빛과 공간 환경을 다룬 로버트 어윈의 초기 작업에 관한 연구 (The Early Light and Space Environments of Robert Irwin)

  • In his non-hierarchical approach to art making, Robert Irwin questions how art is made. In the process, he seems to come down on both sides of the Modernism versus Postmodernism debate. Insofar as he wants to advance the avant garde tenets of modern art, he can be thought of as a modernist. But insofar as he denies Modernism's claims for transcendental status, he can be thought of as a postmodernist. Irwin's light and space environments, in particular, are conditioned by their basic attachments to their surroundings. They reveal the commonplace, but largely overlooked, richness of visual perception. By encouraging his viewers to open their eyes, Irwin wants them to engage in an act of looking, one that manipulates the basic syntax of seeing. This paper discusses Irwin's contributions to the art of his time (basically the transitional period between Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism) using as an example a light and space environment he created as the backdrop for the "First National Symposium on Habitability." This work was later reprised in 1980 as an independent installation. These works are examined to show how Irwin's art displaces modernist notions of authoritative (and authoritarian) quality with postmodernist ideas of direct (and demotic) value.

프랭크 게리의 건축에서 보여지는 후기미니멀리즘적 특성의 적용과 표현에 관한 연구 (Frank O. Gehry's Architectural Interpretation of the Post-Minimal Features)

  • Frank O. Gehry is known to be an architect whose work ranges over different realms, especially between fine arts and architecture. He himself mentioned about this interdisciplinary aspect of his own work: he was inspired by, worked together with, and sometimes directly influenced by contemporary artists. Among the artists, the most influential ones are the sculptors, especially Richard Serra of Post-Minimalism and Claes Oldenburg of Pop Art. Based on this historically known fact, although very brief, this study explores how the features of Post-Minimal sculpture were transferred into Gerhy's architecture, and how Gehry has developed them into his own language. In Post-Minimal sculpture, the main concept 'Anti-Form' was realized by emphasis on materiality, process and intuitiveness of work of in. Those features appeared vividly in Gehry's works especially in his second stage of his life, but seemed to have disappeared in the third stage. However, in the fourth stage, Gehry went beyond the influence of Post-Minimalism, and he created very unique formal language dialectically formed between Post-Minimal sculptural language and his architectural language.

  • The result of this study can be summarized as follows. First, the result of the examination about the theoretical background of the monochrome was influenced by the minimalism and modernism, and consequently the abstract expressionism which is the main trend of the modern painting was formed basing upon the plane feature and unicolor character, and it was recognized that the custom of the plane feature was implied into the monochrome. Second, the aesthetic characteristics such as the beauty of body, beauty of simplicity, beauty of nature, beauty tradition, and beauty whole of the Korean monochrome paintings in 1970s were expressed in the modern fashion as follows. The beauty of body can be told as the dress which exposes the body or See-through look in the modern fashion. The beauty of simplicity is expressed as the most simple and non-decorating minimalism element. The beauty of nature is expressed by using the natural and convenient color without any artificiality. The beauty of tradition is expressed in the Han-bok natural white material. The beauty of whole is easily expressed by using repeated print, partition or overall harmonized beauty.

  • A rational and logical sense of design often found in modernism(including minimalism) sometime deal with the criticism that such characteristics which derived from those of modernism, lack emotion31 qualities(arises from human feelings). It consequently took them to adopt traditional designs in the past, creating such conditions that constantly escapes from‘present’ one and back to the‘new’. This mode develops a trend in current interior design which decorative elements such as art work: traditional arts, folk crafts, flowers and green are much evident. Thus, using many decorative elements of the past(what was once banned since modernism), brings up the interesting point of view that needs to be discussed a new decorative trend if today's interior design. It will approach by comparing significances of past decorative expressions with present through which investigation, will show a better understanding of recent characteristics in interior designing, a.k.a, a current trend since minimalism, embracing important qualities of culture, ecology and people - against today's less-inspired, standardizing spaces.

데이터분석을 통한 확대투사원리의 효율성 제고 (A Reconsideration on the Efficiency of the Extended Projection Principle)

  • 본 연구는 다양한 언어 데이터 분석을 통해 최소주의에서의 확대투사원리에 대한 대안을 제시하는데 역점을 둔다. 확대투사원리는 두 가지 원리에서 도출되는데, 하나는 표준이론에서의 투사원리이고 다른 하나는 주어위치는 반드시 채워야 한다는 요건을 근거한다. 이 두 원리가 하나로 병합된 확대투사원리는 이후에 계속해서 그 개념이 변한다. 최소주의 출현 이전에는 격에 의존적이었으나, Chomsky(1995)의 최소주의 하에서는 범주자질 [D]의 특성으로 귀착된다. 그러나 본 연구에서는 위치 도치 구문, 허사 there 구문, 결속이론과 같은 구문에서의 다양한 언어 데이터를 분석하여 굴절어구의 지정어 위치는 최대로 투사된 어휘항목에 의해 반드시 채워져야 한다는 대안을 제시한다.

A study of Fashion art Illustration employing Matisse Painting

  • Modern art is getting more comprehensive and diversified regardless of genre in many forms due to the pluralism and anti-aesthetic trend of the time which is impacted by post modernism. This atmosphere is also applied to fashion illustration which creates synergy effect in cooperation with many different genres. This study selected Matisse' paper cut-out as the subject which would reflect the minimalism and ionism of modern plasticity. By taking this as the motive for fashion illustration, I made seven illustration works with the subject of minimalism of form and color. The conclusion of this study is as following. First, Matisse's paper cut out has controlled plasticity related to the modern ionism and it well fits the modern trend and sensibility which is appropriate for motive of fashion illustration. Second, by upgrading the technique of Matisse' paper cut-out in a modern way such as combination of hand drawing and computer graphic using Photoshop, I was able to make originative and creative illustration works with background and patterns that were closely connected with each other. Third, applying the fashion illustration to other various products is being well received now and I made my illustrations that could lead to follow up studies to apply the fashion illustration to other different products. Matisse' paper cut-our has forms, colors and patterns that can contain both commercial and artistic value. Therefore it is quite feasible for follow up research to apply into many different areas.

라깡의 응시에 의한 래리 벨의 작품 속 건축적 경향 분석연구 (A Analytical Study on the Architectural Trends of Larry Bell's Work by Lacan's Gaze)

  • This study set out to analyze the architectural trends in Bell's works and spaces by applying the Gaze theory of Jacques Lacan to his minimalism works, concept changes in their changing process, and the development of exhibition spaces related to him. The findings were as follows: first, his early glass cube works sought after the reproduction of the Real Order through the repeating eyes of viewers and objects by using exhibition lighting; second, his works in the Standing Wall category pursued the reproduction of the Real Order through the repeating eyes of many different viewers around objects; third, his Nesting Boxes tried to reproduce the Real Order of a higher competition level in the perception aspects, making the repetitive elements of Standing Walls converge and including even external environmental elements; fourth, there is no decisive gaze sought after by Judd or the Key Signifiant as the core of Lacan's philosophy in Bell's formative works; and finally, Bell's works pursue the completion of Simulacrum through the infinite repetition of Derrida's Deconstruction Philosophy through the infinite visual repetition sought after by Gehry and Moss in the LA School of Architects who shared the same area and period with him.

현대조경설계에서 미니멀리즘의 조형개념 특성 (Characteristics of Plastic Concept of Minimalism in Comtemporary Landscape Design)

  • 조경에서는 문화와 철학의 차이에서 오는 다원적인 표현을 추구하고, 조경가는 그 시대의 문화를 반영한 독특한 환경을 제공함으로써 동시대의 세대에게 사회적 목적과 공간적 관계에 대한 감각을 전해준다. 특히 조경가는 설계작품을 통해 그 시대의 예술을 반영하게 되며, 당대의 예술 특성을 현실공간에 투영하게 된다. 역사적으로 조경가들은 모든 형태의 예술행위에서 많은 모티브(motive)를 찾아 왔으며, 특히 회화는 형태 구성에 직접적인 영향을 주어 조형개념의 근간을 이루기도 하였다. 조경에서의 미니멀리즘(Minimalism)은 모더니즘 시대를 통해 상실되었던 미적 대상으로서의 경관과 경관에서의 예술성 향상 그리고 동시대예술의 구현이라는 조경에서의 예술참여적 성격 표방에 상당한 기여를 하였다. 따라서 본 연구는 미술의 미니멀리즘 조형개념이 조경설계의 조형개념에 미친 영향을 설계 작품의 해석적 연구를 통해 미니멀리즘의 수용과 재현 양상을 밝혔으며, 조형개념 특성을 다음과 같이 요약할 수 있다. 첫째, 미니멀리즘 조경의 환원성(reduction)은 원 삼각형 사각형과 같은 단순기하학의 함축된 형태언어를 사용하여 이용자가 즉각적으로 작품의 정체성을 파악하고, 작품의도를 용이하게 파악하도록 하였다. 둘째, 확장성은 선적 요소의 채택으로 개별 요소 상호간을 연결하는 내적 질서와 시각적 방향성을 위한 외연적 활로를 찾고 있다. 셋째, 평면성은 주변 환경과의 차별화를 통하여 무의미한 공간을 정의하고, 경관 연속체로서 지각을 유발하고자 평탄하게 조성된 부지에 부가 요소를 중첩시키거나 시각 이미지를 위해 포장을 패턴화하는 경향을 가진다. 넷째, 연속성은 공간의 중심성을 확보하고 개별공간의 독자성보다 부지의 전체성을 추구하여 조형요소의 반복적 구성과 소재의 반복을 통한 구성 등의 특성을 가진다.

국내 웹 디자인 변천사 - 디자인 표현기법과 기술적 변화를 중심으로 - (History of Domestic Web Design - Focused on Design Expression Techniques and Technological Changes -)

  • 웹의 활용과 기술의 발전으로 웹 디자인 영역은 점차 확대되어 가고 있지만, 관련 연구는 미비한 실정이다. 이에 웹 디자인의 변천 과정을 연구함으로써 웹 디자인 시장의 중요성을 인식하고, 향후 디자인 방향을 제시하고자 한다. 본 연구에서는 디자인의 표현기법 발현과 진화 배경과 디자인에 영향을 주는 정보기술의 흐름을 고찰하고, 이를 바탕으로 웹 디자인 변천 과정 분석 연구를 수행하였다. 이는 앞으로의 웹 디자인 영역 확장을 위한 기초 연구 자료로서 의의가 있다고 판단된다. 연구 범위로는 웹의 역사 30년을 기준으로 1990년부터 2000년대 초까지는 당시 이슈가 되었t던 웹 사이트 자료를 대상으로 하였고, 2000년대 중반부터는 웹 어워드 코리아의 대상 수상작을 분석 대상으로 선정하여 디자인 표현기법의 조형적 특성과 웹 디자인에 영향을 준 정보기술 특성을 분석하는 방법으로 연구를 수행하였다. 연구 결과 디자인 표현기법의 변화는 미니멀리즘과 스큐어모피즘으로 크게 나눌 수 있었고, 정보기술이 발전함에 따라 영향을 받으며 웹 디자인을 표현하는 방식이 다양하게 변화하는 것을 알 수 있었다. 앞으로도 다양한 디바이스의 출현과 영상 콘텐츠 활성화로 이와 조화를 이룰 수 있는 미니멀리즘의 영향을 받은 디자인이 지속할 것으로 예측된다.

90년대 이후 패션일러스트레이션의 표현적 특성에 관한 연구 - 패션의 트랜드와 패션의 포스트모던적 특성과의 연계(連繫)를 중심으로 - (A Study on the Characteristics of Fashion Expression after the 1990s - Focusing on the link between Fashion Trend and Characteristics of Postmodernistic Fashion -)

  • In this study, the fashion trend after the 1990s and the characteristics of fashion in the postmodernistic viewpoint that mainly effected fashion were observed, and the characteristics of fashion illustration expression was observed in the viewpoint of its link. It can be seen that mutually close characteristics are mutually linked. As the result of this study, the characteristics of fashion illustration can be categorized into three areas. and the sub-concepts are as following. The first category is the pursuit of feminine beauty of individual multi-dimension. This includes- 1) retro feminine beauty; 2) fetishistic and ecstatic feminine beauty; 3) mixed composition genderless (mixed composition style. ageless style and raceless style): and 4) beauty of body deconstruction and reconstruction (deformation due to partial transformation, change into animalization, mechanization and spirituelization. and beautification of crudeness). The second is the intentional deviation of expression and production technique. This includes-1) deviation from traditional perspective; 2) deviation from composition concept: and 3) breaking away from the existing material and expression technique of material. The third is the pursuit of authority-rejection form of expression. This is an area that should be noticed in the fashion illustration expression of the 1990s, as it shows the most diverse phenomenon. The sub-concepts of this category include- 1) separation of art 2) minimalism (minimalism in structure and production method); 3) flatness; 4) completion of incompletion; 5) accidentalism; 6) sportive;7) absence of figure; 8) intentional childishness 9) story development; 10) techno mechanism and cyber character; and 11) animation style.
