  • The past thirty years have seen increasingly rapid advances in the field of Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) transparent thin film.[1] However, a major problem with this ITO thin film application is high cost compared with other transparent thin film materials.[2] So far, in order to overcome this disadvantage, we show a transparent ITO/Ag/i-ZnO multilayer thin film electrode can be the solution. In comparison with using amount of ITO as a transparent conducting material, intrinsic-Zinc-Oxide (i-ZnO) based on ITO/Ag/i-ZnO multilayer thin film showed cost-effective and it has not only highly transparent but also conductive properties. The aim of this research has therefore been to try and establish how ITO/Ag/i-ZnO multilayer thin film would be more effective than ITO thin film. Herein, we report ITO/Ag/i-ZnO multilayer thin film properties by using optical spectroscopic method and measuring sheet resistance. At a certain total thickness of thin film, sheet resistance of ITO/Ag/i-ZnO multilayer was drastically decreased than ITO layer approximately $40{\Omega}/{\square}$ at same visible light transmittance.(minimal point $5.2{\Omega}/{\square}$). Tendency, which shows lowly sheet resistive in a certain transmittance, has been observed, hence, it should be suitable for transparent electrode device.

  • Multilayer Poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA)/ Poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) bone plates were fabricated using electrospinning and in vitro investigations were carried out for pre-clinical biocompatibility studies. The initial cellular cytotoxicity of the methacrylate (PMMA)/ Poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) bone plates was measured by MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay using fibroblast-like L-929 cells. Cellular adhesion and differentiation studies were carried out using osteoblast-like MG-63 cells. As simulated body fluid (SBF) contains the same ionic concentration of body fluid and any bioactive material tends to deposit bone-like apatite on the samples surfaces into the SBF, in vitro bioactivity of the multilayer bone plates were investigated using SBF. We also studied the internal organization and tensile strength of the multilayer PMMA/PVA bone plates using micro-computed topography (${\mu}$-CT) and universal testing instrument (UTI, Korea) respectively. The cellular cytotoxicity study with MTT confirmed that the cellular viability was 78 to 90% which indicates good cyto-compatibility. Scanning electron microscopic findings revealed a good attachment and adhesion phenomenon of MG-63 cells onto the surfaces of the samples. Cellular differentiation studies also showed that osteogenic differentiation was switched on in a timely manner and affirmed along with that of the control group. Bone-like apatite formation on the surfaces was confirmed within 14 days of SBF incubation. Initial organizations of the multilayer PMMA/PVA bone plates were characterized as dense and uniform. The tensile strength of the post-pressing electronspun mat was higher than that of the pre-electronspun mat. These results suggest that a multilayer PMMA/PVA bone plate system is biocompatible, bioactive and a very good alternative bone plate system.

  • Multilayer mirrors are very useful for applications of high energy X-ray. X-rays of high energy require very small thickness, a few nanometers, in the d-spacing of a multilayer mirror. Each layer is composed of a multilayr mirror influences to interfacial roughness or interdiffusion which gives rise to degrade specular reflection. Carbon layer of 1 nm thick in a C/W multilayer mirror of 3.25 nm d-spacing was examined. Carbon as well as tungsten layers were very uniform, and there was no micro-structure in carbon layers. However, interdiffusion between carbon and tungste layers was observed by a transmission electron microscope.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the multilayer structure with lossy metamaterials using ABCD Matrix method to get the transmission characteristics. Compared to the recursive method which cannot be used to analyze the lossy characteristics of multilayer structure because of its complexity, we used the ABCD matrix method is easy to apply because of its matrix chain concepts for arbitrary number of multilayer structure and lossy material. To verify the results of this paper, we used both for multilayer dielectric and metamaterial, respectively, and obtained the same results. Multilayer structure with lossy metamaterial showed minimized ripple and broadband transmission compared to dielectric multilayered structure. This can be used in various applications as antenna radome and shielding material, etc.

  • Multilayer passivation film on OLED with organic/inorganic hybrid structure as to diminish the thermal stress and expansion was researched to protect device from the direct damage of $O_2$ and $H_2O$ and improve life time characteristics. Red OLED doped with 1 vol.% Rubrene in $Alq_3$ was used as a basic device. The films consist of ITO(150 nm)/ELM200_HIL(50 nm)/ELM002_HTL(30 nm)/$Alq_3$: 1 vol.% Rubrene(30 nm)/$Alq_3$(30 nm) and LiF(0.7 nm)/Al(100 nm) which were formed in that order. Using LiF/$SiN_x$ as a buffer layer was determined because it significantly improved life time characteristics without suffering damage in the process of forming passivation film. Multilayer passivation film on buffer layer didn't produce much change in current efficiency, while the half life time at 1,000 $cd/m^2$ of OLED/LiF/$SiN_x$/E1/$SiN_x$ was 710 hours which showed about 1.5 times longer than OLED/LiF/$SiN_x$/E1 with 498 hours. futhermore, OLED/LiF/$SiN_x$/E1/$SiN_x$/E1/$SiN_x$ with 1301 hours showed about twice than OLED/LiF/$SiN_x$/E1/$SiN_x$ which demonstrated that superior characteristics of life time was obtained in multilayer passivation film. Through the above result, it was suggested using LiF/$SiN_x$ as a buffer layer could reduce the damage from the difference of thermal expansion coefficient in OLED with protective films, and epoxy layer in multilayer passivation film could function like a buffer between $SiN_x$ inorganic layers with relatively large thermal stress.

  • In this work, analysis of biocompatible TiO2 oxide multilayer by the XPS depth profiling was researched. the manufacture of the TiO2 barrier-type multilayer was accurately performed in a mixed electrolyte containing HAp, Pd, and Ag nanoparticles. The temperature of the solution was kept at approximatively $32^{\circ}C$ and was regularly rotated by a magnetic stirring rod in order to increase the ionic diffusion rate. The manufactured specimens were carefully analyzed by XPS depth profile to investigate the result of chemical bonding behaviors. From the analysis of chemical states of the TiO2 oxide multilayer using XPS, the peaks are showed with the typical signal of Ti oxide at 459.1 eV and 464.8 eV, due to Ti 2p(3/2) and Ti 2p(1/2), respectively. The Pd-3d peak was split into Pd-3d(5/2) and Pd-3d(3/2)peaks, and shows two bands at 334.7 and 339.9 eV for Pd-3d3 and Pd-3d5, respectively. Also, the peaks of Ag-3d have been investigated. The chemical states consisted of the O-1s, P-2p, and Ti-2p were identified in the forms of PO42- and PO43-. Based on the results of the chemical states, the chemical elements into the TiO2 oxide multilayer were also inferred to be penetrated from the electrolyte during anodic process. The structure characterization of the modified surface were performed by using FE-SEM, and from the result of biological evaluation in simulated body fluid(SBF), the biocompatibility of TiO2 oxide multilayer was effective for bioactive property.

  • In-depth analysis by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) is very important for the development of electronic devices using multilayered structures, because the quantity and depth distribution of some elements are critical for the electronic properties. Correct determination of the interface locations is critical for the calibration of the depth scale in SIMS depth profiling analysis of multilayer films. However, the interface locations are distorted from real ones by the several effects due to sputtering with energetic ions. In this study, the determination of interface locations in SIMS depth profiling of multilayer films was investigated by Si/Ge and Ti/Si multilayer systems. The original SIMS depth profiles were converted into compositional depth profiles by the relative sensitivity factors (RSF) derived from the atomic compositions of Si-Ge and Si-Ti alloy reference films determined by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy. The thicknesses of the Si/Ge and Ti/Si multilayer films measured by SIMS depth profiling with various impact energy ion beam were compared with those measured by TEM. There are two methods to determine the interface locations. The one is the feasibility of 50 atomic % definition in SIMS composition depth profiling. And another one is using a distribution of SiGe and SiTi dimer ions. This study showed that the layer thicknesses measured with low energy oxygen and Cs ion beam and, by extension, with method of 50 atomic % definition were well correlated with the real thicknesses determined by TEM.

  • CrN/AlN multilayer coatings with various bilayer periods in the range of 1.8 to 7.4 nm were synthesized using a closed-field unbalanced magnetron sputtering method. Their crystalline structure, chemical compositions and mechanical properties have been investigated with Auger electron spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, atomic force microscopy, nanoindentation, scratch tests. The properties of the multilayer coatings varied strongly depending upon the magnitude of the bilayer period. The multilayer coating with a bilayer period of 1.8 nm showed the maximum hardness and an elastic modulus of approximately 37.6 and 417 GPa, respectively, which was 1.54 times higher than the hardness predicted by the rule of mixture from the CrN and AlN coatings. The hardness of the multilayer coating increased as the bilayer period decreased, i.e. as the rotation speed increased. The Hall-Petch type relationship, hardness being related to (1/periodicity)$^{-1/2}$, suggested by Lehoczky was confirmed for the CrN/AlN multilayer coatings with bilayer period close to the 5-10 nm range. With decreasing bilayer period, the surface morphology of the films became rougher and the critical load of films for adhesion strength gradually decreased.

  • High performance organic electroluminescnet(EL) devices which are composed of organic thin multilayer films are fabricated. The basic structure is ITO/Emitting layer/LiF/Al in which have a blended emitting layer. The emitting layer is consisted of a host material(N,N' diphenyl-N,N' (3-methyl phenyl)-l,l'-biphenyl-4,4'diamine)(TPD)) and a guest emitting material(poly(3-hexylthiophehe)(P3HT)). We think that the energy transfer in blending layer occurred from TPD to P3HT. Red emitting multilayer EL devices were fabricated using tris(8-hydroxyqunolinate) aluminum$(Alq_3)$ as electron transport material. The device structure of ITO/blending layer(TPD+P3HT)$/Alq_3$/LiF/Al was employed. In the Voltage-current-luminance characteristics of multilayer device, the device tum on at the 2V and the luminance of $10{\mu}W/cm^2$ obtain at l0V. Red emission peak at 640nm was observed with this device structure. We have presented evidence that the excitation energy migration between a polymeric host and guest has to be explained. And by using multilayer, the red light emitting EL device enhances not only Voltage-current-luminance characteristic but also stability of device.

  • In this paper, the modeling and design of high-Q multilayer passives and multilayer diplexer for GSM/DCS applications designed and fabricated using these passives have been investigated.. To miniaturize the system, configurations of inductor and capacitor have involved a square spiral structure and a vertically-interdigitated capacitor similar to 3D interdigital structure, respectively. Multilayer diplexers for GSM/DCS applications were designed and fabricated to apply high-Q multilayer passives to practical systems, which were designed by the proposed structural and equivalent circuit model. LPF for GSM band had the passband insertion loss of less than 0.55 dB, the return loss of more than 12 dB, and the isolation level of more than 26 dB by locating attenuation pole at 1800 MHz. HPF for DCS band had the passband insertion loss of less than 0.82 dB, the return loss of more than 11 dB, and the isolation level of more than 38 dB by locating attenuation pole at 930 MHz.
