  • Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles, denture base resin, were synthesized by suspension polymerization through control of polymerization conditions (stabilizer concentration, co-monomer concentration, and the agitation speed) and evaluated changes in molecular weight and particle size. We also investigated their mechanical properties of compression-molded samples which were from synthesized polymer powder mixed with methyl methacrylate (MMA) solution. under the condition of volumetric ratio as 2:1(PMMA powder and MMA solution). The results shows that the mechanical properties were mainly affected by particle size over 100 ${\mu}$m (in particle size) and by molecular weight under 100 ${\mu}$m (in particle size). From these results, we concluded that the most appropriate particle size of PMMA powder for heat-cured denture base resins is around 100 ${\mu}$m. and its molecular weight is around 300000 (M$\sub$n/).

  • In this study, a scintillation resin for 3D printing was fabricated with 1.0 wt% of PPO organic scintillator, 5.0 wt% of MMA, and commercial acrylic resin. Using the scintillation resin, 3D-shaped plastic scintillator radiation sensors were successfully fabricated quickly and inexpensively with a commercial 3D DLP printer. The 3D printed plastic scintillator has a good dose-output linearity of R-square 0.998 was obtained in the range of 1 to 10 nA of beam current of the 45 MeV proton beam. The developed 3D plastic scintillator has low light output, so there is a limit to its use in low-dose-rate gamma-ray or X-ray dosimetry. However, it was confirmed that the tissue equivalent material could be usefully used for measuring high energy or high dose rates radiation, such as proton beams and ultra-high dose rate beams.

  • This study focuses on evaluating the applicability of an acryl based polymer concrete to the thin bridge deck pavements. The acryl concrete developed in this study is composed of Methyl Methacrylate(MMA) resin, benzol peroxide and fillers. To study the effects of the types and amounts of the components on the physical characteristics of the acryl concrete, viscosity, compressive strength and bending tests were conducted. The optimum mixture design was then determined based on the testing results. Several different types of laboratory tests, such as water and chlorine ion penetration tests, shrinkage and thermal coefficients tests, and tensile bonding strength tests were performed for the optimum acryl concrete and conventional cement concrete. The testing results show that water and chroline ion resistance, bonding strength between acryl and cement concrete and crack resistance of the acryl concrete is better than those of the conventional cement concrete. There are shortcomings that the conventional acryl concrete has a higher shrinkage and thermal coefficients. However, it was confirmed that to use newly developed rubberized MMA resin in this study reduces the crack resistance with substantially increased ductility.

  • In this study, acrylic resins with solids content of 75% were prepared by addition polymerization of n-butyl acrylate (BA), methyl methacrylate (MMA), 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) and acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate (AAEM) monomers. At this time, the glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of the acrylic resin was changed to 20, 30 and $40^{\circ}C$, and the hydroxyl value (OH value) was changed to 60, 90 and 120. As a result, the viscosity of acrylic resin increased with increasing $T_g$ and hydroxyl (OH) value. The synthesized acrylic resin was designed to have a high cross-link density to maintain high elasticity and high durability. The crosslinked acrylic resin was used to prepare an acrylic urethane clear coating by curing reaction with a block isocyanate (Desmodur BL-3175). The physical properties of the clear paints were analyzed by measuring viscosity, adhesion, pencil hardness and $60^{\circ}$ specular gloss. Acrylic urethane clear coatings were prepared as specimens and evaluated for various properties to be applied as top coatings for coil coating. The prepared coatings were excellent in adhesion, excellent in $60^{\circ}$ specular gloss and pencil hardness, and eco-friendly.

  • We first synthesized N-phenylcyclotrisiloxazane ($D_3^{NPh}$) through a cyclization of $\alpha$,$\omega$- dichlorohexamethyltrisiloxane with aniline and prepared poly(dimethylsiloxane-co-N-phenylsiloxazane) copolymer (PDMS-NPSOX) by a ring opening copolymerization of them with hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane $D_3$. An acrylate monomer modified with PDMS-NPSOX was synthesized by using chloroethyl methacrylate and copolymerized with methylmethacrylate (MMA) and n-butylacrylate. The composition of the copolymer was chosen to control their glass transition temperature ($T_g$) to 25 $^{\circ}C$. By changing the comonomer from PDMS to PDMS-NPSOX, $T_g$ and adhesive strength of the copolymer were increased from 20 to 25 $^{\circ}C$ and from 1.76 to 2.23 N/cm, respectively.

  • Carbon-based nanofillers, including nanodiamond (ND) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), have been employed in epoxy matrixes for improving the toughness, using the tow prepreg method, of epoxy compounds for high pressure tanks. The reinforcing performance was compared with those of commercially available toughening fillers, including carboxyl-terminated butadiene acrylonitrile (CTBN) and block copolymers, such as poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-poly(butyl acrylate)-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (BA-b-MMA). CTNB improved the mechanical performance at a relatively high filler loading of ~5 phr. Nanosized BA-b-MMA showed improved performance at a lower filler loading of ~2 phr. However, the mechanical properties deteriorated at a higher loading of ~5 phr because of the formation of larger aggregates. ND showed no significant improvement in mechanical properties because of aggregate formation. In contrast, surface-treated ND with epoxidized hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene considerably improved the mechanical properties, notably the impact strength, because of more uniform dispersion of particles in the epoxy matrix. CNTs noticeably improved the flexural strength and impact strength at a filler loading of 0.5 phr. However, the improvements were lost with further addition of fillers because of CNT aggregation.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate the exposure level of hazardous chemical agents for dental technicians in Ulsan. Methods: We measured airborne total dusts and metals such as Nickel, Manganese, Cobalt, and Chromium in 10 dental laboratories by the NIOSH Methods 0500 and 7300, respectively. Methyl methacrylate (MMA), a key ingredient in acrylic resin, was also monitored using passive samplers for long-term sampling and Tenax tubes for short-term sampling. Results: Measured levels of all items were below 10% of the Korean exposure limit except for Nickel. The geometric mean concentration and geometric standard deviation of total dust, Nickel, and MMA were $0.14mg/m^3$ (2.16), $165.3{\mu}g/m^3$ (3.31), and 0.2 ppm (2.5) respectively. Airborne Nickel concentration of two dental laboratories exceeded the exposure limit ($1000{\mu}g/m^3$). The major emission sources of Nickel were metal trimming and casting processes. Conclusions: We found that Nickel, a carcinogen, should be controled most urgently to protect dental technicians.

  • To prepare acrylic resin coatings containing 70% of solids, we used n-butyl methacrylate(BMA), methyl methacrylate(MMA), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate(2-HEMA), and acetoacetoxyethyl acrylate(AAEA), caprolactone acrylate(CLA) as raw materials, the glass transition temperature(Tg) of acrylic copolymer was adjusted around 50 ℃. The viscosity and molecular weight of the acrylic resins was increased with increasing OH values. Di-tert-amyl peroxide was found to be the suitable initiator to get high-solids acrylic resins. The optimum reaction conditions found in the study are 5 wt% of initiator, 4 wt% of chain transfer agent, 4 hrs of dropping time, and 140 ℃ of reaction temperature. The structure of the synthesized resins were characterized by FT-IR and 1H-NMR spectroscopy. Number average molecular weight of 1900~2600 and molecular wight distribution of 1.4~2.1 were obtained. Crosslinked acrylic urethane clear coatings were obtained by curing reaction between the synthesized acrylic resins and hexamethylene diisocyanate trimer(Desmodur N-3300), the equivalent ratio of NCO/OH was 1.2/1.0. The physical properties from the following studies were carried out: viscosity(Zahn cup #2), adhesion, drying time, pot-life, pensil hardness, and 60° specular gloss. Various properties of the acrylic urethane clear coatings were also evaluated on the coating specimens. Adhesion property to a substrate, drying time, pot-life, pencil hardness, and 60° specular gloss of prepared paint showed quite good properties. Futhermore, prepared paint containing 10% of CLA showed quite good properties for adhesion, low viscosity and high hardness.
