and inexpensive, using 3D printers and semiconductor lasers. The interferometer consists of a body $165mm{\times}120mm{\times}57mm$ in size, mirror mounts, a laser holder, beam splitters, and so on. The laser path is adjusted by 4 mirror mounts, each comprised of rubber bands, small metal wires, and a screw. The interference fringe is enlarged by the lens at the final stage. The refractive index of a slide glass was measured by counting the number of moving interference fringes while the slide glass, inserted into one of the two interferometer arms, is rotating. The formula for the refractive index as a function of the optical-path difference and rotation angle was obtained, and used to calculate the refractive index of glass from the interferometer experiment. The use of a rotating glass in one arm of the interferometer nullifies the need for a precision stage, which despite its high cost is often required to observe the moving interference fringe in the classroom. Therefore, the 3D-printed Mach-Zehnder interferometer proposed in this paper can be very useful for education, because of its affordability and performance. It enables students to perform both qualitative and quantitative studies using a 3D-printed interferometer, such as measuring the refractive index of a glass sample, and the wavelength of light.

Mach-Zehnder type traveling-wave optical modulators with 3-section and 5-section phase reversal were designed and fabricated on z-cut $LiNbO_3$ substrates. Optical waveguides were designed by means of the FDM(Finite Difference Method). Design of CPW traveling-wave electrodes were performed by the SOR(Successive Over Relaxation) in the active region and by the CMM(Conformal Mapping) in the input/output section. The optical response R(${\omega}$ calculated based on the measured S-parameters showed the bandwidth of 15GHz centered at 25GHz for the 3-section, and the bandwidth of 22GHz at 45GHz for the 5-section.

In this paper, an incoherent holographic 3D imaging and display system based on the modified triangular and Mach-Zehnder interferometers is optically implemented and some experiments are carried out. Incoherent hologram of a 3D object is generated by using the hologram input system of modified triangular interferometer. Then this complex hologram is reconstructed by using the hologram output system of modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer in which two LCD spatial light modulators and a waveplate are inserted. From the experiment with two point sources having a depth difference of 100 mm each other, it is revealed that each point source can be independently reconstructed at its own focal position from the complex hologram, while both of the bias and conjugate image are simultaneously eliminated at the same time. And in the experiment with the real 3D object of two dices having a depth difference of 30 mm each other, it is also conformed that the bias and conjugate image can be effectively eliminated from the hologram pattern and each 3D dice can be also successfully reconstructed at its own focal position from the complex hologram. These experiment results finally suggest a possibility of implementing a new incoherent holographic 3D imaging and display system using the modified triangular and Mach-Zehender interferometers.

We propose the encrytion method using visual cryptography and virtual phase images. The decryption is able to be performed when anyone got all of the keys. Original information is extracted by using Mach-Zehnder interferometer.
We report an efficient jitter reduction technique in an analog fier-optic link employing a Mach-Zehnder modulator followed by an erbium-doped fiber amplifier. By adjusting the modulator-bias to $0.089V_{\pi}$, we could increase the RF gain up to 10.65 dB for 10 GHz RF signal and reduce the random jitter by 46.5%, max, at an input optical power of -0.11 dBm to the EDFA.
We propose a new optical watermarking method, which can protect the copyright of digital data, using a binary phase hologram and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Using a simulated annealing algorithm, the binary phase hologram of the mark image to be hidden is designed. We obtained a watermarked image by linearly superposing the hologram, which is the watermark, in the original image. The extraction processing of the mark image from the watermarked image is achieved by placing the phase-modulated watermarked image on a LCD in one path and the phase-modulated original image on another LCD in the other path in the Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The mark image was obtained by inverse Fourier transforming the phase modulated interference intensity. We confirmed that the proposed method is robust for the cropped images through computer simulation, and we implemented it optically using LCDs which are phase modulation devices.
