  • Wave conditions are crucial for offshore wind farm design, particularly in determining structural loads and layout. However, there is limited wave hindcasting research for the Wangdeungdo Island area, a potential offshore wind site. This study used the MIKE21 model for a year-long wave hindcast around Wangdeungdo in 2021. Validation showed high reproducibility for significant wave heights with RMSE values of 0.177 and 0.225 and Pearson correlations of 0.971 and 0.970 at Sangwangdeungdo and Buan buoys. Subsequent analysis of the wave characteristics near Wangdeungdo indicated significant seasonal variations and differences in maximum significant wave heights across locations, which are expected to significantly impact the design loads for offshore wind structures.

  • A total of 335 sows at a commercial operation (Hitch Pork Producers Inc, Guymon, OK) was used to determine dietary effects of yeast culture supplementation ($XPC^{TM}$, Diamond V Mills) on litter performance. Sows were grouped by parity (parity 1 to 12). Pigs within a group were then allotted to treatments. Treatments consisted of: CON (no added yeast culture) and YC (12 and 15 g/d XPC during gestation and lactation, respectively). Sows were housed individually and fed their assigned gestation and lactation diets from d 35 of gestation to d 21 of lactation. Sows were fed 2.0 kg/d during gestation and ad libitum during lactation. Voluntary feed intake was measured daily during lactation. At farrowing, numbers of pigs born total and alive were measured. Weights of litters were measured at birth and weaning on d 21 of lactation. Litter weight gain of the YC treatment was 6.9% greater (p<0.01) than that of the CON. However, voluntary feed intake of sows and litter size did not differ between treatments. This study indicates that dietary yeast culture supplementation benefits sow productivity by improving litter weight gain. At present, it is not confirmed if improved litter weight gain was due to milk production, which remains to be investigated.

  • Many studies on the professional development of science teachers demonstrated that induction teachers' conceptions of teaching science are important factors in developing their professionalism. The present study was conducted to describe in detail the progress of two science induction teachers, June and Mike, towards conceptual change teaching, and to investigate secondary induction science teachers' conceptions of teaching science by analysing their conceptual ecologies. The study was interpretive, using multiple data sources to achieve a triangulation of data. Both June and Mike held strongly positive learning in their views of knowledge and science. Holding positivist views of knowledge and of science is likely to be a major obstacle for anyone coming to understand constructivism and its implications in teaching for conceptual change. This argument resonates in several key ways with the teachers' cases, even though I recognize differences between scenario and teachers, and between teachers themselves.

  • Numerical experiments with weakly nonlinear MIKE21 BW module and fully nonlinear FUNWAVE model are performed to identify the nonlinear characteristics of Boussinesq models with varying nonlinearity. Generation of waves with varying amplitudes, nonlinear shoaling and wave propagation over submerged bar experiments showed the importance of nonlinear model in shallow water where nonlinearity becomes prominent. Fully nonlinear model showed the nonsymmetrical wave form more clearly and gave larger shoaling coefficients than those of weakly nonlinear model.

  • A model has been constructed in this study for the investigation of physical characteristics of the Gyeonggi Bay and Han River estuary. MIKE 21 HD (HyDrodynamics) has been used for the uncertainty analysis of the tide of the Gyeonngi Bay and Han River estuary. A total of 15 model experiments have been performed for the hydrodynamic parts and the analysis of results have been made in terms of RMSD (Root-mean square deviation) which has been frequently employed in the suitability analysis of hydrological data since the introduction by NERC(1975), U.K. A smaller value of RMSD indicates the more suitability of a parameter to the model. Analysis of the hydrodynamic results has shown that RMSD of the mean tidal range has the largest value of 0.1148 at Yeomha channel while has the smallest value of 0.0400 at Yeonphyong-do, indicating that the uncertainty in the mean tidal range on near-shore side is larger than that of offshore side. Experiment with reduced water depth by 10% has produced a most significant increase in RMSD. It is therefore implied that the model response changes more sensitively to water depth rather than grid sizes, open boundary forcing and river discharge.

  • Applicability of the MIKE21 model as a real time coupled tide-surge model had been examined at the previous study. In this study, another applicability of the model as an inundation model is also examined. Prior to real cases, effect of artificial structures on the inundation is analyzed. The results show that inundation depth is not altered, while inundation area is lessened as a result of decreased inundation speed. Comparative study between the coupled model and an uncoupled storm surge model is also carried out at the Masan coastal zone, which shows the coupled model is considered to be plausible at the time to maximum inundation, while both models show similar results at the inundation area and inundation depth.

  • There is an explosion of talk about crucial, new literacies for the 21st Century, for example critical thinking, problem-solving, media literacy, technology literacy, digital literacy, visual literacy. The other day, there was even an article about "gaming literacy!" How does one make sense of it all? The common factor in all these literacies is "information" - information seeking, information use, information processing, information presentation, and information evaluation. And, these "information" elements come together in information literacy: the ability to engage in effective and efficient information problem-solving. Information literacy is the overarching and unifying literacy, and all libraries have a unique and essential role to play in delivering meaningful information literacy programs to people of all ages. In this keynote paper and address, Professor and Dean Emeritus Mike Eisenberg will define the concept and structure of library-based information literacy programs and offer strategies for developing and implementing information literacy programs that are comprehensive(reaching all users), predictable (consistent over time), and accountable(measured and reported).

  • Heated tool joining is a popular method for joining parts made from plastics and composite materials. The method is commonly known as butt fusion in the plastic pipe industry and this paper provides a short introduction to the basics of producing a good butt fusion joint. The function of each of the essential parts of the butt fusion equipment is described followed by a presentation of the important parameters of the bonding process in reference to a well-established interfacial pressure versus time curve. The butt fusion procedure is then outlined with good practices that detail the preparation of equipment and pipes to be joined as well as the fusion joining process.
