  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the surface treatment of MMA and TEGDMA concentration, silane coupling agent on the shear bond strength of denture base resin and denture reliners. Denture base resin surface was treated with MMA and TEGDMA concentration, silane coupling agent. After denture reliners were injected bond strength was measured. The results of MMA and TEGDMA concentration on the shear bond strength of Vertex self curing resin showed that the value of MMA 95% and TEGDMA 5%, MMA 90% and TEGDMA 10%, MMA 80% and TEGDMA 20% groups were higher than that of other group(P<0.05). MMA and TEGDMA concentration on the shear bond strength of Kooliner resin showed that the value of MMA 95% and TEGDMA 5%, MMA 90% and TEGDMA 10% were higher than that of other group(P<0.05). Silane coupling agent on the shear bond strength of Vertex self curing resin and Kooliner showed that the value of MMA 95% and silane coupling agent 5% groups was higher than that of other group(P<0.05). Therefore, we could conclude that appropriate chemical surface treatments are supposed to affect the bond of denture base resin and denture reliners.

  • In this study, methyl methacrylate (MMA)- modified polyester polymer concrete, in which the MMA was added to the unsaturated polyester resin, was developed for improving the early-age strength and the workability of the conventional polymer concrete, binder of which was the unsaturated polyester resin. Then the fundamental properties of the polymer concrete such as workability and strength were surveyed. The experimental results showed that the workability was remarkably improved as the MMA contents increased, and the filler-binder ratio was turned out to be important factor for the workability. Slump prediction equation was derived by the regression analysis based on MMA content and filler-binder ratio. Furthermore, early-age strength was greater when the MMA content were increased in the range of 20-40 % but the strength rather showed a tendency of decrease when the MMA content was 50 %.

  • We examined effects of crosslinking agents, i.e., ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (EGD) and butanediol dimethacrylate (BDD) containing ester groups on chloromethylation of crosslinked polystyrene resin matrices. It was proved that the ester group in methylmethacrylate (MMA) accelerates the chloromethylation of the divinylbenzene (DVB)-crosslinked styrene-MMA copolymer. As the MMA content increased in the styrene-MMA copolymers, the chloromethylation was enhanced. Complete chloromethylation was obtained at about 25% MMA content.

  • Waterproof layers are installed in civil engineering structures and bridge construction is commonly finished by applying a layer of regular or asphalt concrete above the waterproof layer. However, asphalt materials are susceptible to melting at high temperature due to its superior temperature sensitivity, and this causes the waterproofing material to melt due to the high temperature of the asphalt concrete, thereby increasing the defect occurrence rate due to the thickness reduction. In this study, tensile strength and elongation of hard and soft type of MMA(Methyl Methacrylate) applied to bridges were compared in accordance to standard performance criteria based on different mixture ratios. Results of comparative testing showed that hard MMA resin can display a satisfactory tensile strength, and soft MMA resin displays satisfactory elongation properties, but as the two resin types are separately used, neither types are able to satisfy the standard requirements outlined in KS F 4932. When the amount of the powder exceeds 56.25% of the total amount, voids are generated on the surface after curing and self leveling was impossible and a heterogeneous surface is formed. Furthermore, when the hard resin: soft resin: powder mixture ratio was set to 15g: 85g: 150g. the tensile strength was $1.5N/mm^2$ and the elongation percentage was 133% which satisfy the tensile performance of KS F 4932.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of ferric and ferric ions contained in phosphoric acid solution as a pretreatment solution on bonding of MMA/TBBO resin to dentin. Each of 1 % and 3 % ferric chloride. cupric chloride. cupric sulfate. and cupric nitrate was mixed into 10% phosphoric acid solution and pretreated dentin surface of bovine anterior teeth for 30 seconds followed- by water rinse and dry. Tensile bond strength was determined after bonding of pretreated dentin with MMA/TBBO resin by use of brush-on ;technique and storing for 24 hours in 3it distilled water. The amount of cupric ions adsorbed on pretreated dentin surface was detected by Wave-Dispersion X-ray microanalyzer for different groups of each pretreatment solution containing cupric salts. The pretreatment with cupric ions contained in 10% phosphoric acid solution was effective to increase bonding strength of MMA/TBBO resin to dentin but not in case of ferric ions. The pretreatment with 3 % cupric chloride and cupric nitrate both enhanced significant increase in bonding strength compared to the control group of 10% phosphoric acid solution(p<0.05). Cupric ions measured in pretreated dentin surface was higher in 3 % cupric chloride group than in 1% cupric chloride group, but couldn't find distinct relationship from the results of this experiment between the amount of adsorbed cupric ions according to the kind of cupric salts and the bonding strength value.

  • We evaluated in vitro microleakage of Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) powder with 4-methacryloxyethyl trimellitate anhydride (4-META) / methyl methacrylate (MMA) & tri-n-butylborane (TBB) resin as a retrograde filling material by using methylene blue dye method. Fifty-two single rooted, extracted teeth were instrumented and obturated with gutta percha and AH plus sealer. The apical 3mm of each root was resected and 3mm deep ultrasonic root end preparation was done. External surface of roots was coated with nail varnish. Prepared teeth were randomly divided into five groups; Negative control: completely covered with nail varnish; Positive control: coated with nail varnish except for apical foramen; Group 1 (retrofilled with Portland cement); Group 2 (retrofilled with MTA); Group 3 (retrofilled with MTA powder mixed with 4-META/MMA & TBB resin). Immediately after completion of root-end filling, all specimens were submerged in methylene blue dye for 72 hours in $37^{\circ}C$incubator. The roots were longitudinally sectioned and measured for extent of dye penetration by three different examiners under microscope (${\times}$10). The results were statistically analyzed using one way ANOVA and Turkey's HSD test. No leakage was evident in negative control and complete leakage in positive control group. Group 3 showed significantly less leakage than group 1 and 2 (p < 0.01). There was no significant difference between group 1 and 2 (p > 0.01). It was concluded that MTA powder with 4-META/MMA & TBB resin was excellent in reducing initial apical microleakage.

  • MMA-modified fiberglass-reinforced plastic composite pipe was produced by using the binder of MMA-modified unsaturated polyester resin in which low viscosity MMA was added to unsaturated polyester resin. Sixteen specimens were made of polymer mortar and fiberglass-reinforced plastic by the centrifugal method. For these specimens the external strength tests were carried out by taking the core thickness consisting of polymer mortar and the fiberglass content per unit area as experimental variables to figure out the effect of variations of these variables influencing on flexural rigidity that is an important property for the composite pipe. Results of this study are believed to provide the basic data for more economical and practical design of MMA-modified fiberglass-reinforced plastic composite pipe.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the flexural strength of a 3D-printed denture base resin (Cosmos Denture), after different immediate repair techniques with surface treatments and thermocycling. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Rectangular 3D-printed denture base resin (Cosmos Denture) specimens (N = 130) were thermocycled (5,000 cycles, 5℃ and 55℃) before and after the different repair techniques (n = 10 per group) using an autopolymerized acrylic resin (Jet, J) or a hard relining resin (Soft Confort, SC), and different surface treatments: Jet resin monomer for 180 s (MMA), blasting with aluminum oxide (JAT) or erbium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser (L). The control group were intact specimens. A three-point flexural strength test was performed, and data (MPa) were analyzed by ANOVA and Games-Howell post hoc test (α = 0.05). Each failure was observed and classified through stereomicroscope images and the surface treatments were viewed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). RESULTS. Control group showed the highest mean of flexural strength, statistically different from the other groups (P < .001), followed by MMA+J group. The groups with L treatment were statistically similar to the MMA groups (P > .05). The JAT+J group was better than the SC and JAT+SC groups (P < .05), but similar to the other groups (P > .05). Adhesive failures were most observed in JAT groups, especially when repaired with SC. The SEM images showed surface changes for all treatments, except JAT alone. CONCLUSION. Denture bases fabricated with 3D-printed resin should be preferably repaired with MMA+J. SC and JAT+SC showed the worst results. Blasting impaired the adhesion of the SC resin.

  • PURPOSES : This study deals with the working life of polymer concrete, which is typically used as a repair or overlay material for portland cement concrete pavements. METHODS : In the scope of this study, laboratory testing was conducted on fresh MMA modified UP polymer concrete, which uses an MMA monomer for viscosity adjustment and strength improvement of UP resin. The experimental variables were temperature (-20 to $+20^{\circ}C$) and binder components (MMA, MEKPO, and DMA). RESULTS : The result showed that the optimum binder ratios for polymer concrete production were 12, 11, and 10 wt.% when the MMA contents were 20, 30, and 40 wt.%, respectively. The working life of polymer concrete depending on temperature and binder components could be expressed by a logarithmic functional formula. The coefficient of variation for each binder component was the highest for DMA content while the lowest for MEKPO content. Also, the contents of each binder component for ensuring the working life of 60 minutes were proposed. CONCLUSIONS : Ultimately, the present study derived a linear regression equation estimating 60 minutes working life based on the setting times of each binder component.
