Improvement of the MPEG-4 Still Image Compression Using Visually Weighted Quantizers (인간 시각 양자화기를 이용한 MPEG-4 정지영상 압축 방법의 성능 개선)

  • In this paper, we investigate on the techniques for still image compression based on the wavelet transform, which will be adopted as a part of the MPEG-4 compression standards. Also we propose an effective still image compression technique, which is simpler than the MPEG-4 compression method and is improved by using a visually weighted quantizer based to HVS(Human Visual System), Simulations are carried out and compared with the algorithm proposed in MPEG-4. The simulation results show that the proposed method in this paper gives much better image quality than that of the method in MPEG-4. Also, except the case where the compression ratio is high, it shows that the proposed method has lower in complexity and provides a better subjective and objective image quality than EZW in most cases. Since wavelet transform well reflects HVS, the compressed image rarely causes blocking artifact compared with JPEG, and in most cases, it shows considerable quality improvement over JPEG.

IPMP(Intellectual Property Management and Protection) Service Interfaces based on MPEG Multimedia (MPEG 멀티미디어 미들웨어에 기반한 보호관리 서비스 인터페이스)

  • In order to increase the promotion of multimedia processing techniques in MPEG standard, MPEG Multimedia Middleware (M3W) which supports middleware interface for multimedia processing is set up. In this paper, multimedia protection and management service interfaces based on MPEG Multimedia Middleware (M3W) are introduced. The service interfaces are based on component models of M3W and support normative IPMP messages. The proposed interfaces are composed of Tool interfaces and Trust management interfaces: Tool interfaces provide the functionality supporting terminal and tool based on the governed decoder model and Trust management interfaces provide the supporting functionality such as license managing and authentication required in DRM devices. As an application of the proposed interfaces, a JAVA based player simulator is shown. The proposed interfaces can be easily implemented under various device and application environments as an ISO/IEC 23004-2 standard middleware platform.

  • MPEG-21 is an on-progress project of the Moving Picture Expert Group (MPEG) that has been started in many independent parts such as part for standardizing the declaration of a digital item (MPEG-21 Part 2: Digital Item Declaration), right expression language (MPEG-21 Part S: Rights Expression Language), way to process the digital item (MPEG-21 Part 10: Digital Item Processing), etc. All this part is intended to form a framework to enable transparent and augmented use of multimedia resources across a wide range of networks and devices (1). In this paper, we show our research initiative to develop a web-based application that utilized many parts of MPEG-21 technology. The implemented concept uses a digital item and license providers in the server side while the MPEG-21 Conformant application is implemented as a plug-in application that will be downloaded to the user terminal when user accesses the webpage for the frist time. The result of this research shows that with some combination of MPEG-21 parts, we can develop an authorized multimedia delivery and consumption application.

Transforming Objects and a Scene Tree of MPEG-4 Contents for Mobile Devices (모바일 장치를 위한 MPEG-4 콘텐츠의 객체 및 장면 트리 변환)

  • We propose a method using a transformation of an object and a scene tree in order to author MPEG-4 contents for mobile devices in this paper. The method transforms media objects in the scene into geometry objects in order to reduce initial loading time of the contents, and reduces an external form of each object in a scene of the content for presenting it efficiently on the small interface of mobile devices. Therefore, the contents for mobile devices are reconstructed by the method. An original object in the scene is presented on a mobile device when a user clicks a related geometry object. The method was applied to a conventional authoring tool, so we could find that the method showed an efficient presentation of MPEG-4 contents on mobile devices.

  • 3D image coding and transmission technologies are essential for transmitting 3D image information through the limited transmission channel, and very important in the area of information and telecommunication services using 3D image media. In this paper, we propose the 3D image coding and transmission methods welch use disparity information and MPEG-2's scalability. Left and Fight image sequences are coded in base layer and enhancement layer, respectively. The enhancement layer contains the disparity and prediction informations. In order to reduce searching time for disparity information, we propose a method in which the disparity information of previous image paid is used in the next image pair, and we adopt the bit rate control method proposed in MPEG-2 TM6. An experimental result showed that the proposed searching method considerably reduced the entire encoding time and reached the desired bit rates.

  • Watermarking is one of the methods that insist on a copyright as it append digital signals in digital informations.(image, video, ets) In this paper, we proposed a digital watermarking algorithm which improved Gradient of DCT Coefficient. This method targets MPEG-2 TM5 system and watermarking process is to be performed during Quantization DCT. Watermark was inserted on Y components of each frames. The PSNR difference between the compressed images with and without watermarking was only 0..23dB. In each case that the resulting image was reusable the normalized correlation between the extracted watermark and the original one was above 0.99.

  • This paper presents the method of calculating the quantization level of the intra-frame in MPEG-4 video encoder. The intra-frame is an essential part in that the quality of the whole GOP is affected by the quality of this frame since the intra-frame, which works as a reference frame within GOP, continuously propagates through other frames. This work proposes how to use bits assigned for gaining the quantization level of the intra-frame, complexity of input images, and GOP structures. The result shows that while existing approaches have the decline in efficiency by using fixed values or show different qualifies depending on the characteristics of the images, the current approach shows the steady results in various images. Comparing with Q2 algorithm obtained in MPEG-4 VM, the approach suggested in this paper gains the benefit of maximum 3.49dB with some variations depending on the characteristics of the images.

A Past Elimination Algorithm of Impossible Candidate Vectors Using Matching Scan Method in Motion Estimation of Full Search (전영역 탐색 방식의 움직임 예측에서 매칭 스캔 방법을 이용한 불가능한 후보 벡터의 고속 제거 알고리즘)

  • Significant computations for full search (FS) motion estimation have been a big obstacle in real-time video coding and recent MPEG-4 AVC (advanced video coding) standard requires much more computations than conventional MPEG-2 for motion estimation. To reduce an amount of computation of full search (FS) algorithm for fast motion estimation, we propose a new and fast matching algorithm without any degradation of predicted images like the conventional FS. The computational reduction without any degradation in predicted image comes from fast elimination of impossible candidate motion vectors. We obtain faster elimination of inappropriate motion vectors using efficient matching units from localization of complex area in image data and dithering order based matching scan. Our algorithm reduces about $30\%$ of computations for block matching error compared with the conventional partial distortion elimination (PDE) algorithm, and our algorithm will be useful in real-time video coding applications using MPEG-4 AVC or MPEG-2.

  • The MPEG-2 source coding algorithm is very sensitive to transmission errors due to using of variable-length coding. When the compressed data are transmitted, transmission errors are generated and error correction scheme is not able to be corrected well them. In the decoder error concealment (EC) techniques must be used to conceal errors and it is able to minimize degradation of video quality. The proposed algorithm is method to conceal successive macroblock errors of I-frame and utilize temporal information of B-frame and spatial information of P-frame In the previous GOP which is temporally the nearest location to I-frame. This method can improve motion distortion and blurring by temporal and spatial errors which cause at existing error concealment techniques. In network where the violent transmission errors occur, we can conceal more efficiently severe slice errors. This algorithm is Peformed in MPEG-2 video codec and Prove that we can conceal efficiently slice errors of I-frame compared with other approaches by simulations.

Key VOP by Shape in MPEG-4 Compressed Domain (MPEG-4 압축 영역에서 형상을 이용한 키 VOP 선정)

  • We propose a novel method of selecting key VOPs from MPEG-4 compressed domain without fully decoding the compressed data. Approximated shapes of VOPs are obtained from the shape coding mode and then VOPs are clustered by shape similarity to generate key VOPs. The proposed method reduces the computation time of shape approximation, compared with Erol's method. Nevertheless, the resulting VOPs have a good summarizing capability of a video sequence. NMHD (normalized mean Hausdorff distance) values are 2-means clustered to generate key VOPs. In the video search, the MHD of a query VOP from key VOPs are computed and the VOP with the lowest distance is returned. Tests on standard MPEG-4 test sequences show that the computational complexity is very low. Recursive clustering proved to be very effective for generating suitable key VOPs.
